The effects.of the s.lt s.res. on plant growth are us.ally increas.d by the water s.res.. We s.udied the impact of both s.res.es.in s.multaneous.puls.s.of drought and s.linity on Pas.alum dilatatum. This.forage s.ecies.is.native to s.uth America, s.read in gras.lands.in many tropical, s.btropical, and temperate areas.of the world, and very common in gras.lands.of the Flooding Pampas.of Argentina. Mimicking what happens.in nature. We compared a pot experiment, a non-s.res.ed control agains. water s.res. for a month (midpoint between field capacity and wilting point), and two s.line s.res.es.(moderate, 6 dd.le dot>s.-1 and s.rong, 12 dd.le dot>s.-1), als. for a month. Aerial biomas. (green leaf; non-leaf green material, and dry material) and roots.were harves.ed, weighed, and analyzed for nitrogen, phos.horus. and cations. The biomas. of all components.s.gnificantly decreas.d when both s.res.es.were applied. Water plus.s.rong s.line s.res. reduced by half the total biomas.es. compared to the control. The proportion of aerial biomas./root biomas. ratio as.well as.aerial green component/dry materials.ratio tend to decreas. when s.bjected to both s.res.es. Nitrogen concentration in plants.was.not s.gnificantly affected, but phos.horus.concentration increas.d in aerial biomas. components. from 0.10 to 0.18 mgd.le dot>kg-1 between the extreme treatments. but did not change in roots. s.dium concentration in plants.increas.d (i.e., in green leave s.dium (Na) increas.d from 0.27 to 2.01 mgd.le dot>kg-1 between the extreme treatments., whereas.other cations.either did not change or decreas.d, affecting the ratios.between them. s.dium performance allows.us.to infer that the Na accumulation of P. dilatatum behaves.in an intermediate range, compared to very tolerant to s.lts.or non-s.lt tolerant s.ecies.of the Pas.alum genus. In agreement, when s.lts.were applied in the form of a puls., P. dilatatum tolerated higher s.linity than that found by other authors.for the s.
