The visual spatial attention mechanism in the brain was studied in 16 young subjects through the visual search paradigm of precue-target by the event-related potential (ERP) technique, with the attentive ranges cued by different scales of Chinese character and region cues. The results showed that the response time for Chinese character cues was much longer than that for region cues especially for small region cues. With the exterior interferences, the target stimuli recognition under region cues was much quicker than that under Chinese character cues. Compared with that under region cues, targets under Chinese character cues could lead to increase of the posterior P1, decrease of the N1 and increase of the P2. It should also be noted that the differences between region cues and Chinese character cues were affected by the interference types. Under exterior interferences, no significant difference was found between region cues and Chinese character cues; however, it was not the case under the interior interferences. Considering the difference between the exterior interferences and the interior interferences, we could conclude that with the increase of difficulty in target recognition there was obvious difference in the consumption of anterior frontal resources by target stimuli under the two kinds of cues.

Portal hypertension is a common disease with high mortality and serious influence on the life quality of patients. At present, shunt and disconnection are commonly used for the treatment of portal hyperten- sion. In recent years, combined procedures of shunt and disconnection have evoked the potential interest of surgeons. Initial experimental studies and clinical observations showed that the combined procedures are ideal for treating portal hypertension. Transju- gular intrahepatic portacaval shunt (TIPS) is a new minimally invasive technique in treating portal hy- pertension. Some surgeons have tried to perform dis- connection under laparoscopy with success. Liver transplantation will be the focus of portal hyperten- sion surgery in the future.

To investigate whether the expression of exogenous heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) gene within vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC) could protect the cells from free radical attack and inhibit cell proliferation, we established an in vitro transfection of human HO-1 gene into rat VSMC mediated by a retroviral vector. The results showed that the profound expression of HO-1 protein as well as HO activity was 1.8- and 2.0-fold increased respectively in the transfected cells compared to the non-transfected ones. The treatment of VSMC with different concentrations of H2O2 led to the remarkable cell damage as indicated by survival rate and LDH leakage. However, the resistance of the HO-1 transfected VSMC against H2O2 was significantly raised. This protective effect was dramatically diminished when the transfected VSMC were pretreated with ZnPP-IX, a specific inhibitor of HO, for 24 h. Methylene chloride extracts of particulates from liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) combustion appliance were studied by using Ames test, micronucleus test and inducibility of pulmonary and hepatic aryl hydrocarbon hydroxylase (AHH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) in rats. The extracts showed mutagenicity for Salmonella typhimurium strain TA98 and its derivatives TA98NR and TA98/1,8-DNP6 with or without S9 mix. The revertants in strains TA98NR and TA98/1,8-DNP6 were less than 40% and 50% of that in strain TA98 without S9 mix, respectively. Positive results were obtained in mouse bone marrow micronucleus assay. Intratracheal instillation of the extracts led to increase in pulmonary (but not hepatic) AHH and GST activities in rats. Background: An ideal aneurysm model of cerebral aneurysm is of great importance for studying the pathogenesis of the lesion and testing new techniques for diagnosis and treatment. Several models have been created in rabbits and are now widely used in experimental studies; however, every model has certain intrinsic limitations. Here we report the development of a novel saccular aneurysm model in rabbits using an arterial pouch that is subject to in vitro pre-digestion with combined elastase and collagenase. Methods: A segment of right common carotid artery (CCA) was dissected out and treated with elastase (60 U/ml, 20 min) followed by type I collagenase (1 mg/ml, 15 min) in vitro. The graft was anastomosed to an arterial arch built with the left CCA and the remaining right CCA, while the other end of the graft was ligated. The dimension and tissue structure of the pouch were analysed immediately, 2 or 8 weeks after operation. Findings: Ten terminal aneurysms were produced. The gross mor-phology of the aneurysm resembles the human cerebral terminal aneurysms. We have observed the following pathological changes: (1) growth of the aneurysm (mean diameter increased from (2.0±0.1) to (3.2±0.3) mm at 2 weeks, P<0.001, n=7~10); (2) thinning of the aneurysmal wall (the mean wall thickness decreased to 44% at 2 weeks), which was accompanied by significant losses of elastic fibres, collagen and the cellular component; and (3) spontaneous rupture (3 out of 9, one aneurysm ruptured 24 h after operation with the other two at 2 and 4 weeks respectively). Conclusion: This rabbit arterial pouch model mimics human cerebral aneurysms in relation to morphology and histology. In particular, this model exhibited an increased tendency of spontaneous rupture.

BACKGROUND:Signal regulatory protein alpha1(Sirpα1) is a member of Sirps families containing four immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs(ITIMs) domains in the cytoplasm of and an activated substrate of receptor tyrosine kinase(RTK),that negatively regulates the RTK-dependent cell proliferating signal transduction *** we found that Sirpα1 was closely associated with the occurrence and development of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)as well as liver *** it is unclear about the regulatory mechanisms,we established the cell line transfected Sirpα1 gene and preliminarily clarified the mechanisms by which Sirpα1 negatively regulates the carcinogenesis and development of HCC. METHODS:Liver cancer Sk-Hep1 cell was respectively transfected with plasmids of pLXSN,pLXSN-Sirpα1 and pLXSN-Sirpα1Δ4Y 2 ,screened with the drug of G418(1200 μg/ml),and various transfected Sk-Hep1 cell lines were *** protein expressions of P65,P50,IκBα,cyclin D1 and Fas in various Sk-Hep1 cell lines were determined by Western blotting,and P65 and P50 were localized by the immunofluorescence technique. RESULTS:Sirpα1 could significantly upregulate the protein expression of IκBα(*** cell lines,P<0.05) in the Sk-Hep1 cell,and downregulate the protein expressions of P65,P50 and cyclin D1(*** cell lines, P<0.05)in the Sk-Hep1 cell.P65 protein expression was mainly localized in the cytoplasm in the pLXSN Sk-Hep1 cell,and in the nucleus of the Sk-Hep1 cell with mutantSirpα1Δ4Y 2 ,but in nucleus of the Sk-Hep1 cell with wild Sirpα1.P50 protein expression was localized in the cytoplasm and nucleus of the pLXSN Sk-Hep1 cell,but in the nucleus of the Sk-Hep1 cell with wild Sirpα1 and mutant Sirpα1Δ4Y 2 plasmid.
