Functional Characterization of Bifidobacteria of Human Origin: A case Study by the Students of Food Science and Technology of the University of Foggia (Southern Italy)

The aim of this paper was to study the potential technological and probiotic properties of bifidobacteria isolated from human feces. Bifidobacteria, naturally present in the dominant colonic microbiota, represent up to 25% of the cultivable faecal bacteria in adults and 80% in infants. Bifidobacteria have been shown to adhere and colonize in high numbers different types of cultured intestinal epithelial cells;moreover some authors reported that some strains are able to stabilize the intestinal microbiota during and after antibiotic therapy, modulate the immune system, protecting against chemically induced intestinal inflammation and reducing symptoms of colitis. Eight isolates of bifidobacteria were studied to assess their technological and probiotic traits;the technological characterization relied on the assessment of enzymatic activities (proteolytic and lipolytic activity), growth under various conditions (pH, temperature and addition of salt), acidifying ability and metabolism (arginine deamination, esculin, esculin hydrolysis and citrate metabolism). The study of the probiotic characteristics focused on the evaluation of the survival at low pH and with bile salts added, antibiotic resistance, and hydrophobic properties. As a result of this process, two promising strains were selected for further studies.

Objective: To describe and analyze the epidemiological aspects as well as the observance of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) of people bitten by a dog and received at the Buanionzi State Health Center from 2014 to 2017. Methods: Descriptive cross-sectional study which took place in two stages. The first interview was an interrogation carried out at the health Center until surgical trimming (100% of cases) followed by PEP (70.3% of cases) according to the Essen protocol. The second time was a 24 h telephone interview after a missed appointment for a dose of PEP. Results: The prevalence was 5.6 bites/10.000 people. The average age was 26.4 ± 18.3 years. Age ≤ 26 years was more concerned with 59.3% of cases (p = 0.006) in which children Conclusion: The rabies risk is potential in Boma. Efforts in terms of public health strategies must be made to reduce it.

Background:To evaluate the effectiveness and safety of cabazitaxel in castration-resistant prostate cancer patients aged>80 years,we performed a retrospective study on a sample of patients from 11 Italian cancer *** and methods:Fifty-seven patients aged>80 years were treated with cabazitaxel after previous failure with docetaxel;39 completed a comprehensive geriatric assessment questionnaire(34 fit and 5 vulnerable)and 8 patients(14%)had an Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status(PS)>2,while most had a PS of 0-1(86%).cabazitaxel was administered at a dose of 25 mg/m^(2)in 30(52%)patients and 20 mg/m^(2)or adapted schedules in 27(48%)*** schedules were adopted mainly in patients>85 years(75%),with a PS>2(87.5%),and those classified as vulnerable(100%).Results:The duration of treatment was 4.8 months and was comparable in all subgroups;disease control rate was reported in 36 patients(63%);prostate-specific antigen response was recorded in 18 patients(31.5%).Median overall survival was 13.1 months regardless of age(85 years),but overall survival was reduced in vulnerable(7.2 months)and PS>2 patients(6.8 months).The most frequently documented grade 3-4 toxicities were neutropenia(14%)and diarrhea(10.5%).Six patients(10.5%)dropped out due to severe ***:Octogenarian patients can be treated with cabazitaxel with reduced doses or alternative schedules that are associated with less toxicity and fewer treatment *** geriatric assessment could facilitate more appropriate patient selection.

Evolving Profile and Determinants of Post-Stroke Cognitive Impairment in the 3rd Month among Kinshasa’s Survivors (Democratic Republic of the Congo)

Background: Neurocognitive impairments are common among stroke survivors. Despite their negative impact on daily life, their evolving, and determinants are not fully known in our context. To determine evolving characteristics of post-stroke cognitive impairment in the 3rd month as well as determinants among Kinshasa’s adult survivors is the aim of this study. Methods: We sought to determine neurocognitive deficits in the 3rd month in a prospective single-group cohort study in 3 hospital centers in Kinshasa. Eighty-six adult stroke survivors with a neurological and neuroimaging computerized diagnosis of stroke were assessed using MOca (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) in the first and the third months post-stroke. Results: Neurocognitive disorders ranged from 79.1% in the first month to 54.7% in the third month after stroke (with 4.7% with severe decline). Gender female [AOR = 86.3 (CI95%: 2.8 - 2643.7);p 0.01], Chronic hypertension ([AOR = 26.8 (CI95%: 2.55 - 282.55);p 0.01]), the pathological lipid profile [AOR = 8.7 (CI95%: 1.10 - 68.82);p = 0.04] and worse MOca score at the first month ([AOR = 41.2 (CI95%: 8.13 - 2134.81);p = 0.021]) were identified as worse predictors of cognitive impairments at the third month post-stroke. Conclusion: Post-stroke cognitive impairment is common and decreases in the 3rd month post-stroke. Chronic hypertension, gender, lipid profile, and the first month MOca score are predictors of worse cognitive performance in Kinshasa survivors. These findings suggested the role of early management in improving cognition and the control of stroke risk factors.

Lifestyle Changes for Abdominal Obesity Prevention and Encouraging Fruit Consumption May Be Beneficial in Preventing Left Ventricular Hypertrophy in Sub-Saharan African and Maghreb

There is a growing body of evidence showing a close correlation between left ventricular mass with cardiovascular morbidity and overall mortality. Therefore, identifying the determinants of left ventricular hypertrophy can be of great importance for cardiovascular prevention, for prognosis and therapeutic intervention. Objective: To assess the prevalence and identify the independent determinants of echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy in The MA-Ghreb and Sub-Saharan Africa Left-Ventricul ArGEometry Study (MAG-SALVAGES) participants. Methods: The MAG-SALVAGES is a community based study in which 100 asymptomatic Black Sub-Saharan African (BSSA) and 189 white skin Maghreb within the age of 18 to 55 years underwent a resting echocardiography. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was utilized to identify the independent determinants of LVH left ventricular hypertrophy. Results: Men represented the majority of the enrolled participants: 173 (59.9%). Echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy was seen in 10 (3.5%) participants. Age ≥40 years, female gender, overall obesity, abdominal obesity, hypertension status and less fruit consumption were significantly associated with echocardiography left ventricular hypertrophy. After adjusting for confounding factors, age ≥40 years, female gender, abdominal obesity and less fruit consumption were independently and significantly associated with echocardiographic left ventricular hypertrophy, as illustrated in the following equation: Y = 0.36 + 0.162 age >40 years + 2.69 female gender + 2.52 abdominal obesity + 1.31 less fruit consumption. Conclusion: Lifestyle changes for the prevention of abdominal obesity and encouraging fruit consumption may be beneficial in preventing left ventricular hypertrophy.
