BACKGROUND Radiation induces rapid bone loss and enhances bone resorption and adipogenesis, leading to an increased risk of bone fracture. For in vitro study, mouse bone marrow mesenchymal stem/stromal cells(BM-MsCs) were irradiated with Co-60 at a single dose of 9 Gy. For osteoclast induction, monocyte-macrophage RAW264.7 cells were cocultured with mouse BM-MsCs for 7 d. Clus Pro and Inter Pro surf were used to investigate the interaction interface in Crif1 and protein kinase cyclic adenosine monophosphate(c AMP)-activited catalytic subunit alpha complex. Virtual screening using 462608 compounds from the Life Chemicals database around his120 of Crif1 was carried out using the program Autodock_vina. A tetrazolium salt(WsT-8) assay was carried out to study the toxicity of compounds to different cells, including human BM-MsCs, mouse BMMsCs, and Vero *** Crif1 expression increased in bone marrow cells after radiation in *** of Crif1 in mouse BM-MsCs and radiation exposure could increase RANKL secretion and promote osteoclastogenesis in vitro. This paper reports the modeling of residual compressive strength of fired clay bricks submitted to elevated temperature. Five formulations were used and the explored temperatures were 95˚C, 200˚C, 550˚C, 700˚C and 950˚C. The stress–strain relationships and the mechanical properties (including Young’s modulus and compressive strength) were assessed using a uniaxial compressive strength machine. A proposed model equation was established and found satisfying. The elastic modulus was evaluated and tested with one existing model together with two proposed models. The proposed model was both satisfying and even more precise than the existing one. The overall results show that the effect of temperature on the mechanical properties of clays can be accurately described through the definition of thermal damage using elastic modulus.

The Contribution of Tanzanian National Parks in Controlling the Vectors of sleeping sickness

This paper summarises efforts to control sleeping sickness [human African Trypanosomiasis (hAT)] by Tsetse flies and Trypanosomiaisis (T & T) control for the 7 consecutive years although started a decade ago in Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA). These efforts are critical for curbing hAT incidences and hAT epidemics. hAT cases have had profound negative impacts on human health, affecting local residents and international travel as well as tourism industry resulting into human and animal health burden and reduction in tourism income. Understanding the current efforts is essential in the proper planning and decision making on developing effective control strategy against T & T control. In this paper, we summarize the recent efforts in the control of T & T in National Parks and discuss the constraints faced. The information will enable TANAPA and other concerned authorities to make informed decision on optimal ways of controlling hAT in National Parks. The results show that much control efforts have so far concentrated in serengeti, Ruaha, Tarangire and Katavi National Parks where tsetse fly challenges are high. A total 21,143 (average 3020) Insecticide Treated Targets (ITT) were deployed in different areas in the parks and 82,899 (average 20,725) cars entering these parks were sprayed from 2007/2008 to 2014/2015 and 2007/2008 to 2010/2011 respectively. Deployed ITTs lead to a drastic reduction of FTDs of the two dominant tsetse species to 1.3 and 1.4 of G. swynnertoni and G. pallidipes respectively, and the decline was significant at P = 0.011. The major challenges faced include tsetse re-invasion in controlled areas;resurgence of hAT cases when control efforts are relaxed, ITT maintenance and inadequate health education programs. The control strategy should be continuous and scaled up as failure to implement an effective and sustainable system for hAT control will increase the risk of new epidemic that would impede tourism development.

Central Neurocytoma and Epidermoid Tumor Occurring as Collision Tumors: A Rare Association

Different brain tumors of distinct histology can co-exist in the setting of phakomatoses or as a complication of radiotherapy. In the absence of these predisposing factors, this phenomenon is uncommon. When the lesions are in close proximity they are described as collision tumors and are extremely rare. A 58-year-old woman presented with persistent headache and cognitive decline for three months. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a tumor arising from the atrium of the left lateral ventricle with heterogeneous contrast enhancement. This intraventricular lesion was adjacent to another extensive infiltrating tumor of the basal cisterns. Operative findings revealed a vascular ventricular tumor and gross total resection was achieved. An adjacent avascular basal cistern tumor with a pearly white sheen was encountered and partial excision was performed. The histopathological diagnosis was central neurocytoma and epidermoid tumor. There is only one documented description of a central neurocytoma co-existing with a tumor of different pathology. To our knowledge, this is the first reported collision tumor case involving central neurocytoma. since the incidence of both lesions co-existing juxtaposed is extremely low, a chronic oncogenetic inflammatory process stimulated by the epidermoid tumor to the subventricular region is suggested. Other mechanisms for tumor collision are discussed and we suggest a classification system for this rare association to reflect their pathogenesis.

用系统分析的方法组建防治第二代欧洲玉米螟Ostrinia nubilalis(huboer)的动态模型。系统分为:玉米螟种群动态;玉米生育期与玉米螟之间的物候关系;玉米螟为害玉米后造成的产量损失;以及经济允许为害水平等四个亚系统。模型以田间第二代卵量增长逻辑蒂斯Logistic曲线为基质,并由全代单株累计幼虫密度,当代卵块及高龄幼虫落在某一玉米生育期的比率,各生育期受高龄幼虫为害后所造成的产量损失总和,以及防治效益与消费的比值等八条公式构成。利用这个程序模型,能系统分析玉米螟第二代的发生期、发生量、为害程度和损失,以及预测防治的经济价值,从而作出合理的防治决策。

Background: Few studies have often focused on medicinal plant mixtures, yet the most used in low-and middle-income areas as alternative drug to treat diseases. Objective: To evaluate the antidiabetic effects of Emilia coccinea (Ec) (Asteraceae), scoparia dulcis (sd) (Plantaginaceae) and Tetracarpidium conophorum (Tc) (Euphorbiaceae) aqueous extracts mixture (EcsdTc) in rats. Methodology: single plant aqueous extracts (Ec, sd and Tc) and their mixtures (Ecsd, EcTc, sdTc and EcsdTc) (each at the doses of 125 and 250 mg/kg body weight respectively) were evaluated in acute administration on blood glucose in normal, glucose-overloaded and diabetic rats;then EcsdTc mixture was assessed in prolonged administration (21 days) on blood glucose, body weight, serum biochemical and antioxidant parameters in diabetic rats. Diabetes was induced by single intraperitoneal administration of streptozotocin (sTZ;50 mg/kg), and glibenclamide (10 mg/kg) was used as standard drug. Results: In acute administration, EcTc250, EcsdTc125, sdTc250, sdTc125, Ecsd250, and EcsdTc250 extracts mixtures reduced (p Conclusion: EcsdTc aqueous extracts mixture has potent hypoglycemic and antidiabetic effects, probably due to their bioactive compounds synergistic and/or additive actions, justifying its traditional use as alternative remedies.

Objective:Amphotericin B (AMB),a potent antifungal agent,has been employed as topical and systemic therapy for sinonasal fungal infections.A novel formulation of nanodisc (ND) containing super aggregated AMB (ND-AMB) for the treatment of fungal infections has been recently developed to provide greater protection from AMB toxicity than current,clinically approved lipid-based *** objective of the current study was to evaluate the safety and potency of ND-AMB for sinonasal delivery using an in vitro ***:human sinonasal tissue was harvested during endoscopic sinus surgery and grown at air-liquid interface until *** were exposed to ND-AMB vs AMB and changes in K+ permeability and resistance were measured and recorded via Ussing chamber *** beat frequency (CBF) was analyzed in parallel as well as cytotoxic *** was assessed using real-time PCR measurement of the Aspergillus fumigatus 18s ***:Ussing chamber studies revealed K+ currents that increased rapidly within 30 s of adding AMB (10 μg/mL) to the apical side,indicating apical membranes had become permeable to K+ *** contrast,negligible induction of K+ current was obtained following addition of NDAMB [AMB =(107.7 ± 15.9) μA/cm2 AMB vs ND-AMB =(2.3 ± 0.7) μA/cm2 ND-AMB;P =0.005].ND-AMB also protected nasal epithelial cells from cytotoxicity of AMB (P ＜ 0.05).There was no difference in ciliary beat frequency between the two groups (P =0.96).The expression of *** 18s rRNA with exposure of lower dose of ND-AMB was significantly lower compared to that with AMB (P ＜ 0.05).Conclusions:Data from the present study suggests ND-AMB protects human nasal epithelia membranes from AMB toxicity by protecting against apical cell K+ permeability while maintaining uncompromised antifungal property compared to ***-AMB could provide a novel topical therapy for sinonasal fungal diseases.
