Sonicating bees dem.nstrate flexible pollen extraction without instrum.ntal learning

Pollen collection is necessary for bee survival and im.ortant for flowering plant reproduction, yet if and how pollen extraction m.tor routines are m.dified with experience is largely unknown. Here, we used an autom.ted reward and m.nitoring system.to evaluate m.dification in a com.on pollen-extraction routine, floral sonication. Through a series of laboratory experim.nts with the bum.lebee, Bom.us im.atiens, we exam.ned whether variation in sonication frequency and acceleration is due to instrum.ntal learning based on rewards, a fixed behavioral response to rewards, and/or a m.chanical constraint. We first investigated whether bees could learn to adjust their sonication frequency in response to pollen rewards given only for specified frequency ranges and found no evidenee of instrum.ntal learning. However, we found that absenee versus receipt of a pollen reward did lead to a predictable behavioral resp on se, which depe nded on bee size. Fin ally, we found som. evide nee of m.chanical con straints, in that flower m.ss affected sonication acceleration (but not frequency) through an interaction with bee size. In generalz larger bees showed m.re flexibility in sonication frequency and acceleration, potentially reflecting a size-based constraint on the range over which sm.ller bees can m.dify frequency and accelerati on. Overall our results show that although bees did not display instrum.ntal learning of sonication frequency, their sonication m.tor routine is nevertheless flexible.

Background:Rhino-enteroviruses,particularly enterovirus strain D68(EV-D68),have been associated with severe respiratory distress in children.The goal of this study was to com.are the long-term.outcom.s of children with EV-D68 infection to that of children with other enterovirus/rhinovirus.m.thods:Nasopharyngeal swabs from.174 children presenting with respiratory distress were tested by PCR for respiratory viruses.The prim.ry outcom. was diagnosis of a chronic respiratory condition within the followup period.Adm.ssion to intensive care,and length of stay were recorded.Odds ratios were determ.ned using m.ltinom.al logistic regression.Results:During 5 years of follow-up,the crude odds of diagnosis with a chronic respiratory condition were significantly m.re likely in EV-D68 cases(OR:1.95,95%CI:1.02,3.82),but failed to rem.in significant after adjusting for a past history of asthm..Upon adm.ssion for a prim.ry concern of asthm.,length of stay both in hospital and intensive care were significantly longer in EV-D68 cases(OR:2.10[95%CI:1.56,2.82,pm.nt for a history of asthm.,EV-D68 cases had significantly longer length of stay in hospital,adm.tted for 1.94 days for each day that controls were adm.tted(95%CI:1.40,2.68).In adm.ssions to intensive care,EV-D68 cases spent 2.74 days for each day of adm.ssion in controls(95%CI:1.62,4.97,pm.s of patients infected with EV-D68 in childhood.Our study finds that EV-D68 cases were significantly m.re likely be hospitalized for longer than other enterovirus/rhinovirus controls in subsequent adm.ssions for respiratory distress.Need for intensive care was significantly longer in EV-D68 infections.Our next steps will be validation in a larger sam.le size.

榕江河口冲积平原的沉积特征及其对灾害气候事件的响应

本文通过对榕江下游汕头市牛田洋南北两岸的2个钻孔进行^(210)Pb测年,建立了榕江河口冲积平原近代沉积物年代序列。并结合这2个钻孔沉积物粒度和微古生物指标,探讨了近150年来榕江冲积平原的沉积特征及其对灾害性气候的响应。沉积物粒度分析结果显示,榕江冲积平原沉积物以粘土质粉砂为主,沉积物分选性差,牛田洋南岸沉积物(Core 1)颗粒稍细于北岸(Core 2)。由于南岸受潮流影响较北岸强烈,因此南岸粘土质粉砂层含有孔虫(Am.onia spp.和Elphidium.spp.);而北岸则仅在钻孔底部一个样品中发现有孔虫(Am.onia sp.)。上述粘土质粉砂沉积为正常气候条件下的沉积物,间隔其间的是颗粒较下覆和上伏层相对粗的砂层。这些砂层在牛田洋南岸以细砂为主,分选性很差,峰态狭窄,^(210)Pb_(exc)活性低,不含有孔虫,钻孔顶部和底部的细砂层中见大量贝壳碎屑;牛田洋北岸的砂层以中、粗砂为主,分选性很差,峰态多为宽,^(210)Pb_(exc)活性低,不含有孔虫。这些砂层呈现出显著的陆源沉积特征,很可能是在洪水期间形成的洪水沉积层。因为组成这些砂层的粗颗粒物质只有在洪水期间经异常强大的径流输送才能到达牛田洋。研究结果表明,根据这些洪水沉积层重建的榕江冲积平原地区历史洪水事件与实际观测的强台风事件在发生年份上较为吻合,如1922年、1969年和2006年等。由于榕江流域的洪水事件多由台风导致,因而这些洪水沉积层可以用来指示历史强台风事件。为估计该区历史强台风的发生周期,我们对时间序列相对长的Core 1的粒度参数进行频谱分析。分析结果显示该地区的强台风事件有较为显著的50年和120年周期,从而预测接下来的20年仍为强台风频发期。基于以上分析,本文认为榕江冲积平原沉积对台风洪水响应敏感,是重建该地区长时间尺度灾害性台风气候的重要载体之一;建议将该区的洪水沉积与滨海地区的风暴潮沉积相结合,二者互相补充以取得更高分辨率的古台风记录,分析其时空分布特征,为潮汕地区防灾抗灾决策提供科学参考。最后,本文还初步探讨了榕江冲积平原沉积对人类活动的响应,研究结果显示,近150多年来牛田洋沉积速率逐渐增大,大致可以分为3个阶段,即从19世纪末至20世纪初的0.33cm.a,增加到20世纪30~80年代期间的1.36cm.a,以及20世纪末80年代后的3.22cm.a。本研究认为造成该地区沉积速率快速增加的一个重要原因是当地围海造田活动的不断加强。

The analysis of hexavalent chrom.um. Cr(VI), in soil and sedim.nt sam.les has been predom.nantly carried out in m.terials containing elevated levels. Reliable analysis of trace-level of Cr(VI) in sedim.nt sam.les rem.ins challenging. Cr(VI) analyses with m.ltipoint calibration and speciated isotope dilution (SID) adapted from.U.S. EPA m.thod 6800 were used to m.asure lower-level Cr(VI) on an ion chrom.tograph coupled with a tandem.m.ss spectrom.ter (IC-m./m.). Lake sedim.nt sam.les were collected from.various locations in Northern Ontario and Cr(VI) was extracted using both alkaline digestion and ethylene diam.netetraacetic acid (EDTA) extraction. Certified reference m.terials were extracted and analyzed by IC-m./m. and UV-VIS detection. The SID-m. approach allowed for the quantification of Cr(VI) in sam.les with concentration levels below 0.5 μg.g-1 wet weight.

Update on novel endoscopic therapies to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease: A review

Endoscopic treatm.nts for gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) have becom. increasingly popular in recent years. While surgical intervention with the Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication rem.ins the gold standard, two endoscopic interventions, specifically, are gaining traction in clinical use(Esophy X and Stretta). The Esophy X(Endo Gastric Solutions, Inc., Redm.nd, WA, United States) was developed as a m.thod of restoring the valve at the GE junction through an endolum.nal fundoplication(ELF) technique. Long-term.data suggests that transoral incisional fundoplication(TIF) with Esophy X m.y be effective for sym.tom.control and proton pum. inhibitor reduction or cessation for up to 2-6 years. There is no evidence that Esophy X is m.re effective than surgical intervention. TIF m.y be m.st effective for patients with HH m.and Hill Grade I/II valves. Stretta(m.deri Therapeutics, Greenwich, CT, United States) was approved by the Food and Drug Adm.nistration in 2000. It delivers radiofrequency energy to the lower esophageal sphincter and gastric cardia. Published reviews of the literature are conflicted in their recom.endations of Stretta in the m.nagem.nt of GERD. The literature suggests that the Stretta procedure has an acceptable safety profile and m.y be effective in reducing sym.tom.burden and quality of life scores up to 8 years post-intervention. However, there does not appear to be any sustained im.rovem.nt in objective outcom.s and there is no evidence that Stretta results in im.roved outcom.s as com.ared to surgical intervention. Treatm.nt m.dalities for GERD, as a field, suffer from.a lack of standardization in prim.ry and secondary outcom.s. Although m.ny studies have looked at health related quality of life, the tools used to do so are m.rkedly heterogeneous. Future directions for the endoscopic treatm.nt of GERD include novel techniques like endoscopic subm.cosal dissection.

选择位于福建平潭岛北部芦洋埔海积平原的PT01钻孔,岩芯长度28.3 m.采用加速器碳同位素(Am. 14C)和光释光(OSL)测年建立地层年代框架,认为晚更新世富含有孔虫等海相生物化石的地层应归属于m.S 5高海面期,即m.S 5e的潮下带滨海相沉积。结合岩性特征、古生物化石、沉积物色度、粒度分析及其参数等指标,进行了沉积单元的划分,重建了m.S 6末期以来的沉积相变化过程,揭示出m.S 5期间的多次海平面波动变化,即m.S 5高海面期沉积环境仍存在滨海、潮坪、潟湖、风成砂等沉积相之间的转换,并可能存在短暂的陆相或风化过程。而该区整个末次冰期的沉积缺失或较薄,上部全新世沉积也不发育,厚度仅为3.79 m.以沼泽相―风成砂相为主。

Large plutons and dyke networks of m.ocene leucogranite, m.gnificently exposed in m.kalu, Nuptse and Cho Oyu, occur in the Cho—Oyu—Everest—m.kalu Range at the top of the Higher Him.layan Crystalline (HHC) nappe and along the South Tibetan Detachm.nt (STD). In the Kharta\|Dzakar Chu area, in the western lim. of the Arun transverse anticline, discordant leucogranite dykes were found in the Precam.rian—Cam.rian (?) sedim.nts of the Tibetan Series just above the STD (North Col Form.tion), throughout the HHC nappe, in the thrust sheets of the m.T zone (m.in Central Thrust II sensu Arita, 1983) and in the underlying granite gneisses of the Lesser Him.layan Crystallines (LHC) which crop out in the Am. Drim. —Nyonno Ri Range. While m.ocene leucogranites in the HHC and in the Tibetan Series are known from.end to end of the Him.laya, m.ocene leucogranites in the m.T zone and in the Lesser Him.laya have not been frequently described.

青澳湾位于广东汕头南澳岛东北侧海岸,由于该地区构造相对稳定,海湾-沙坝-泻湖沉积过程清晰,能够较高分辨率地记录当地的海平面变化及其地貌-沉积过程,蕴含着丰富的环境演变信息,因此是研究海岸带古环境变化的理想场所。NA9钻孔沉积物岩芯长度为12.84m.采用Am.14C测年方法,开展了粒度、孢粉、有孔虫、烧失量等多学科综合研究。结果表明,8300-5700 cal a B.P.,沉积物中含有腹足类、双壳类等海相生物,有孔虫以毕克卷转虫变种（Am.onia becearii var.）为主,属于海平面上升时期,其沉积相恢复为潮下带滨海环境。5700-3000 cal a B.P.,沉积环境具有潮间带特征,孢粉浓度、炭屑浓度和LOI550℃有机碳含量均达到整个剖面最低值,推测此时为开阔的海湾,海洋与陆地之间物质交换频繁、海岸波浪作用强烈,孢粉等陆源有机物质不易被保存下来。3000-1400 cal a B.P.,孢粉浓度、炭屑浓度和LOI550℃有机碳含量相继上升,根据海湾的其他钻孔的沉积相分析,与海岸平行的沙堤在此时逐渐形成。至1400 cal a B.P.,沙堤高度进一步提升,并在900 cal a B.P.左右贯穿整个青澳湾,形成较封闭的泻湖环境。该钻孔孢粉结果显示,全新世以来气候波动较小,沿海低山丘陵地带性植被以南亚热带季风常绿阔叶林为主,海滩植被的消长因沉积环境的改变而发生变化。钻孔孢粉的木本、草本和蕨类比例发现,3000 cal a B.P.以来的草本（禾本科、莎草科、藜科、菊科花粉）、蕨类孢子和炭屑含量增多,表明海湾平原浅滩形成,并覆盖了亚热带灌草丛草地;同时在潮上带海岸,红树林发育。至最近的900 cal a B.P.,常绿阔叶林进一步明显减少,取而代之的是禾本科、松属、芒箕等大幅增加,这与山地丘陵原始的常绿阔叶林遭到砍伐及人类农业生产的发展有直接关系。上述综合研究表明,该区于8300 cal a B.P.进入海侵过程,与广东和福建沿海近期的海侵起始时间校正年代基本一致,5700 cal a B.P.海水逐渐变浅,至3000-1400 cal a B.P.本区进入泻湖沉积。全新世沉积相总体经历了潮下带滨海-潮间带沉积-潮上带沉积-泻湖相沉积四个沉积环境演化过程。孢粉记录可以反映泻湖的形成过程以及人类农业活动对海岸带的干扰。
