Increase of beta-amyloid and C-reactive protein in liver transplant recipients with postoperative cognitive dysfunction

BACKGROUND: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is an adverse condition characterized by declined cognitive functions following surgeries and anesthesia. POCD has been associated with increased hospital stay and mortality. There are histological similarities to Alzheimer’s disease. Most early studies were conducted in patients receiving cardiac surgery. Since there is no information about POCD in liver transplant recipients, we measured the incidence of POCD in patients after liver transplantation and examined the correlation between neurological dysfunction and biological markers of dementia- based diseases. METHODS: We studied 25 patients who had a liver transplan- tation between July 2008 and February 2009. Patients with prior encephalopathy or risk factors associated with the development of POCD were excluded from the study. Five validated neuropsychiatric tests were used for diagnosis. The diagnosis was based on one standard deviation decline in two of the five neuropsychiatric tests. The correlation between patient variables and the development of POCD was examined. Serum levels of beta-amyloid and C-reactive protein were measured by standard EliSA and compared between patients with and without POCD. RESULTS: POCD was present in 11 (44%) of the 25 patients. Patients with POCD had significantly higher MELD scores, were more often Child-Pugh class C and received more blood transfusion during surgery. The serum beta-amyloid protein and C-reactive protein concentrations were significantly increased at 24 hours after surgery in the POCD ***: The incidence of POCD in our group of liver transplant patients was greater than that reported in other surgical patients. The increase in the serum biomarkers of dementia in the POCD patients supports the hypothesis that chronic cognitive defects are due to a process similar to that seen in Alzheimer’s disease.

Definition of fine roots on the basis of the root anatomy, diameter,and branch orders of one-year old Fraxinus mandshurica seedlings

Fine roots are important in root absorption of nutrient and water,and in root *** definition of fine roots is a prerequisite to improved estimation of the physiological and ecological functions of forest *** development and physiological functions are reflections of root anatomical *** this study,the anatomical structures of different root orders were analyzed by examining paraffin sections of one-year old Fraxinus mandshurica ***-year-old *** seedlings had over five root *** root anatomical structures of all orders showed more *** and second order roots consisted of four sections： the epidermis,cortex,pericycle,and vascular *** and fifth order roots were mainly composed of the skin and peripheral vascular bundles（including the xylem and phloem）.Third order roots had root epidermal and cortical structures,but the quantity and integrity of the cortical cells were inferior to those of the first and second order roots,and superior to those of the fourth and fifth order *** the first and second order roots and some third order roots with discontinuous cork layer（〈0.4 mm in diameter）,but not the fourth and fifth order roots,were the fine roots of one-year old *** *** they had similar diameters,different portions of root systems had different anatomical structures and therefore,vary in capacity to absorb water and *** roots were accurately defined by root diameter,branch orders,and anatomical structural features of one-year old *** seedlings.

The properties of a large volume-limited sample of face-on low surface brightness disk galaxies

We select a large volume-limited sample of low surface brightness galax- ies （LSBGs, 2021） to investigate in detail their statistical properties and their dif- ferences from high surface brightness galaxies （HSBGs, 3639）. The distributions of stellar masses of LSBGs and HSBGs are nearly the same and they have the same me- dian values. Thus this volume-limited sample has good completeness and is further removed from the effect of stellar masses on their other properties when we compare LSBGs to HSBGs. We found that LSBGs tend to have lower stellar metallicities and lower effective dust attenuations, indicating that they have lower dust than HSBGs. The LSBGs have relatively higher stellar mass-to-light ratios, higher gas fractions, lower star forming rates （SFRs）, and lower specific SFRs than HSBGs. Moreover, with the decreasing surface brightness, gas fraction increases, but the SFRs and spe- cific SFRs decrease rapidly for the sample galaxies. This could mean that the star formation histories between LSBGs and HSBGs are different, and HSBGs may have stronger star forming activities than LSBGs.

Temporal dynamics of nutrient balance, plasma biochemical and immune traits, and liver function in transition dairy cows

The objective of this study was to analyze the dynamics of nutrient balance,physiological biomarkers and comprehensive indexes associated with metabolism and function of organs in transition *** transition cows were used for this *** intake was recorded daily,and samples of the diet,venous blood and milk were collected for *** balance values of net energy for lactation(NEL),metabolizable protein(MP),and metabolizable glucose(MG) were calculated,and regression analysis and calculation of comprehensive indexes were ***,the prepartum cows presented positive balances of NEL,MP,and MG,while severe negative balances were found during the postpartum *** changes of energy metabolism,nutrient mobilization,liver function,anti-oxidative status and immune response,as indicated by blood biomarkers and modified comprehensive indexes,were out of sync with the calculated balance values,but they were closely related to the day relative to *** with the 21 d prepartum,the plasma concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids(NEFA) and β-hydroxybutyric acid(BHBA) were significantly increased around and after calving(Plied before calving,because metabolic adaptations had been validated during the prepartum *** addition,it was plausible to conclude that the decline of hepatic metabolism,defense function and insulin sensitivity are critical causes of metabolic dysfunction.

Physiological and Molecular Response of Wheat Roots to Nitrate Supply in Seedling Stage

The objective of this study was to understand the morphological,physiological,and molecular responses of wheat roots to nitrate supply at seedling *** wheat genotypes,Jimai 22 and Shannong 15,were grown in Hoagland＇s nutrient solution with different nitrate levels at seedling *** indicated that the plant dry weight and N accumulation increased with the increase of nitrate *** number of axial root,total uptake area （TUA）,and active uptake area （AUA） increased with more nitrate *** analysis indicated that significant positive correlations existed between N accumulation and dry weight,N accumulation and AUA,and N accumulation and AUA/***,the expressions of NRT2.1,NRT2.2,and NRT2.3 decreased with nitrate supply increased,the expressions of NRT1,NRT2.1,and NRT2.3 could maintain high level at N3 *** free amino acid and NO3- content in shoot also increased with the increased nitrate application,but no significant difference was found in root among the *** results implied that the increase of N uptake by nitrate supply was due to the morphological and physiological responses of wheat roots and the high expression level of TaNRT ***,the contribution of morphological,physiological,and molecular parameters was different between two genotypes of wheat.

Establishment and industrial practice of high-temperature process evaluation system in sintering

The behaviors of typical iron ores at high temperature were observed by confocal scanning laser microscopy. Four critical temperature points and liquid flow velocity at high temperatures of iron ores were obtained and the temperature points contain temperature at which sample starts to shrink, temperature at which the initial liquid phase forms, temperature at which a lot of liquid forms and temperature at which liquid consolidation ends. Under the same CaO to Fe203 ratio, the liquid phase fluidity of iron ore fines of Carajas （IOC） is good. However, under the same basicity, as the content of SiO2 in IOC is low, the liquid phase fluidity of IOC is much smaller than that of Yandi fine. After analysis of the initial formation and development of the liquid phase and the final consolidation process, the high-temperature process evaluation system （HTPES for short） of iron ore was established. The idea of ＂dense ore matching fusible ore＂ instead of ＂relatively fusible ore＂ was proposed based on the results of HTPES and applied in ore matching of a sinter plant from Shougang Jingtang. The use of IOC （13-18%） instead of standard sintering fines （SSF） improved liquid phase fluidity and ensured the sinter quality. Furthermore, the use of IOC fine （18-23%） with Hainan fine （0-2%） instead of SSF, a mixture of hematite and Marra Mamba ore and concentrates guaranteed the quality of sinter ore through improving fluidity, in the meantime reducing ore matching costs. With the establishment and application of HTPES, the sinter plant has achieved good economic benefits under the premise of ensuring the quality of sinter ore.

Induction of Endoplasmic Reticulum Stress by Cadmium and Its Regulation on Nrf2 Signaling Pathway in Kidneys of Rats

Objective This study was conducted to investigate the regulation of endoplasmic reticulum stress on Nrf2 signaling pathway in the kidneys of rats. Methods Rats were divided into twelve groups of six animals each. Some groups were pre-administered with bacitracin or tauroursodeoxycholic acid(TUDCA), and all of them were treated with 5-20 μmol/kg cadmium(Cd) for 48 h. The oxidative stress levels were analyzed using kits. The mRNA and protein expression levels of endoplasmic reticulum stress-related factors and Nrf2 signaling pathway-related factors were determined using RT-PCR and western blot. Results Cd exposure resulted in oxidative stress in the kidneys of rats and upregulated the expression of endoplasmic reticulum stress(ERS)-related factors and Nrf2 signaling pathway-related factors, especially at doses of 10 and 20 μmol/kg Cd, and the expression changes were particularly obvious. Moreover, after pretreatment with bacitracin, Cd upregulated the expression of ERS-related factors to a certain extent and, at higher doses, increased the mRNA expression of Nrf2. After pretreatment with TUDCA, Cd reduced the level of ERS to a certain extent; however, at these doses, there were no significant changes in the expression of Nrf2. Conclusion Cadmium can result in ERS and oxidative stress in the kidneys of rats, activate Nrf2, and upregulate the transcriptional expression of phase II detoxification enzymes under these experimental conditions. ERS has a positive regulation effect on Nrf2 signaling pathway but has little effect on the negative regulation of Nrf2 signaling pathway in cadmium toxicity.
