Life expectancy in patients with rheumatoid arthritis(RA)is reduced compared to the general population owing to an increase in cardiovascular diseases(CVD)not fully explained by traditional cardiovascular risk *** recent years,interest has been focused on the alterations in lipid metabolism in relation to chronic inflammation as one of the possible mechanisms involvedin the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis of RA *** regarding this issue has revealed quantitative alterations in lipoproteins during the acute-phase reaction,and has also demonstrated structural alterations in these lipoproteins which affect their functional *** many alterations in lipid metabolism have been described in this regard,these structural changes associated with inflammation are particularly important in high-density lipoproteins as they affect their cardioprotective *** this respect,excessive oxidation in low-density lipoprotein(LDL)and increased lipoprotein(a)with a predominance of smaller apolipoprotein(a)isoforms has also been *** article will discuss proinflammatory high-density lipoproteins(pi HDL),oxidized LDL and lipoprotein(a).Elevated concentrations of these lipoproteins with marked pro-atherogenic properties have been observed in RA patients,which could help to explain the increased cardiovascular risk of these patients.

Finite-Size Conformational Transitions: A Unifying Concept Underlying Chromosome Dynamics

Investigating average thermodynamic quantities is not sufficient to understand conformational transitions of a finite-size polymer. We propose that such transitions are better described in terms of the probability distribution of some finite-size order parameter, and the evolution of this distribution as a control parameter varies. We demonstrate this claim for the coil-globule transition of a linear polymer and its mapping onto a two-state model. In a biological context, polymer models delineate the physical constraints experienced by the genome at different levels of organization,from DNA to chromatin to chromosome. We apply our finite-size approach to the formation of plectonemes in a DNA segment submitted to an applied torque and the ensuing helix-coil transition that can be numerically observed, with a coexistence of the helix and coil states in a range of parameters. Polymer models are also essential to analyze recent in vivo experiments providing the frequency of pairwise contacts between genomic loci. The probability distribution of these contacts yields quantitative information on the conformational fluctuations of chromosome regions. The changes observed in the shape of the distribution when the cell type or the physiological conditions vary may reveal an epigenetic modulation of the conformational constraints experienced by the chromosomes.

Loading calcium fluorescent probes into protoplasts to detect calcium in the flesh tissue cells of Malus domestica

Cytosolic Ca^(2+)plays a key role in signal transduction in *** imaging is the most common approach to studying dynamic changes in the cytoplasmic Ca^(2+)***,we used mature‘Fuji’apples(Malus pumila Mill.)to obtain viable protoplasts from flesh tissue cells by enzymatic hydrolysis;then,three small-molecule fluorescent probes(fluo-8/AM,fluo-4/AM,and rhod-2/AM)were loaded into the *** three Ca^(2+)fluorescent probes successfully entered the cytoplasm but did not enter the *** the Ca^(2+)chelator(EGTA)and Ca^(2+)channel blocker(la3+)reduced the fluorescence intensity in the *** calcium ionophore A23187 increased the fluorescence intensity in the cytoplasm at 5μmol/L but decreased it at 50μmol/***,A23187 reversed the fluorescence intensity in the cytoplasm,which was decreased by la3+.Ionomycin is also a calcium ionophore that can increase the fluorescence intensity of calcium in the *** results suggest that small-molecule Ca^(2+)fluorescent probes can be used to detect changes in cytosolic calcium levels in the cells of fruit flesh *** addition,the optimum concentration of fluo-8/AM was determined to be 5μmol/*** was the first time that protoplasts have been isolated from apple flesh tissue cells and small-molecule fluorescent probes have been used to detect calcium in the cytoplasm of flesh tissue *** study provides a new method to study calcium signal transduction in fruit flesh tissue.

Unveiling and Alleviating Chemical“Crosstalk”of Succinonitrile Molecules in Hierarchical Electrolyte for High-Voltage Solid-State Lithium Metal Batteries

Succinonitrile-based plastic crystal electrolytes have emerged for high-energy-density Li metal batteries in terms of their superior ambient ionic conductivity,low flammability,and benign compatibility with high voltage cathode,but are hampered by inherent instabilities toward Li *** hierarchical solid electrolytes structure is a fundamental approach to protect Li anode from succinonitrile attacks,with succinonitrile-based oxidation-resistance layer facing high voltage cathode and reduction-tolerant layer contacting Li ***,free succinonitrile molecules in succinonitrile-based electrolyte layer can diffuse across the electrolyte/electrolyte interface and further reach Li anode surface during the battery *** chemical“crosstalk”cause reduction-tolerant electrolyte layer to fail to protect the Li anode from the attacks of free succinonitrile *** Li_(6.4)la_(3)Zr_(1.4)Ta_(0.6)O_(12)is introduced creatively into succinonitrile-based electrolyte *** taking advantage of the complexation between la atoms in Li_(6.4)la_(3)Zr_(1.4)Ta_(0.6)O_(12)and N atoms in succinonitrile,the free succinonitrile molecules are successfully immobilized in succinonitrile-based electrolyte *** resulting low resistance and highly durable solid electrolyte interphase and cathode electrolyte interphase endow NCM622||Li batteries with remarkable cycle *** research provides a new idea for the real application of plastic crystal electrolytes in high voltage solid-state lithium metal batteries.

Wide emission shifts and high quantum yields of solvatochromic carbon dots with rich pyrrolic nitrogen

carbon dots(CDs)with solvatochromic emission colors in different solvents have attracted much attention as a new class of luminescent nanomaterial owing to their facile synthesis and low production *** this work,we prepared two kinds of CDs with solvatochromic emissions:green emission CDs(G-CDs)and multicolor emission CDs(M-CDs).G-CDs synthesized from o-phenylenediamine exhibited weak photoluminescence emission(quantum yield 2.8%-6.1%)and 39 nm solvatochromic shifts(492-531 nm).In contrast,M-CDs prepared from o-phenylenediamine and 4-aminophenol showed 87 nm solvatochromic shift range(505-592 nm)and much higher photoluminescence quantum yield(18.4%-32.5%).The two CDs exhibited different emission,absorption,and photoluminescence *** origin of solvatochromic shifts and the formation mechanism of CDs were demonstrated by analyzing the structures and compositions of two *** percentages of pyrrolic nitrogen and amino nitrogen make wider solvatochromic shifts and higher quantum *** results were well supported by density functional theory *** effective strategy to expand solvatochromic shift range and improve quantum yields could open a new window to prepare satisfied solvatochromic carbon dots.

Nowadays,emoji image is widely used in social *** achieve covert communication in emoji images,this paper proposes a distortion function for emoji images *** profile of image content,the intra-and inter-frame correlation are taken into account in the proposed distortion function to fit the unique properties of emoji *** three parts are combined together to measure the risks of detection due to the modification on the cover *** the popular syndrome trellis coding(STC),the distortion of stego emoji image is minimized using the proposed distortion *** a result,less detectable artifacts could be found in the stego *** results show that the proposed distortion function performs much higher undetectability than current state-of-the-art distortion function HILL which is designed for natural image.

Altered mitochondria and Bcl-2 expression in the hippocampal CA3 region in a rat model of acute epilepsy

BACKGROUND： Previous studies have shown that the mitochondrial structure and function are damaged in animal models of epilepsy. In addition, the Bcl-2 protein is capable of regulating mitochondrial stability. OBJECTIVE： To observe and validate changes in mitochondrial structure and Bcl-2 expression, and to analyze these characteristics in the hippocampal CA3 region of rat models of epilepsy. deSIGN, TIME AND SETTING： This randomized, controlled, animal experiment was performed at the laboratory of Electron Microscopy and department of Histology and Embryology, Luzhou Medical College between 2007 and 2008. MATERIALS： Coriamyrtin was provided by the Pharmacy Factory of West China University of Medical Sciences. The primary and secondary antibodies were provided by Zhongshan Goldenbridge Biotechnology, Beijing. METHODS： A total of 44 adult, male, Sprague Dawley rats were randomly divided into control （n = 11） and epilepsy （n = 33） groups. Rats in the epilepsy group were induced by coriamyrtin （50 μ g/kg）, which was injected into the lateral ventricles. The rats were then observed at 3, 6, and 24 hours after epilepsy induction, with 11 rats at each time point. Epilepsy was not induced in rats from the control group. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES： Pathological changes in the hippocampal CA3 region were observed by light microscopy; Bcl-2 expression was analyzed by immunohistochemistry; and mitochondrial changes in the hippocampus were observed under transmission electron microscopy. RESULTS：（1） The control group displayed very little Bcl-2 protein expression in the hippocampal CA3 region. However, after 3 hours of epilepsy, expression was visible. By 6 hours, expression peaked and then subsequently decreased after 24 hours, but remained higher than the control group （P 〈 0.05）. （2） Mitochondria were damaged to varying degrees in the epilepsy groups. lack of functional link in the tadpole morphology induced by predators

Most studies of predator-induced plasticity have focused on documenting how prey species re- spond to predators by modifying phenotypic traits and how traits correlate with fitness. We have previously shown that Pleurodema thaul tadpoles exposed to the dragonfly Rhionaeschna varie- gata responded strongly by showing morphological changes, less activity, and better survival than non-exposed tadpoles. Here, we tested whether there is a functional link between morphological plasticity and increased survival in the presence of predators. Tadpoles that experienced predation risk were smaller, less developed, and much less active than tadpoles without this experience. Burst speed did not correlate significantly with morphological changes and predator-induced deeper tails did not act as a lure to divert predator strikes away from the head. Although we have previously found that tadpoles with predator-induced morphology survive better under a direct predator threat, our results on the functional link between morphology and fitness are not conclu- sive. Our results suggest that in P. thaultadpoles （1） burst speed is not important to evade preda- tors, （2） those exposed to predators reduce their activity, and （3） morphological changes do not divert predator attacks away from areas that compromise tadpole survivalEE. Our results show that morphological changes in P. thaul tadpoles do not explain burst speed or lure attraction, al- though there was a clear reduction of activity, which itself reduces predation. We propose that changes in tadpole activity could be further analyzed from another perspective, with morphological change as an indirect product of behavior mediated by physiological mechanisms.
