Crop residues: applications of lignocellulosic biomass in the context of a biorefinery

Interest in lignocellulosic biomass conversion technologies has increased recently because of their potential to reduce the dependency on non-renewable feedstocks. Residues from a variety of crops are the major source of lignocellulose, which is being produced in increasingly large quantities worldwide. The commercial exploitation of crop residues as feedstocks for biorefineries which could be used to produce a variety of goods such as biofuels, biochemicals, bioplastics, and enzymes is an attractive approach not only for adding value to residues but also for providing renewable products required by the expanding bioeconomy market. Moreover, the implementation of biorefineries in different regions has the potential to add value to the specific crop residues produced in the region. In this review, several aspects of crop residue application in biorefineries are discussed, including the role of crop residues in the bioeconomy and circular economy concepts, the main technical aspects of crop residue conversion in biorefineries, the main crop residues generated in different regions of the world and their availability, the potential value-added bioproducts that can be extracted or produced from each crop residue, and the major advantages and challenges associated with crop residue utilization in biorefineries. despite their potential, most biomass refining technologies are not sufficiently advanced or financially viable. Several technical obstacles, especially with regard to crop residue collection, handling, and pre-treatment, prevent the implementation of biorefineries on a commercial scale. Further research is needed to resolve these scale-up-related challenges. Increased governmental incentives and bioeconomic strategies are expected to boost the biorefinery market and the cost competitiveness of biorefinery products.

Zeyheria tuberculosa(Vell.)Bureau ex Verl.is among the Brazilian flora threatened with extinction.It has high-quality wood and can be used to recover herbicidecontaminated areas.However,abiotic stresses can harm seed germination and seedling development under adverse conditions and need to be understood to improve autochthonous or indigenous biodiversity conservation and strengthen reforestation projects.This study evaluated the effects of temperature,water and saline stress on Z.tuberculosa seed germination and water stress on seedling growth.Three laboratory experiments evaluated germination under:(1)different temperatures(20,25,30,35 and 40℃);(2)different water potentials simulated with polyethylene glycol(PEG6000)at 25 and 30℃;and,(3)different osmotic potentials simulated with NaCl at 25 and 30℃.In addition,a greenhouse experiment subjected seedlings to five water regimes(20%,35%,50%,65%and 80%of maximum substrate water holding capacity).In the laboratory,seedling biometry and germination were evaluated,while physiological and morphological parameters were assessed in the greenhouse.Physiological potential of seeds increased at 25 and 30℃.Germination and vigor decreased as water and saline stresses increased.Germination tolerance thresholds for water and salt stresses were-0.6 and-0.4 MPa,respectively.In the greenhouse,the most restrictive water regimes reduced seedling physiological and morphological parameters.Seedling development was compromised at moisture levels below50%field capacity.

Objectives:Foodborne disease outbreaks linked to fruits and vegetables have been increasing in occurrence worldwide;therefore,the aim of this study was to identify the reported foodborne outbreaks associated with fruit and vegetable consumption in Brazil from 2008 to 2014.Results And Limitations:Thirty produce related outbreaks resulted in 2926 illnesses,347 hospitalizations,and no deaths.Only bacterial pathogens were identified as etiological agents.Among these,Salmonella was the most frequent(30 per cent of outbreaks)followed by Staphylococcus aureus(23.3 per cent),Escherichia coli(10 per cent),Bacillus cereus(6.6 per cent),and thermotolerant coliforms(3.3 per cent),whereas etiological agents could not be determined for 26.6 per cent of outbreaks.The most common food vehicles implicated in outbreaks were generically named as fruits and vegetables(46.6 per cent of outbreaks).The term salad was used generically and specifically like salads(two outbreaks),raw/cooked salads(four outbreaks),vegetable salad,tropical salad,Caesar salad,and raw salad of cabbage and tomato.Only one outbreak was related exclusively to fruit(fruit pulp),whereas other outbreaks were related to cooked carrot,lettuce,cucumber,watermelon/cabbage,and chard/beet.Contamination sources and issues related to the future control of produce-related foodborne disease outbreaks are discussed.

The debates among CAM practitioners about the quality and execution of scientific research are important, Therefore, the aim of this review is to gather, synthesize and describe the differentiated methodological models that encompass the complexity of therapeutic interventions. The process of bringing evidence-based medicine into clinical practice in CAM is essential for the growth and strengthening of complementary medicines worldwide.

Purpose: To verify evidence of subclinical alterations through self-reported participation restrictions in normal hearing individuals and congenital hypothyroidism patients.Methods: An analytical, quantitative, cross-sectional exploratory study with a 1:1 ratio, consisting of a convenience sample of 86 normal hearing individuals with(n = 42) and without(n = 44) congenital hypothyroidism diagnosis. All participants underwent tonal and speech audiometry, immitance and distortion product otoacoustic emissions. The researchers excluded people with hearing loss, genetic syndromes and metabolic diseases. The instrument used for evaluate of self-reported participation restrictions was the HHIE-adapted questionnaire, composed of 25 questions, 12 of which were social domain and 13 emotional domain. Student's ttest and chi-square test were used for statistical analysis at a significance level of 5%.Results: There was a significant(p derate(40.5%)and higher prevalence of association with clinical factors and adherence to treatment.Conclusion: The findings indicate that self-reported participation restrictions in normal hearing individuals with congenital hypothyroidism was more significant than in the non-exposed group, suggesting evidence of subclinical auditory abnormalities in this population.

Melting behavior and globular microstructure formation in semi-solid CoCrCuxFeNi high-entropy alloys

High-entropy alloys can be compelling raw materials for semi-solid applications.In the present study,the influence of the Cu content on the melting behavior and semi-solid microstructure of CoCrCuxFeNi(x=0,1,2,3)alloys was investigated.Arc-melted samples were cross-rolled at room temperature and then isothermally treated at 1175℃in the semi-solid state for 300 s.Microstructural characterization showed that the alloys containing Cu were formed by two fcc phases.Notably,the increase in Cu content also led to an increase in the volumetric fraction of the Cu-rich phase.During solidification,this phase,which is the last to form,nucleates and epitaxially grows on the Cu-lean phase.All the studied CoCrCuFeNi alloys exhibited the same melting behavior.The Cu-rich phase melts at approximately 1120℃,whereas the Culean phase melts at approximately 1350℃,providing a suitable processing temperature range of more than 200℃.The semi-solid microstructures were considerably refined and globular regardless of the alloy composition,being suitable for semi-solid processing.Furthermore,each fcc phase exhibited roughly the same composition under the different processing conditions.The Cu content in the Cu-lean phase was approximately 10 at.%,while Co,Cr,Fe,and Ni were in an approximately equiatomic ratio.Meanwhile,the Cu content was between 80 at.%and 86 at.%in the Cu-rich phase.The isothermal treatment of the CoCrCu3FeNi alloy at a higher temperature(1300℃)only caused the globules to coarsen.In conclusion,this work showed that these alloys can be potential candidates for semi-solid processing.

Aim:To evaluate the hearing of children with congenital hypothyroidism(CH)and to analyze the knowledge that parents’have on the possible auditory impacts of the disease.Methods:A total of 263 parents/guardians were interviewed about aspects of CH and hearing.Audiological evaluation was performed on 80 participants,divided into two groups:with CH(n?50)and without CH(n紏30).Clinical and laboratory CH data were obtained from medical records,pure tone auditory thresholds and acoustic reflexes were analyzed.The auditory data was compared between groups.Student’s t-test and Chi-square were used for statistical analysis at a significance level of 5%(p0,05;p=0.026).There was a statistically significant difference between the auditory tone thresholds of the groups and between the levels of intensity necessary for the triggering of the acoustic reflex.The group with CH presented the worst results(pdevelop damage to the auditory system involving retrocochlear structures when compared to healthy children,and that the disease may have been a risk factor for functional deficits without deteriorating hearing sensitivity.The possible impacts of CH on hearing,when not treated early,should be more publicized among the parents/guardians of this population.

This research investigates the soil conditioning effect of sugar cane fields with biochar produced from sugarcane bagasse.Its influence on the physicochemical and microbiological conditions of the soil and the agronomic performance of sugarcane seedlings was verified.To this end,the biochar from sugarcane bagasse was produced by pyrolysis in a double drum oven and mixed with soil at rates of 0,1%,3%,and 5%(in weight).The experiment was installed in a greenhouse with two evaluation periods(30 days and 60 days)and five replicates.Each pot received a pre-sprouted cane seedling,and the analysis of colony-forming units(bacteria and fungi),physicochemical characteristics of the soil,and growth and development of sugarcane were performed per pot.The biochar showed a high fixed carbon content(72%)and a specific surface area estimated by the adsorption of methylene blue of 50 m2 g−1.Furthermore,its structure is porous and contains important nutrients(e.g.,CaO,K2O,and P2O5).In the periods evaluated,the applications of the 3%and 5%(in weight)rates of biochar reduced most of the soil fertility parameters.However,the chemical analyses indicated that the sugarcane field soil collected already possessed high fertility.The microbiota was influenced,but only the application of the 3%(in weight)rate at 60 days after planting showed a significant positive effect on the number of bacteria forming units,with an increase of approximately 385%.On the other hand,no significant positive effect on sugarcane development was found.Therefore,biochar application in high-fertility sugarcane plantation soil did not result in gains for sugarcane development in the periods evaluated.

The clothing industry is considered one of the most polluting industries on the planet due to the high consumption of water,energy,chemicals/dyes,and high generation of solid waste and effluents.Faced with environmental concerns,the textile ennoblement sector is the most critical of the textile production chain,especially the traditional dyeing processes.As an alternative to current problems,dyeing with supercritical CO_(2)(scCO_(2))has been presented as a clean and efficient process for a sustainable textile future.Supercritical fluid dyeing(SFD)has shown a growing interest due to its significant impact on environmental preservation and social,economic,and financial gains.The main SFD benefits include economy and reuse of non-adsorbed dyes;reduction of process time and energy expenditure;capture of atmospheric CO_(2)(greenhouse gas);use and recycling of CO_(2)in SFD;generation of carbon credits;water-free process;effluent-free process;reduction of CO_(2)emission and auxiliary chemicals.despite being still a non-scalable and evolving technology,SFD is the future of dyeing.This review presented a comprehensive overview of the environmental impacts caused by traditional processes and confronted the advantages of SFD.The SFD technique was introduced,along with its latest advances and future perspectives.Financial and environmental gains were also discussed.
