This study investigated the osteogenic performance of new brushite cements obtained from Li+-dopedβ-tricalcium phosphate as a promising strategy for bone ***(Li+)is a promising trace element to encourage the migration and proliferation of adipose-derived stem cells(hASCs)and the osteogenic differentiation-related gene expression,essential for ***-situ X-ray diffraction(XRD)and in-situ 1H nuclear magnetic resonance(1H NMR)measurements proved the precipitation of brushite,as main phase,and monetite,indicating that Li+favored the formation of monetite under certain ***+was detected in the remaining pore solution in significant amounts after the completion of *** calorimetry results showed an accelerating effect of Li+,especially for low concentration of the setting retarder(phytic acid).A decrease of initial and final setting times with increasing amount of Li+was detected and setting times could be well adjusted by varying the setting retarder *** cements presented compressive mechanical strength within the ranges reported for cancellous *** vitro assays using hASCs showed normal metabolic and proliferative *** immunodetection and gene expression profile of osteogenic-related markers highlight the incorporation of Li+for increasing the in vivo bone *** osteogenic potential of Li-doped brushite cements may be recommended for further research on bone defect repair strategies.

The Harvesting of the Endangered Palm Euterpe edulis in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest: The case of Linear canopy Openings

The palm Euterpe edulis was historically very exploited by humans and even today, many individuals are cut down by collectors to harvest the edible palm hearts. The ecological aspects of this anthropogenic pressure and its related effects are poorly understood. Here we investigate if linear canopy openings in a fragment of Brazilian Atlantic Forest can cause edge effects and facilitate predatory harvesting by humans. We sampled in Tinguá Biological Reserve (Southeastern Brazil) native palm populations at forest edges adjacent to two linear canopy openings, and in the forest interior far from any edge. Our 8-year monitoring showed that the linear canopy openings negatively affected the palm populations reducing its density and regeneration mainly on edges, but no local extinction was observed. Thus, the direct human impact from harvesting, adverse survival conditions on edges and interspecific competition causes population declines with no local extinction, so this suggests that E. edulis may resist even under strong anthropogenic pressure.

Effects of corn gluten feed inclusion at graded levels in a corn-soybean diet on the ileal and fecal digestibility of growing pigs

Background： This study aimed to determine the effect of the inclusion of corn gluten feed （CGF） on the apparent and standardized ileal digestibility of protein and amino acids and the apparent ileal and total tract digestibility of energy in growing pigs. The study was performed using 16 barrows （weight, 45.3 ±4.5 kg） that were fitted with a T cannula at the terminal ileum. There were four treatments： a corn-soybean diet without CGF and three corn-soybean diets containing increasing levels of CGF （65, 130, and 195 g/kg）. Data were analyzed according to a randomized complete block design, four blocks with four pigs each （one pig per treatment）. The trend of the response （linear or quadratic） was determined using orthogonal contrasts, and when a linear effect was determined, a linear equation was obtained. Results： The results showed that the inclusion up to 195 g/kg of CGF in the corn-soybean diet did not diminish the ileal digestibility （apparent and standardized） of protein and amino acids （P 〉 0.05）, except that of phenylalanine, cystine, and proline. A linear decrease （P 〈 0.05） per gram of CGF added to the diet in the apparent and standardized ileal digestibility of phenylalanine （0.011 and 0.015 percentage units, respectively）, cystine （0.048 and 0.043 percentage units, respectively）, and proline （0.045 and 0.047 percentage units, respectively） was noted. Similarly, ileal digestibility of dry matter and energy were adversely affected （reduced by 0.028 and 0.025 percentage units, respectively, per gram of CGF increment in the diet）. A significant （P 〈 0.05） linear reduction in total tract digestibility with increase in CGF amount in the diet was observed for energy （0.027 percentage units）, dry matter （0.027 percentage units）, crude protein （0.020 percentage units）, and neutral detergent fiber （0.041 percentage units） per gram of CGF added to the diet. Corrosion Resistance of Transmission Pipeline Steel Coated with Five Types of Enamels

Corrosion is one of the main causes of incidents occurred in hazardous liquid and gas transmission pipelines in the USA, resulting in a loss of over $12 billion per year. In this study, the corrosion resistance of pipeline steel coated with five types of enamel was investigated in 3.5 wt% NaCl solution with linear polarization resistance and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests. Steel coupons were cut from API 5L X65 pipeline steel and coated with five types of enamels using the wet process. The microstructures of all enamel samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy. Experimental results indicate that all enamel coatings increase the corrosion resistance of pipeline steel, and pure enamel PE2, mixed enamels ME1 and ME2 have higher corrosion resistances than pure enamel PE1 and mixed enamel ME3.

NATURAL AND ANTHROPOGENIC FACTORS CONTROLLING GULLY EROSION IN THEBASALTIC UPLAND OF SOUTHERN BRAZIL

This paper describes an analysis of natural and anthropogenic factors controlling the evolution of gullies in a rural basin in the basaltic upland in the State of Rio Grande do Sul, Southern Brazil. In this region of deep ferrallitic soils with more than 60% clay, runoff and erosion are of increasing concern. In the Tabo?o drainage basin (100 km2), gully erosion was studied in a field survey that measured rills and gullies. Eighty-four gullies were identified. They had an average length of 136 m, were 10 m wide, and 3 m deep and had a volume of 15.458 m3. Each gully was characterised in terms of factors that included slope, geological structure, presence of piping, drainage, soil use, and the presence of surface and subsurface flow. On average, the main channels had knickpoints varying from 2 m to 7 m, and their evolution in the vertical plane increased until bed-rock basalt material was reached, after which gullies increase in width and length. Gully development was also monitored from 1991 to 2003. Subsurface flow appears to be the principal agent controlling their development. Results show that both natural (slope, surface curvature, geological structure and rainfall) and anthropogenic (soil use, road construction) factors are important in gully development. The change in cultural practices throughout the drainage basin from conventional to direct seeding has led to increased subsurface flow, which was more important than surface runoff in causing erosion. However, the higher rainfall during El Ni?o Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and the consequently higher subsurface flow were the dominant factors. From 1991 to 2003 a total land loss of 1,013 m3 was observed in one gully, with 236 m3 lost during the 1992 ENSO and 702 m3 during the 1997 ENSO; 95% of the total volume lost occurred during ENSO periods.

Coffee Orchard Response to Enhanced Efficiency Phosphate Fertilizer

Phosphorus (P) plays a crucial role in plant growth by aiding in the development of strong roots, promoting flower and fruit formation, and aiding in photosynthesis. Studies to improve P fertilizers efficiency in coffee orchards are necessary due to the need for better efficiency and the lack of information on enhanced efficiency P fertilizers. This study aimed to investigate the effect of MAP coated with anionic polymers (Policote) on coffee orchard development. A coffee trial was carried out in a randomized block design with three replications. The treatments, applied at coffee planting, were arranged in an incomplete factorial (2 × 4) + 1, using two P sources (MAP and Policote coated MAP), four P rates (40, 80, 120, and 160 g P2O5 plant-1) and control (without application of P fertilizer). Plant height was evaluated in the 2016/2017, 2017/2018, and 2018/2019 seasons, while coffee bean maturation, yield, and agronomic P efficiency use were evaluated in the last two seasons. P fertilization did not affect coffee bean maturation and increased coffee yield in 31-month-old plants when differences among P sources and rates were observed. Using Policote-coated P fertilizer resulted in higher yields at the same P rate, as well as similar yields at a lower P rate, compared to conventional fertilizer. Policote-coated P fertilizer can be used as an enhanced efficiency fertilizer and is an efficient way to deliver required P to plants. The target for reducing farm investment, increasing agricultural profits, preserving phosphatic rock reserves, and avoiding the overuse of phosphate fertilizer could be realized through the rational use of enhanced efficiency fertilizers.
