Fault activation and induced seismicity in geological carbon storage--Lessons learned from recent modeling studies

In the light of current concerns related to induced seismicity associated with geological carbon sequestration(GCs),this paper summarizes lessons learned from recent modeling studies on fault activation,induced seismicity,and potential for leakage associated with deep underground carbon dioxide(CO2) *** simulations demonstrate that seismic events large enough to be felt by humans require brittle fault properties and continuous fault permeability allowing pressure to be distributed over a large fault patch to be ruptured at *** fault properties,which are commonly encountered in faults intersecting multilayered shale/sandstone sequences,effectively reduce the likelihood of inducing felt seismicity and also effectively impede upward CO2leakage.A number of simulations show that even a sizable seismic event that could be felt may not be capable of opening a new flow path across the entire thickness of an overlying caprock and it is very unlikely to cross a system of multiple overlying caprock ***-specific model simulations of the In salah CO2storage demonstration site showed that deep fractured zone responses and associated microseismicity occurred in the brittle fractured sandstone reservoir,but at a very substantial reservoir overpressure close to the magnitude of the least principal *** conclude by emphasizing the importance of site investigation to characterize rock properties and if at all possible to avoid brittle rock such as proximity of crystalline basement or sites in hard and brittle sedimentary sequences that are more prone to injection-induced seismicity and permanent damage.

Laparoscopic Resection of a Urachal-sigmoid Fistula in a Heart Transplant Patient

Introduction: Urachal remnants are rare in adulthood with only a few cases of urachal-sigmoid fistula reported in the literature. We report the first case of a laparoscopic resection of a urachal-sigmoid fistula resulting from diverticulitis in an immunosuppressed heart transplant patient. Case Description: The patient is a 43-year-old male who underwent an orthotopic heart transplant one month prior for dilated cardiomyopathy. His presenting symptom was abdominal pain and imaging showed a sigmoid-urachal fistula. A laparoscopic sigmoidectomy with resection of the urachal cyst and drainage of pelvic abscess was performed. The cyst was found to be contiguous and inseparable from the bladder, and therefore a small cuff of bladder was included with the specimen followed by primary laparoscopic cystorrhaphy. He had an uncomplicated hospital course. Discussion: Our case contained several unique aspects that altered the ultimate care and hospital course of the patient. Immunosuppressed patients possess multiple risk factors predictive of poor surgical outcome—infection, bleeding, and hollow organ perforation. The patient in this study was on multiple immunosuppressants and exhibited no peritoneal signs despite an elevated leukocytosis and some worrisome radiologic findings. Our decision to operate early was influenced by the aforementioned factors and led to an uncomplicated recovery.

Background: Endarterectomy has long been the standard for common femoral artery (CFA) occlusive disease. Hybrid procedures utilizing endovascular and open techniques have recently been used for revascularization. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of a stent graft to stabilize the distal flap and prevent further dissection after extensive endarterectomy. Methods: All patients from Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ from september 2008 to March 2013 who underwent an extensive common and superficial femoral (sFA) endarterectomy combined with the use of a Viabahn (Gore Medical) stent graft to stabilize the distal flap were included in the study. These stents were deployed in the proximal sFA after extensive endarterectomy, under direct visualization, without the aid of fluoroscopy. Due to the location in the sFA, these flaps were not amenable to suture tacking. Results: Fifteen patients met these criteria and were included in our study. Twelve patients underwent femoral endarterectomy for severe claudication and three patients for limb salvage. Technical success was achieved in all 15 patients. Five patients also had stents placed proximally to increase inflow and one patient had an additional stent placed distally to improve outflow. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications. Conclusion: stent graft placement allows a more extensive endarterectomy to be performed by stabilizing the distal flap allowing a safe transition into the true lumen that is not possible with suture tacking.

The High-Pulse Poroelasticity Protocol is an alternative approach for in situ rock-slope- properties estimation. It relies on an innovative probe that allows simultaneous pressure and deformation measurements in boreholes. The method consists of short-duration hydromechanical pulse tests to estimate local hydraulic and mechanical properties of fractures (normal, shear stiffnesses and permeability). Then, a long-term injection induces a large slope deformation, measured at the injection point with the HPPP probe and in the near field with tiltmeters. Fully coupled, hydromechanical, numerical elastic models are then used to match all pressure, deformation, and tilt measurements by adjusting discontinuity properties. Applied to a rock slope of fractured limestone, the Coaraze slope in southern France, the method evidenced a hyperbolic relationship between hydraulic apertures and stiffness of fractures, and enabled an estimation of fracture compressive and shear strengths. Compared to other approaches based on joint roughness analyses, this approach seems less subjective and more accurate.

Autoimmune diseases are a heterogeneous group of disorders affecting different organs and tissues whose incidence are increasing worldwide. New tools, such as genome-wide association studies, have provided evidence for new susceptibility loci and candidate genes in the disease process including common susceptibility genes involved in the immunological synapse and T cell activation. Close linkages have been found in a number of diseases, including ankylosing spondylitis, multiple sclerosis, Crohn’s disease and insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (Type 1 diabetes mellitus). The evidence for some associations with Type 1 diabetes was previously found in the region containing 5q15/ERAP1 (endoplasmic reticulum aminopeptidase 1) (rs30187, ARTs1). Our aim was to conduct the first casecontrol study to test the association between the rs30187 polymorphism of ERAP1 and the development of Type 1 diabetes mellitus in patients selected from continental Italy. All control subjects were matched for the sex, age, ethnic origin and geographical area. Genotyping of the rs30187 polymorphism of ERAP1 was carried out by the allelic discrimination assay on DNA extracted from whole blood. We did not observe a statistically significant prevalence of the rs30187 polymorphism of ERAP1 in our cohort of patients than in controls suggesting a minor contribution of this gene to the pathogenesis of Type 1 diabetes mellitus in Italian patients.

Normal ageing as well as age associated pathological conditions, such as Alzh eimers disease, are associated with modifications of language processing. In p articular, an impaired performance in semantic tasks, associated with relatively spared syntactic processing, has been suggested to be the hallmark of the langu age disorder of Alzheimers disease. The present experiment tests semantic and syntactic aspects of language processing at the same time, using an on line par adigm, in patients with Alzheimers disease, compared with elderly and young co ntrols. Normal ageing was associated with a profile of performance, which was sl owed but qualitatively comparable with that of young controls. Both gender agree ment and congruent sentential semantics resulted in facilitation relative to bas eline in young and elderly controls, with no significant interference effects of incongruent grammatical and semantic information. In contrast, Alzheimers dis ease patients presented both facilitation and interference effects. These findin gs suggest that interference effects are amplified by dementia, and may result f rom defective inhibitory processes due to Alzheimers disease pathology.
