Optical information transfer through random unknown diffusers using electronic encoding and diffractive decoding

Free-space optical information transfer through diffusive media is critical in many applications, such as biomedical devices and optical communication, but remains challenging due to random, unknown perturbations in the optical path. We demonstrate an optical diffractive decoder with electronic encoding to accurately transfer the optical information of interest, corresponding to, e.g., any arbitrary input object or message, through unknown random phase diffusers along the optical path. This hybrid electronic-optical model, trained using supervised learning, comprises a convolutional neural network-based electronic encoder and successive passive diffractive layers that are jointly optimized. After their joint training using deep learning,our hybrid model can transfer optical information through unknown phase diffusers, demonstrating generalization to new random diffusers never seen before. The resulting electronic-encoder and optical-decoder model was experimentally validated using a 3D-printed diffractive network that axially spans llumination wavelength in the terahertz spectrum, carrying the desired optical information through random unknown diffusers. The presented framework can be physically scaled to operate at different parts of the electromagnetic spectrum, without retraining its components, and would offer low-power and compact solutions for optical information transfer in free space through unknown random diffusive media.

A bibliometric analysis of academic publication on diabetic retinopathy disease trends during 1980-2014:a global and medical view

AIM： To investigate diabetic retinopathy（DR） literature using the Institute for Scientific Information（ISI） Web of Science（Wo S） database and to analyse the correlation results between socio-economic development datas and number of DR ***： The statistical analysis of the documents published during 1980-2014 was analysed. The data of this study were based on the database of Wo S. ＂Diabetic retinopathy＂ was used as the keywords to search the Wo S ***： The United States ranked first in the DR research with 1840 publications and 24.38% of the world production followed by England and Japan. Besides, the most productive country was Iceland. A high correlation was found between number of publications and 2014 gross domestic product（ GDP） values of 81 countries（r =0.800, P 〈0.001）. We found a significant correlation between number of publications and Human Development Index（HDI）（r =0.645, P =0.001）. There is a moderate correlation between people with diabetes and number of DR publications for 81 countries（r =0.514, P 〈0.01）. It could be analysed that estimated publication number with DR title will be 445 according to the regression curve constituted with cubic model in 2015（R2=1.000）.CONClUSION： More DR studies have been published in developed countries, DR and other complications of diabetes have gradually increased in developing countries over recent decades. It can be expected that the number of DR studies will gradually increase in developing countries.

Differences between radiological findings of COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 infections in pediatric patients

Changes in retinal vessel diameters in migraine patients during attack-free period

AIM：To evaluate the retinal vessel diameters in patients with migraine by optical coherence tomography（OCT）.METHODS：In this cross-sectional study,124 eyes of 62 patients with a diagnosis of unilateral migraine during attack-free period and 42 age-and sex-matched control subjects were included. Migraine patients were divided into the ≤2 migraine attacks per month group and the ≥5 migraine attacks per month group. All subjects underwent complete ophthalmological and neurological examinations before measurements. Retinal vessel diameters and choroidal thickness were examined with the Spectralis ***：The mean diameters of the arteries in the eyes on the headache side of control group,≥5 migraine attacks per month and ≤2 migraine attacks per month group at 480 μm from the optic disk（Raster 3）were 119.54±46.69,136.68±25.93 and 119.34±31.75 μm respectively with a steady decline to 105.57±32.15,118.18±31.87 and 108.05±38.77 μm at 1440 μm（Raster 7）,the last measurement point,respectively. The retinal artery diameter measurements were significantly increased in ≥5 migraine attacks per month patients at four out of five measured points compared to control group（P〈0.05）. There were no statistical differences at any of the points of vein measurements. The choroidal thickness measurements were significantly decreased in ≥5 migraine attacks per month patients at all measured points compared to control group（P〈0.05）.CONClUSION：The retinal artery diameter is found to increase significantly and the choroidal thickness is found to decrease in the eyes on the headache side in ≥5 migraine attacks per month patients compared to control group.

Early identification of pathogenic bacteria in food,water,and bodily fluids is very important and yet challenging,owing to sample complexities and large sample volumes that need to be rapidly *** screening methods based on plate counting or molecular analysis present various tradeoffs with regard to the detection time,accuracy/sensitivity,cost,and sample preparation ***,we present a computational live bacteria detection system that periodically captures coherent microscopy images of bacterial growth inside a 60-mm-diameter agar plate and analyses these time-lapsed holograms using deep neural networks for the rapid detection of bacterial growth and the classification of the corresponding *** performance of our system was demonstrated by the rapid detection of Escherichia coli and total coliform bacteria(i.e.,Klebsiella aerogenes and Klebsiella pneumoniae ***)in water samples,shortening the detection time by >12 h compared to the Environmental Protection Agency(EPA)-approved *** the preincubation of samples in growth media,our system achieved a limit of detection(lOD)of ~1 colony forming unit(CFU)/l in≤9 h of total test *** platform is highly cost-effective(~$0.6/test)and has high-throughput with a scanning speed of 24 cm2/min over the entire plate surface,making it highly suitable for integration with the existing methods currently used for bacteria detection on agar *** by deep learning,this automated and cost-effective live bacteria detection platform can be transformative for a wide range of applications in microbiology by significantly reducing the detection time and automating the identification of colonies without labelling or the need for an expert.

Celiac disease can be triggered by upper abdominal surgery, such as vagotomy, oesophagectomy, pancreatico-duodenectomy, and gastrojejunal anastomosis. Here we report a case of a 24 year-old woman who developed celiac disease after an ileal resection for perforated Meckel's diverticula. This is the first reported celiac case that has been triggered, not by upper abdominal surgery, but after ileal resection for Meckel's diverticula.

Role of echo Doppler ultrasonography in the evaluation of postprandial hyperemia in cirrhotic patients

AIM: To assess the role of echo-Doppler ultrasonography in postprandial hyperemia in cirrhotic patients by comparing the results with the hepatic vein catheterization ***: Patients with cirrhosis, admitted to the portal hemodynamic laboratory were included into the study. After an overnight fast, echo-Doppler ultrasonography (basal and 30 min after a standard meal) and hemodynamic studies by hepatic vein catheterization (basal, 15 min and 30 min after a standard meal) were performed. Ensure Plus (Abbot laboratories, North Chicago, Il) was used as the standard liquid meal. Correlation analysis of the echo-Doppler and hepatic vein catheterization measurements were done for the basal and postprandial ***: Eleven patients with cirrhosis (5 Child A, 4 Child B, 2 Child C) were enrolled into the study. After the standard meal, 8 of the 11 patients showed postprandial hyperemia with increase in portal blood flow, portal blood velocity and hepatic venous pressure gradient. Hepatic venous pressure gradient in the postprandial period correlated positively with postprandial portal blood velocity (r = 0.8, P lated inversely with postprandial superior mesenteric artery pulsatility index (r = -1, P lUSION: Postprandial hyperemia can be efficiently measured by echo-Doppler ultrasonography and the results are comparable to those obtained with the hemodynamic studies.

Assessment of the correlation between serum prolidase and alpha-fetoprotein levels in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: To determine the predictive value of increased prolidase activity that reflects increased collagen turnover in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC).METHODS: Sixty-eight patients with HCC(mean age of 69.1 ± 10.1), 31 cirrhosis patients(mean age of59.3 ± 6.3) and 33 healthy volunteers(mean age of51.4 ± 12.6) were enrolled in this study. Univariate and multivariate analysis were used to evaluate the association of serum α-fetoprotein(AFP) values with HCC clinicopathological features, such as tumor size,number and presence of vascular and macrovascular invasion. The patients with HCC were divided into groups according to tumor size, number and presence of vascular invasion(diameters; ≤ 3 cm, 3-5 cmand ≥ 5 cm, number; 1, 2 and ≥ 3, macrovascular invasion; yes/no). Barcelona-clinic liver cancer(BClC)criteria were used to stage HCC patients. Serum samples for measurement of prolidase and alphafetoprotein levels were kept at-80 ℃ until *** levels were measured spectrophotometrically and AFP concentrations were determined by a chemiluminescence immunometric commercial diagnostic ***: In patients with HCC, prolidase and AFP values were evaluated according to tumor size, number,presence of macrovascular invasion and BClC staging classification. Prolidase values were significantly higher in patients with HCC compared with controls(P lidase levels were significantly associated with tumor size and number(P ly). The pre-determination of the effect of earthquake in subsurface structures is gaining importance increasingly. One of the main factors in determination of the damages due to earthquakes in subsurface structures, especially tunnels are horizontal acceleration value. The aim of the study is to put forward the scale of damage due to earthquake in a wastewater tunnel in Istanbul, the most populated city of Turkey, under construction. Possible damage caused by earthquake will be determined by utilizing the information about the route of the wastewater tunnel analyzed in the study.

A case of isolated hepatic actinomycosis causing right pulmonary empyema

The clinical picture of actinomycosis was first described in *** agents are found in the natural flora of the oral cavity, upper gastrointestinal system and female genital systems. Actinomyces israelii is usually responsible for the infections and causes chronic suppurative and granulomatous infections. The most common disease form is cervicofascial infection. liver is involved in 5% of all actinomycosis infections. liver involvement secondary to any primary infection site in the abdomen frequently occurs. In 15% of abdominal infections the liver is also involved. However, in very rare cases, a primary focus cannot be found, and these cases are called primary or isolated hepatic actinomycosis （IHA）. IHA which is frequently seen as a solitary abscess can be confused with a malignancy both clinically and radiologically.
