Long-term monitoring reveals the effect of precipitation and silviculture on Nothofagus regeneration in Northern Patagonia mixed forests

Background Tree regeneration is a key component of resilience because it promotes post-disturbance recovery of forests. Northwestern Patagonia from Argentina is occupied by Nothofagus alpina（Na）, N. obliqua（No）, and N. dombeyi（Nd） forests that grow along an intense precipitation gradient, managed throughout shelterwood silvicultural system by technicians of the Lanin Natural Reserve. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of seeding cuttings over the dynamics of Nothofagus mixed forests across landscape（precipitation gradient） based mainly on the composition and abundance of tree regeneration, permanent sampling plots and generalized linear mixed models. In particular, we analysed:（i） the structure of sexual and asexual regeneration during d > 20 years after harvest（the dynamics of managed forests）, and（ii） the structure of sexual regeneration in primary and managed forests after > 20 years of harvest（the effect of silviculture）.Results Nd was the most abundant species in the regeneration of managed forests during all periods in both sites despite its lower contribution to the adult cohort. during the 10–20 years period after harvest, the humid site exhibited higher regeneration density than the mesic site(120,000 and 6000 ind ha-1, respectively), and it decreased afterwards. The number of established regeneration（> 2 m height） was lower for Na in the mesic site and for No in the humid site(0 and 57 ind ha-1, respectively). However, in comparison to No, Na showed a higher number of sprouted stumps and sprouts per stump, and a higher sprout height in the mesic site. No exhibited higher sprout mortality in the humid site. Acute Tonsillopharyngitis: Photosensitizer Fluorescence-Guided in Topical Therapy

Background: As is observed in acute respiratory pandemics characterized by inflammation of the oropharynx, microbial transmission caused by viruses and bacteria through the upper respiratory tract can quickly affect the lower respiratory tract due to its ease of transmission, The challenges are presented in the development of an adequate lighting system to prevent infections of the upper respiratory treatment and highlight the importance of following the procedure due to fluorescence decay from the given light dose. Methods: for this purpose, our study evaluated the lighting distribution on the oropharynx established and determined under simulation by TracePro software. The photobleaching (PB) is obtained by different fluorescence analysis methods of photosensitizer (PS) in formulation located in the oropharynx and tonsils. A blue light emission system at 450 nm was studied to improve the distribution, uniformity, and ray’s incidence. The PB of the PS was investigated using two different methods for detecting fluorescence in the oropharynx by quantifying the active portion of the PS assessed by fluorescence spectroscopy for patients with pharyngotonsillitis by consuming 2.25 mg of curcumin in formulation after applying light by analysis of images in Software MatLab. Results: The lighting device showed a uniformity of 82% in the oropharynx. In healthy volunteers, the minimum energy of photodegradation of curcumin is 0.2 and the maximum energy is 17.4 J/cm2. We observed intensities of blue and green emission of the analyzed fluorescence images related to PS through fluorescence measurements. Conclusions: We conclude that the pharyngotonsillitis infections can be treated by using an adequate distribution of light in the oropharynx and by activating photosensitizing agents in the infection sites supported by the fluorescence of the compound.

Morphological and kinetic parameters of the absorption of nitrogen forms for selection of Eucalyptus clones

Eucalyptus clones are selected according to productivity,wood quality,rooting capacity,and resistance to drought,frost and ***,kinetic and morphological parameters that determine the absorption efficiency of nutrients such as nitrate(NO_(3)^(-)) and ammonium(NH_(4)^(+))are often not considered in breeding *** objective of this study was to evaluate the morphological,physiological and kinetic parameters of nitrogen uptake by clones of Eucalyptus saligna(32,864) and Eucalyptus grandis(GPC23).Morphological parameters in shoot and root systems,biomass and N concentrations in different organs,photosynthetic pigment concentrations,parameters of chlorophyll a fluorescence and photosynthetic rates were *** parameters,maximum absorption velocity(V_(max)),Michaelis-Menten constant(K_(m)),minimum concentration(C_(min)) and influx(I) were calculated for NO_(3)^(-)and NH_(4)^(+) in the two *** clone was more efficient in the uptake of NO_(3)^(-)and NH_(4)^(+),and showed lower K_(m) and C_(min)values,allowing for the absorption of nitrogen at low concentrations due to the high affinity of the absorption sites of clone roots to NO_(3)^(-)and NH_(4)^(+).Higher root lengths,area and volume helped the *** clone in absorption efficiency and consequently,resulted in higher root and shoot *** *** clone had higher K_(m) and Cmin for NO_(3)^(-)and NH_(4)^(+),indicating adaptation to environments with higher N *** results of NO_(3)^(-)and NH_(4)^(+) kinetic parameters indicate that they can be used in Eucalyptus clone selection and breeding programs as they can predict the ability of clones to absorb NO_(3)^(-)and NH_(4)^(+) at different concentrations.

Nutritional Profile of Oncology Patients from an Outpatient Nutritional Service in Brazil

Objective To characterize the nutritional variables of patients referred to an outpatient oncology nutrition *** The electronic medical records of patients diagnosed with malignant neoplasms were analyzed for several parameters:weight loss,body mass index(BMI),hand-grip strength(HGS),fat-free mass index(FFMI)and serum C-reactive protein(CRP).Statistical methods included Pearson’s correlation(significance was set at P≤0.05).Results There was a high prevalence of malnutrition(44%,n=28)and sarcopenia(61%,n=23)and a relatively low prevalence of cachexia(13%,n=6).Moderate positive correlations were observed between the tumor site and CRP level,correlation r=0.328(P=0.026);the tumor site and BMI(r=0,P=0.001);FFMI and BMI(r=0.606,P=4.334056e-005)and CRP and weight loss(r=0.355,P=0.024).There were negative correlations between the tumor staging and BMI (r=-0.409,P=0.001)and weight loss and FFMI(r=-0.467,P=3,228325e-004).Conclusion These preliminary findings may help institutions implement nutritional approaches,such as the adoption of a line-ofcare focused on nutrition in the department of oncology.

PNPLA3 and TM6SF2 polymorphisms in Brazilian patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease

Profile of Patients Treated in Outpatient Vestibular Rehabilitation at a Hospital in São Paulo

Introduction: Currently it is very common that the search for diagnosis and treatment for curing diseases can cause vertigo or dizziness. Objective: This study sought to characterize the profile of patients seen in the clinic for vestibular rehabilitation in a tertiary hospital in the last 10 years. Methods: Survey questionnaires of patients with dizziness. Results: The prevalence of treated subjects was female 65.3% (N = 439). The average age was 54.9 years old. dizziness type roundabout was more prevalent 33.04% (N = 222). Tinnitus occurred in 58.33% of the population. The time of most observed dizziness was less than 5 years 70.68% (N = 475). Neurovegetative symptoms appeared in 63.98% (N = 430) of the population. The bilateral normal hearing was more standard 35.26% (N = 237). The topographic diagnosis of peripheral origin was the most usual 65.47% (N = 440). Conclusion: The peripheral otoneurologic involvement was more prevalent in this population, affecting more women at an average age of 54.9 years old. The most prevalent symptoms were vertigo, nausea, tachycardia, sweating, vomiting and tinnitus, characterizing the peripheral vestibular impairment. The time of dizziness was less than five years. Audiological standard normal curve was predominant and the symptom of tinnitus was the most reported. The most prevalent comorbidity was Hypertension.

Background: Adolescents are disproportionally affected by sexually transmitted infections (STI). Chlamydia trachomatis (CT) and Trichomonas vaginalis (TV) are the most frequent curable STI in adolescents, causing serious consequences for their reproductive health. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence and incidence of CT and TV, as well as their risk factors in pregnant adolescents from Belém, northern Brazilian Amazon. Methods: This prospective study enrolled 199 adolescents up to 20 weeks of pregnancy. They were scheduled for follow-up visit between 28 and 29 weeks of pregnancy. Sociodemographic and behavioral data were obtained by interview. Cervicovaginal samples were taken to test for TV, CT, Neisseria gonorrhoeae and bacterial vaginosis. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to test the association of prevalent/incident CT and TV with the variables. Results: Prevalence of cervical CT infection was 33.7% (n = 67/ 199), and for trichomoniasis it was 4.0% (n = 8/199). Cervical ectopy increased the risk for prevalent CT (OR, 1.93;95% CI, 1.01 - 3.70), while having treated vaginal discharge in the past (OR, 0.51;95% CI, 0.26 - 0.98) and being married (OR, 0.10;95% CI, 0.01 - 0.83) were protective against current CT and TV, respectively. Among the 95 (47.7%) adolescents who completed follow-up, 15 cases of incident CT were identified. Incident CT was associated with having a formal or informal job (OR, 28.4;95% CI, 2.1 - 391.6) and bacterial vaginosis treatment at the baseline (OR, 0.08;95% CI, 0.01 - 0.69). Conclusion: Prevalence and incidence rates of TV and CT are high in this population devoid of STI routine screening. Treatment of bacterial vaginosis may benefit this population by reducing risk for CT acquisition.

Saturation Levels by Bases and Time of Incubation in the development and Growth of Ornamental Sunflower

Floriculture is a promising segment of Brazilian agriculture. The ornamental sunflower (Helianthus annuus L. cv. Folded Sungold), also known as dwarf sunflower, in addition to being used in gardens can be marketed as cut flower or vase. The sunflower represents a great alternative for small producers because it requires little space, has easy handling and short cycle, besides providing greater economic return. In this context, we aimed to evaluate the development of this culture submitted to different levels of saturation per base, combined with the incubation time of the limestone. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse at the Federal University of Mato Grosso-University Campus of Rondonópolis. A randomized block design with factorial scheme 6 × 2 was used, with six levels of saturation per base: 0, 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, 100%;and two incubation times: 0 and 30 days, resulting in 12 treatments with four replicates, totaling 48 experimental units. Each plot consisted of a plastic polyethylene vessel with a capacity of 1.2 dm−3. The following variables were analyzed: Height of the floral stem;number of leaves, diameter of chapters;root volume;fresh mass of leaves;fresh mass of floral stems;fresh mass of chapters;fresh root mass and chlorophyll index (SPAd). data were submitted to analysis of variance by the test F at 5% probability of error. The qualitative factors were submitted to the Tukey test and quantitative factors to the regression test, both with a 5% probability of error. Basal saturation levels of 80% and 100%, in the treatment with incubated soil, provided higher quality of inflorescence for commercialization purposes.
