Obesity and type 2 diabetes are among the most important risk factors for severe coronavirus disease-19. Some studies have suggested that the use of insulin as a therapeutic agent to treat hyperglycemia and the metabolic abnormalities associated with type 2 diabetes during the acute phase of severe coronavirus disease-19 could have a negative impact on the disease’s progression;however, there is no consensus on this issue. Here, we performed a systematic review in an attempt to answer this important question. We included 29 articles published from December 2019 to August 2023, which reported the outcomes of 3,070,657 patients with severe coronavirus disease-19 that had the diagnosis of diabetes and were treated with either insulin or other glucose-reducing agents. The results show that using insulin as a pharmacological intervention to treat type 2 diabetes in patients with severe coronavirus disease-19 increases the likelihood of mortality by 193%.

Cacao is a crop of global relevance that faces constant demands for improved bean ***,little is known about the genomic regions controlling the crop yield and genes involved in cacao bean ***,to identify the quantitative trait loci(QTL)associated with cacao yield and bean filling,we performed a QTL mapping in a segregating mapping population comprising 459 trees of a cross between‘TSH 1188’and‘CCN 51’.All variables showed considerable phenotypic variation and had moderate to high heritability *** identified 24 QTLs using a genetic linkage map that contains 3526 single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)*** analysis at the significant QTL region on chromosome IV pointed to the alleles from the maternal parent,‘TSH 1188’,as the ones that affect the cacao yield components the *** recombination events identified within these QTL regions allowed us to identify candidate genes that may take part in the different steps of pod growth and bean *** candidate genes seem to play a significant role in the source-to-sink transport of sugars and amino acids,and lipid metabolism,such as fatty acid *** SNP markers mapped in our study are now being used to select potential highyielding cacao varieties through marker-assisted selection in our existing cacao-breeding experiments.

Modeling an Oil Spill along the Southern Brazilian Shelf: forcing Characterization and Its Influence on the Oil fate

Oil spills can generate multiple effects in different time scales on the marine ecosystem. The numerical modeling of these processes is an important tool with low computational cost which provides a powerful appliance to environmental agencies regarding the risk management. In this way, the objective of this work is to evaluate the influence of a number of physical forcing acting over a hypothetical oil spill along the Southern Brazilian Shelf. The numerical simulation was carried out using the ECOS model (Easy Coupling Oil System), an oil spill model developed at the Universidade federal do Rio Grande—fURG, coupled with the tridimensional hydrodynamic model TELEMAC3D (EDf, france). The hydrodynamic model provides the current velocity, salinity and temperature fields used by the oil spill model to evaluate the behavior and the fate of the spilled oil. The results suggest that the local wind influence is the main forcing driven the fate of the spilled oil, and this forcing responds for more than 60% of the oil slick variability. The direction and intensity of the costal currents control between 20% and 40% of the oil variability, and the currents are important controlling the behavior and the tridimensional transportation of the oil. On the other hand, the turbulent diffusion is important for the horizontal drift of the oil. The weathering results indicate 40% of evaporation and 80% of emulsification, and the combination of these processes leads an increasing of the oil density around, 53.4 kg/m3 after 5 days of simulation.

Purpose The aims of this study were to propose an alternative method to assess an optimal performance improvement rate(PIR)that would be used as a tool for coaches and elite athletes willing to reach their personal best,mainly those seeking for national,continental or even world record(WR)in middle-distance *** further compared the improvement rate of women *** of the top-10 ranked athletes in the IAAf running these middle-distance events Method The top 10 athletes in the IAAf ranking of 800 m,1500 m,and 3000 m events for each sex were assessed for their history of race times before achieving their personal record(PR).The difference between PR(‘actual’season)and the best race time in the last season was defined as the 1st season improvement rate(1-SIR),whereas the average improvement rate in the last and preceding seasons was the multi-season improvement rate(M-SIR).1-SIR and M-SIR were calculated for each *** There were sex differences in the 1500 m with a large effect size(d=−0.746)in 1-SIR(P=0.001)and very large(d=−2.249)in M-SIR(P=0.001).Women improved more than men before the PR/WR achievements in the 800 m and 1500 m events(P=0.001)and had similar improvement rates before performing PR/WR in 3000 m events(P=0.533).Conclusion Women improve more before PR/WR achievement in 800 m and 1500 m ***,in the 3000 m men and women have similar improvement rates in previous seasons before the PR/WR achievement.

Micro-computed tomography can be applied for the assessment of the micro-architectural characteristics of the cortical and trabecular bones in either physiological or disease conditions. However, reports often lack a detailed description of the methodological steps used to analyse these images, such as the volumes of interest, the algorithms used for image filtration, the approach used for image segmentation, and the bone parameters quantified, thereby making it difficult to compare or reproduce the studies. This study addresses this critical need and aims to provide standardized assessment and consistent parameter reporting related to quantitative jawbone image analysis. Various regions of the rat jawbones were screened for their potential for standardized micro-computed tomography analysis. furthermore, the volumes of interest that were anticipated to be most susceptible to bone structural changes in response to experimental interventions were defined. In the mandible, two volumes of interest were selected, namely, the condyle and the trabecular bone surrounding the three molars. In the maxilla, the maxillary tuberosity region and the inter-radicular septum of the second molar were considered as volumes of interest. The presented protocol provides a standardized and reproducible methodology for the analysis of relevant jawbone volumes of interest and is intended to ensure global, accurate, and consistent reporting of its morphometry. furthermore, the proposed methodology has potential, as a variety of rodent animal models would benefit from its implementation.
