The protective effect of vitamin E on gastric mucosal injury in rats with cirrhosis of the liver

Objective To evaluate the functional and morphologic features of stomach in liver cirrhosis model and the cytoprotective effects of Vitamin E. Methods Experimental cirrhosis was induced in rats by subcutaneous administration of 0.4 ml CCl 4 (diluted 1∶4 with olive oil) per kilogram of body weight twice a week for 12 weeks. Rats were divided into three groups. Group 1 was control. Group 2 consisted cirrhotic rats induced by CCl 4 and Group 3 cirrhotic rats treated with Vitamin E (intramuscularly 100 mg/kg per day during study). At the end of 12 weeks, gastric mucosal injury was produced by instillation of absolute alcohol via an orogastric tube. After 3 hours, each animal was sacrificed. The stomachs were macroscopically, microscopically and biochemically analyzed. Results Macroscopic and microscopic area of gastric mucosal injury were significant.y larger in cirrhotic rats (Pcant.y lower in group 3 as compared with group 2 (P<0.001). Conclusion Gastric mucosa in cirrhotic rats has distinctive histological and functional abnormalities. These abnormalities can be reversed by Vitamin E or other antioxidants.

Studies on litterfall and decomposition provide estimations of decomposition rates of different *** is key information to understanding ecosystem dynamics and changes in a scenario of global *** objective of this research was to assess litterfall production,the potential deposition of macro and micronutrients through leaf and twig fall as well as macronutrient—use efficiency in three forest ecosystems at different altitudes： a pine forest mixed with deciduous species（S1）; a Quercus ***（S2）; and,a Tamaulipan thornscrub forest（S3）.Total annual litterfall deposition was 594,742 and 533 g m^（-2） for S1,S2 and *** litter was higher （68%） than twigs（18%）,reproductive structures（8%） or miscellaneous material（6%）.Micronutrient leaf deposition was higher for Fe followed by Mn,Zn and *** leaf deposition was higher for Ca followed by K,mg and *** though P deposition in leaves and twigs was lower than other macronutrients,its nutrient use efficiency was higher than Ca,mg or *** and species composition determine litter and nutrient deposition,with higher values at mid-altitudes（550 m）.Altitude is an important factor to consider when analyzing litter production as well as nutrient deposition as shown in this *** production and nutrient deposition are expected to change in a scenario of global warming.

Objective. A delay in gastric emptying has been reported in patients with gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD),but its role in increasing the number of reflux episodes is still debated. The aim of this study was to assess the relationship between acceleration of gastric emptying and gastro-oesophageal reflux in patients with endoscopy-negative GORD and pathological oesophageal acid exposure. Material and methods. Twelve patients (7 M, age range 24-65 years) underwent 6-h postprandial (2.1 MJ meal) combi-ned gastric emptying by real-time ultrasonography and intr-a-oesophageal pH monitoring after cisapride (20 mg b.i.d.)and placebo for 3 days, on two separate occasions at least 7 days apart in double-blind randomized order. Gastric emptying after placebo was also measured in 12 healthy volunteers (7M, age range 25-54 years). Results. In the patients’ group, the area under the emptying time curve was greater (p < 0.01), and half and total emptying times prolonged (p < 0.01) compared to the healthy subjects, 115 min (mean)±6 (SEM) versus 86±6 and 232 min±16 versus 160±7, respectively. Cisapride accelerated both half-and total gastric emptying (p < 0.02): -22 min (mean); -10 to -34 (95%CI) and -48 min; -10 to -85, respectively, decreased both percentage of time at pH < 4 (p < 0.01) and number of reflux episodes (p < 0.05). However, no relationship was found between changes in gastric emptying and in the reflux variables by linear regression analysis (R2 < 0.005). Conclusion. The emptying rate of the whole stomach is not a major determinant of gastrooesophageal reflux.
