Coupling textural and stable-isotope variations in fluvial stromatolites:Comparison of Pleistocene and recent records in NE Spain

Textural and stable isotopic features of two middle Pleistocene fluvial stromatolite profiles are compared to a recent stromatolite,both formed in the River Piedra system(NE Spain),to test the reliability of climatic,hydrologic and depositional information derived from ancient *** Pleistocene stromatolites formed in a multi-domed,highly-inclined *** recent stromatolite also formed in a highly-inclined cascade of the River Piedra,the sedimentary conditions of which were periodically examined between the years 2000 and *** Pleistocene stromatolites are formed of an alternation of 1) thin large-crystal laminae(type A),with elongated crystals up to 1 mm long,and 2) thick small-crystal laminae(type B),consisting of cyanobacterial fan-and bushshaped *** textural and isotopic comparison with the recent stromatolite shows that each A–B couplet corresponds to one *** type-A laminae are comparable to the macrocrystalline laminae that occur in the cool-period deposits of the recent stromatolite,and the type-B laminae are comparable to the warm-period deposits of the recent *** temperatures(Tw),calculated from δ^(18)o_(calcite) and present measures of δ^(18)o_(water),were similar in the Pleistocene and recent specimens,and close to the measured river ***,the Pleistocene stromatolites formed not far from isotopic equilibrium,as did the recent *** Pleistocene δ^(18) o_(calcite) biannual oscillation is wider in amplitude than in the recent stromatolite,which suggests larger differences in Tw through the year in the Pleistocene than at *** Pleistocene δ^(13)C_(calcite) does not show any pattern;and the values are slightly higher than the recent *** co-evolution of δ^(18)o and δ^(13)C is parallel in the Pleistocene stromatolites,matching the recent stromatolite *** results and their comparison with other ancient examples prove that textural and isotopic features in ancient stromatolites

Hepatocellular carcinoma and food contamination: ochratoxin A as a great prompter

ochratoxin A (oTA) is a secondary metabolite of Asper-gillus and Penicillium, microorganisms that can be haz-ardous to health when present as food contaminants. oTA is a potent member of a group of mycotoxins. Prolonged exposure to mycotoxins in the diet is related to cancer, among other diseases. Hepatocellular car-cinoma (HCC) accounts for 70%-90% of primary liver cancers and is the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. In a recent study, Ibrahim et al proposed a correlation between the incidence of HCC and contamination with oTA. Analysis of oTA in serum samples showed that HCC patients had the highest incidence of oTA of the subjects examined (5-fold higher than that of the control group). oTA levels were significantly increased in HCC patients. This study demonstrates that chronic exposure to high levels of oTA may be associated with a high risk of liver cancer development. Future epidemiologic studies of HCC should focus on good practices in food preparation, food storage and the consumption of oTA-containing foods.

From conventional two-stage hepatectomy to ALPPS:Fifteen years of experience in a hepatobiliary surgery unit

Background:Hepatectomy in patients with large tumor load may result in postoperative liver failure and associated complications due to excessive liver parenchyma *** two-stage hepatectomy(TSH)and associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy(ALPPS)technique are possible solutions to this *** liver metastases(CRLM)is the most frequent indication,and there is a need to assess outcomes for both techniques to improve surgical and long-term oncological outcomes in these ***:A single-center retrospective study was designed to compare TSH with ALPPS in patients with initially unresectable bilateral liver tumors between January 2005 and January *** was performed from January 2012 onwards as the technique of ***-term overall survival(os)and disease-free survival(DFS)were evaluated as primary outcome in CRLM *** morbidity,mortality and liver growth in all patients were also ***:A total of 38 staged hepatectomies were performed:17 TSH and 21 *** resection rate was 76.5%(n=13)in the TSH group and 85.7%(n=18)in the ALPPS group(P=0.426).overall major morbidity(Clavien-Dindo≥3 a)(stage 1+stage 2)was 41.2%(n=7)in TSH and 33.3%(n=7)in ALPPS patients(P=0.389),and perioperative 90-day mortalities were 11.8%(n=2)vs.19.0%(n=4)in each group,respectively(P=0.654).Intention-to-treat os rates at 1 and 5 years in CRLM patients for TSH(n=15)were 80%and 33%,and for ALPPS(n=17)76%and 35%,*** rates at 1 and 5 years were 36%and 27%in the TSH group vs.33%and 27%in the ALPPS group,***:ALPPS is an effective alternative to TSH in bilateral affecting liver tumors,allowing higher resection rate,but patients must be carefully *** CRLM patients similar long-term os and DFS can be achieved with both techniques.

The impact of forest microhabitats on physiochemical properties of the soil and that of microbial communities on tropical soils remain poorly *** elucidate the effect of tropical forest stand on leaf litter and soil microbial communities,we studied enzyme activities,microbial biomass,and diversity in three distinct microhabitats in terms of plant richness,diameter at breast height(DBH),and physiochemical properties of soil and litter,each associated with a different Vanilla *** the soil,positive correlations were found between electrical conductivity(EC)and total organic carbon(ToC)with phosphatase activity,and between nitrogen(N)and water-soluble carbon(WSC)content with urease activity(UA).In the litter,the water content was positively correlated with bacterial and fungal biomass,and N and WSC contents were positively correlated with fungal *** correlations were found between plant richness and UA in the soil,plant richness and fungal biomass in the soil and litter,and DBH and fungal biomass in the *** sequencing revealed differences between microhabitats in the relative abundance of some fungal and bacterial taxa and in the bacterial community composition of both litter and *** richness and diversity were different between microhabitats,and,in litter samples,they were negatively correlated with DBH and plant richness,*** contrast,none of the soil and litter physiochemical properties were significantly correlated with microbial *** results show that significant shifts in enzyme activity,microbial biomass,and diversity in the microhabitats were driven by key abiotic and biotic factors depending on the soil or litter sample type.
