Rainfall simulators(RS)have been used,above all,to evaluate hydrological processes related to soil water infiltration,surface runoff and soil erosion.They allow repeatability of rain application with different precipitation intensities in field and/or laboratory conditions and should produce events with physical characteristics similar to natural rain.In this manuscript,we carried out a bibliometric and scientometric analysis of studies with simulated rainfall in Brazil to assess the temporal evolution of publications,the main topics addressed and the degree of technological development of the equipment.We searched for the terms“rainfall simulator”OR“simulated rainfall”AnD“Brazil”in the Scopus,Web of Science,SciELO and Google Scholar databases.We found 143 articles published in the last 37 years(1985-2022).Our findings indicate that the main research areas covered in papers are soil erosion(57.34%),soil water infiltration(24.47%),nutrient losses(9.8%)and RS development and calibration/assessment(8.39%).In recent years,the number of published papers in international high-impact factor journals has increased.Most of the papers(49.65%)refer to studies carried out by institutions located in the south and southeast regions of Brazil.Moreover,there is a large gap of studies on simulated rainfall in other regions of Brazil,where important biomes such as the Cerrado,Amazon,Caatinga,and their transitions are located.This study informs research priorities on soil erosion under simulated rainfall and provides a bibliographic database that can assist in more detailed future analyses.

Background: The protective role of (poly)phenols against metabolic disorders has been extensively studied in adults but not in adolescents.Objective: To assess associations of dietary (poly)phenols and their subclasses with cardiometabolic health parameters in adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in 944 individuals aged 11 to 14 years enrolled in the SI! Program for Secondary Schools trial (nCT03504059). (Poly)phenol intake was assessed using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaires and the Phenol-Explorer database. The measured cardiometabolic parameters were waist circumference (WC) age-sex z-score， blood pressure (BP) age-sex z-score， blood glucose (BG)， triglycerides (TG)， and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-c). Multilevel mixed-effect linear regression models were applied to examine the association between (poly)phenol quintiles and cardiometabolic health parameters.Results: Compared to the lowest quintile， adolescents in the highest quintile of total (poly)phenol intake had lower WC z-scores (β=-0.09， 95%CI=-0.09;-0.08， P-for trend=0.002)， mean arterial pressure z-scores (β =-0.11， 95%CI=-0.12;-0.09， P-for trend=0.206)， and HDL-c (β=-1.52， 95%CI=-2.90;-0.14， P-for trend=0.108)， after multivariable adjustment. The WC z-scores (β=-0.11， 95%CI=-0.19;-0.03， P-for trend=0.013) and HDL-c (β=-2.16， 95%CI=-3.78;-0.53， P-for trend=0.046) were lower in the highest quintile of flavonoid intake compared to the lowest quintile. The highest quintile of phenolic acid intake was associated with a lower WC z-score (β=-0.14， 95%CI=-0.26;-0.02， P-for trend=0.011) and TG levels (β=-8.83， 95%CI=-12.37;-5.30， P-for trend nd the highest quintile of stilbene intake with lower BG (β=-1.83， 95%CI= -3.103;-0.64， P-for trend nd TG (β=-3.22， 95%CI= -4.95;-1.49， P-for trend=0.034)， and with higher HDL-c (β=2.328， 95%CI= 1.40;3.17， P-for trend=0.466) compared to the lowest quintile. Physiological performance in lizards may be affected by climate across latitudinal or altitudinal gradients.In the coastal dune barriers in central-eastern Argentina,the annual maximum environmental temperature decreases up to 2℃ from low to high latitudes,while the mean relative humidity of the air decreases from 50%to 25%.Liolaemus multimaculatus,a lizard in the family Liolaemidae,is restricted to these coastal dunes.We investigated the locomotor performance of the species at 6 different sites distributed throughout its range in these dune barriers.We inquired whether locomotor performance metrics were sensitive to the thermal regime attributable to latitude.The thermal performance breadth increased from 7%to 82%with latitude,due to a decrease in its critical thermal minimum of up to 5℃ at higher latitudes.Lizards from high latitude sites showed a thermal optimum,that is,the body temperature at which maximum speed is achieved,up to 4℃lower than that of lizards from the low latitude.At relatively low temperatures,the maximum running speed of high-latitude individuals was faster than that of low-latitude ones.Thermal parameters of locomotor performance were labile,decreasing as a function of latitude.These results show populations of L.multimaculatus adjust thermal physiology to cope with local climatic variations.This suggests that thermal sensitivity responds to the magnitude of latitudinal fluctuations in environmental temperature.

Cancer cells,in which the RAS and PI3K pathways are activated,produce high levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS),which cause oxidative DnA damage and ultimately cellular senescence.This process has been documented in tissue culture,mouse models,and human pre-cancerous lesions.In this context,cellular senescence functions as a tumour suppressor mechanism.Some rare cancer cells,however,manage to adapt to avoid senescence and continue to proliferate.One well-documented mode of adaptation involves increased production of antioxidants often associated with inactivation of the KEAP1 tumour suppressor gene and the resulting upregulation of the nRF2 transcription factor.In this review,we detail an alternative mode of adaptation to oxidative DnA damage induced by ROS:the increased activity of the base excision repair(BER)pathway,achieved through the enhanced expression of BER enzymes and DnA repair accessory factors.These proteins,exemplified here by the CUT domain proteins CUX1,CUX2,and SATB1,stimulate the activity of BER enzymes.The ensued accelerated repair of oxidative DnA damage enables cancer cells to avoid senescence despite high ROS levels.As a by-product of this adaptation,these cancer cells exhibit increased resistance to genotoxic treatments including ionizing radiation,temozolomide,and cisplatin.Moreover,considering the intrinsic error rate associated with DnA repair and translesion synthesis,the elevated number of oxidative DnA lesions caused by high ROS leads to the accumulation of mutations in the cancer cell population,thereby contributing to tumour heterogeneity and eventually to the acquisition of resistance,a major obstacle to clinical treatment.

Indirect effects of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)pandemic are difficult to calculate.Fear of intrahospital infection has led to a decrease in the use of emergency services and the performance of elective procedures.Several low-and middle-income countries have seen the number of institutional deliveries reduced,even in the absence of a follow-up program for home births.We present the case of a patient with adequate prenatal care and an institutional delivery plan who,due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic,chose to have a home delivery with unsafe conditions.The lack of supervision by health personnel and the absence of an immediate consultation plan facilitated the presentation of postpartum hemorrhage and poor neonatal results.Little attention has been paid during the pandemic to pregnant women who decide to have their birth at home.A broad discussion is necessary in this regard,to regain the confidence of the population and strengthen institutional births,or to strengthen midwifeassisted home births programs.Patients’fear to acquiring SARS-CoV-2 infection inside hospitals is a factor that must be taken into account in prenatal care programs.

Rationale: Co-infection of human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) and Leishmania spp. has impact on clinical and therapeutic outcomes of leishmaniases. Most studies do not present the identification of Leishmania species causing American tegumentary leishmaniasis in co-infections. In the Americas, Leishmania(L.) Viannia(V.) braziliensis and L.(V.) guyanensis have been identified. Patient concerns: In this study, two cases of American tegumentary leishmaniasis in patients infected with HIV are described. Patients presented several lesions with rapid dissemination and mucosal involvement. Diagnosis: Disseminated cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by L. amazonensis was identified by molecular test. Interventions: The patients were treated with conventional therapies for HIV infection and American tegumentary leishmaniasis. Outcomes: In co-infection, the clinical manifestations are atypical and the treatment response can be impaired. Lessons: These cases show that HIV infection impacts L. amazonensis infection and point to the relevance of identifying Leishmania species, which can lead to a better patient management.

In highly urbanized areas,pollution from anthropogenic activities has compromised the integrity of the land,decreasing soil availability for agricultural practices.Dibenzothiophene(DBT)is a heterocyclic aromatic hydrocarbon frequently found in urbanized areas,and is often used as a model chemical to study the microbial transformation of pollutants.The potential for human exposure and its health risk makes DBT a chemical of concern;thus,it needs to be environmentally managed.We utilized glycerol to stimulate Burkholderia sp.C3 in order to degrade DBT in respect to①DBT biodegradation kinetics,②bacterial growth,③rhamnolipid(RL)biosynthesis,and④RL secretion.Under an optimum glycerol-to-DBT molar ratio,the DBT biodegradation rate constants increased up to 18-fold and enhanced DBT biodegradation by 25%–30%at day 1 relative to cultivation with DBT alone.This enhancement was correlated with an increase in bacterial growth and RL biosynthesis.Proteomics studies revealed the enzymes involved in the upper and main steps of RL biosynthesis.The RL congeners Rha-C10-C10,Rha-Rha-C10-C10,Rha-Rha-C10-C12,and Rha-Rha-C12-C12 were identified in the medium supplemented with glycerol and DBT,whereas only Rha-C12-C12 was identified in cultures without glycerol or with RL inhibitors.The studies indicated that glycerol enhances DBT biodegradation via increased RL synthesis and bacterial growth.The results warrant further studies of environmental biostimulation with glycerol to advance bioremediation technologies and increase soil availability for agricultural purposes.

Epigenetic changes have been shown to be associated with both aging process and aging-related diseases.There is evidence regarding the benefits of physical activity on the functionality,cognition,and quality of life of institutionalized older adults,however,the molecular mechanisms involved are not elucidated.The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the effects of a multimodal exercise intervention on functional outcomes,cognitive performance,quality of life(QOL),epigenetic markers and brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDnF)levels among institutionalized older adult individuals.Participants(n=8)without dementia who were aged 73.38±11.28 years and predominantly female(87.5%)were included in this quasi-experimental pilot study.A multimodal exercise protocol(cardiovascular capacity,strength,balance/agility andﬂexibility,perception and cognition)consisted of twice weekly sessions(60 minutes each)over 8 weeks.Balance(Berg Scale),mobility(Timed Up and Go test),functional capacity(Six-Minute Walk test),cognitive function(Mini-Mental State Examination)and QOL(the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF Scale questionnaire)were evaluated before and after the intervention.Blood sample(15 mL)was also collected before and after intervention for analysis of biomarkers global histone H3 acetylation and brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels.Significant improvements were observed in cognitive function,balance,mobility,functional capacity and QOL after the intervention.In addition,a tendency toward an increase in global histone H3 acetylation levels was observed,while brain-derived neurotrophic factor level remained unchanged.This study provided evidence that an 8-week multimodal exercise protocol has a significant effect on ameliorating functional outcomes and QOL in institutionalized older adult individuals.In addition,it was also able to promote cognitive improvement,which seems to be partially related to histone hyperacetylation status.The Ethics Research Committee of Centro Universitário Metodista-IPA,Bra

DE-ETIOLATED 1(DET1)and COnSTITUTIVE PHOTOMORPHOGEnESIS 1(COP1)are two essential repressors of Arabidopsis photomorphogenesis.These proteins can associate with CULLIn4 to form independent CRL4-based E3 ubiquitin ligases that mediate the degradation of several photomorphogenic transcription factors,including ELOnGATED HYPOCOTYL 5(HY5),thereby controlling multiple gene-regulatory networks.Despite extensive biochemical and genetic analyses of their multi-subunit complexes,the functional links between DET1 and COP1 have long remained elusive.Here,we report that DET1 associates with COP1 in vivo,enhances COP1-HY5 interaction,and promotes COP1 destabilization in a process that dampens HY5 protein abundance.By regulating its accumulation,DET1 avoids HY5 association with hundreds of second-site genomic loci,which are also frequently targeted by the skotomorphogenic transcription factor PHYTOCHROME-InTERACTInG FACTOR 3.Accordingly,ectopic HY5 chromatin enrichment favors local gene repression and can trigger fusca-like phenotypes.This study therefore shows that DET1-mediated regulation of COP1 stability tunes down the HY5 cistrome,avoiding hyper-photomorphogenic responses that might compromise plant viability.
