BACKGROUND Breast milk is the primary source of nutrition for *** babies frequently need nutritional support from Human Milk *** bacterial species of the genus Enterococcus are part of the microbiota of healthy donors,they may contaminate samples of pumped breast *** To identify and characterize the bacterial virulence and resistance in samples isolated from the nipple-areolar region,hands,and breast milk aliquots from donors at the Human Milk Bank of Municipal Hospital EsauMatos in the city of Vitória da Conquista,Bahia State,*** The personal hygiene and sanitation of donors were analyzed with the aim of identifying possible reasons for contamination of pumped *** samples as well as aliquots of unpasteurized and pasteurized milk from 30 participants were *** Enterococcus *** underwent a disk diffusion susceptibility test and molecular biology techniques to determine resistance and virulence *** Enterococcus *** identified in 30%of donors(n=9),and 11 specimens were *** to tetracycline was highly prevalent,being detectable in 63%of the isolates(n=7)and followed by intermediate sensitivity to ciprofloxacin,observed in 27%of the specimens(n=3).The efaA gene was found in 63%(n=7)of the isolates,while the ace gene was detected in 27%(n=3).CONCLUSION This study illustrates the importance of microbiological monitoring by Human Milk Banks and the need for alternatives to prevent the presence of Enterococcus *** hospital settings.

Prevalence and factors associated with non-adherence to therapy among partners of pregnant women with syphilis in a city of northeastern Brazil

BACKGROUND One of the main difficulties faced in the prevention of the vertical transmission of syphilis is the inadequate treatment of pregnant women and their *** disease causes serious repercussions in infected *** To evaluate the prevalence and factors associated with the therapeutic adhesion among partners of pregnant women with syphilis in a county in Northeastern *** This is a descriptive,analytic,quantitative,cross-sectional study that was carried out through interviews with 46 pregnant women diagnosed with syphilis between 2017 and 2018 as well as with their *** interviews aimed at collecting data regarding sociodemographic characteristics,obstetric variables and information about syphilis,and partners’related *** Our results showed that 73.91%of the partners did not undergo appropriate treatments,and obtaining negative results in syphilis tests was the main reason for the absence of *** following factors were significantly associated with the lack of treatment among partners:Being a partner that is not the current mate of the pregnant woman,having a level of schooling inferior to 8 years[oddsratio(OR)=10.28],and the pregnant woman undergoing up to two syphilis tests during the prenatal care(OR=8.6).The study found a higher odds of absent treatment among partners if the pregnant woman is not white(OR=13.88)or if the partner has less than 8 years of schooling(OR=21.00)or has a monthly income of less than half the minimum wage(OR=13.93).CONCLUSION The findings of this study show a high prevalence of partners that are not adequately treated for syphilis,a phenomenon that is strongly associated with socioeconomic factors.

BACKGROUNDG roup B Streptococcus agalactiae (GBS) is the main etiologic agent associated withearly-onset neonatal sepsis, and of all newborns of parturients colonized by GBS,approximately 1%-2% develop invasive, early-onset disease. The risk of infectionincreases to 15.2% in premature neonates, to 10.7% when the parturient haschorioamnionitis or premature rupture of membranes for more than 24 h and to9.7% if the mother has postpartum bacteremia. In addition to causing perinatal,neonatal and postnatal deaths, neonatal hospital infection is associated with highcosts, as hospitalization is three times longer than in uninfected children. Yerba mate (Ilex paraguariensis) is an indigenous crop which is highly consumed as an infusion in the South American subtropical forest. It has a high concentration of antioxidant substances, providing health benefits and helping to prevent diseases. The objectives of this work were to characterize an aqueous yerba mate extract by spectrophotometric and chromatographic (HPLC) methods and to study the effect of the freeze-drying process on the polyphenols profile and antioxidant activity, determined by a novel method. An aqueous extract was obtained and lyophilized to obtain a yerba mate powder with antioxidant properties. The extracts showed a high polyphenol content, determined by Folin-Ciocalteau and HPLC, and a high antioxidant activity towards the DPPH· radical and after the recently developed method of photochemiluminescence. A linear correlation was found between Folin-Ciocalteau and DPPH methods for lyophilized samples. HPLC analysis allowed determining antioxidant components like rutin, caffeine and chlorogenic acid. Lyophilization caused a decrease in total polyphenol content and antiradical activity of the extracts and this fact was mainly attributed to changes in the chlorogenic acid related compounds and rutin structures, after their photochemiluminescence data. The photoluminiscent method proves to be an advantageous approach for antioxidant capacity determination.
