It is well known that smart thermostats (STs) have become key devices in the implementation of smart homes;thus, they are considered as primary elements for the control of electrical energy consumption in households. Moreover, energy consumption is drastically affected when the end users select unsuitable STs or when they do not use the STs correctly. Furthermore, in future, Mexico will face serious electrical energy challenges that can be considerably resolved if the end users operate the STs in a correct manner. Hence, it is important to carry out an in-depth study and analysis on thermostats, by focusing on social aspects that influence the technological use and performance of the thermostats. This paper proposes the use of a signal detection theory (SDT), fuzzy detection theory (FDT), and chi-square (CS) test in order to understand the perceptions and beliefs of end users about the use of STs in Mexico. This paper extensively shows the perceptions and beliefs about the selected thermostats in Mexico. Besides, it presents an in-depth discussion on the cognitive perceptions and beliefs of end users. Moreover, it shows why the expectations of the end users about STs are not met. It also promotes the technological and social development of STs such that they are relatively more accepted in complex electrical grids such as smart grids.

Absorption and fluorescence properties of chromophoric dissolved organic matter （CDOM） along a 124 km transect in the Barataria Basin, a large estuary located in Louisiana, Usa, were investigated during high and low flow periods of the Mississippi River in the spring and winter of 2008-2009. Mean CDOM absorption at 355 nm from the marine to the freshwater end member stations ranged from （3.25 ± 0.56） to （20.76 ± 2.43） m^-1 for the three month high flow period whereas it varied from （1.48 ± 1.08） to （25.45 ± 7.03） m^-1 for the same stations during low flow period. Corresponding salinity values at these stations indicated the influence of river and shelf exchanges in the lower basin and precipitation and runoff in the upper basin. An inverse relationship of CDOM absorbance and fluorescence with salinity observed in the basin could he a useful indicator of salinity. CDOM fluorescence also varied over a large range showing an approximately 8 to 12-fold increase between the marine and freshwater end members for the two flow seasons. Excitation-emission matrix spectral plots indicated the presence of various fluorescence components with highest being the A-peak, lowest the T-peak, and the C and M-peaks showing similar trends along the transect. During low flow season the A/C ratio were well correlated with station locations indicating increased terrestrial influence towards the upper basin. CDOM absorption and fluorescence at 355 nm were highly correlated and independent of CDOM sources suggesting that fluorescence could be used to characterize CDOM in the basin.

Background Advances in cancer treatments,particularly the development of radiation therapy,have led to improvements in survival outcomes in children with brain tumors.However,radiation therapy is associated with significant long-term neurocognitive morbidity.The present systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the neurocognitive outcomes of children and adolescents with brain tumors treated with photon radiation(XRT)or proton therapy(PBRT).Methods A systematic search was conducted(PubMed,Embase,Cochrane,and Web of Science from inception until 02/01/2022)for studies comparing the neurocognitive outcomes of children and adolescents with brain tumors treated with XRT vs.PBRT.The pooled mean differences(expressed as Z scores)were calculated using a random effects method for those endpoints analyzed by a minimum of three studies.Results Totally 10 studies(n=630 patients,average age range:1–20 years)met the inclusion criteria.Patients who had received PBRT achieved significantly higher scores(difference in Z scores ranging from 0.29–0.75,all Pcant in sensitivity analyses)after treatment than those who had received XRT for most analyzed neurocognitive outcomes(i.e.,intelligence quotient,verbal comprehension and perceptual reasoning indices,visual motor integration,and verbal memory).No robust significant differences(P>0.05 in main analyses or sensitivity analyses)were found for nonverbal memory,verbal working memory and working memory index,processing speed index,or focused attention.Conclusions Pediatric brain tumor patients who receive PBRT achieve significantly higher scores on most neurocognitive outcomes than those who receive XRT.Larger studies with long-term follow-ups are needed to confirm these results.

BACKGROUND Individuals within specific risk groups for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC)[mucinous cystic lesions(MCLs),hereditary risk(HR),and new-late onset diabetes mellitus(NLOD)]represent an opportunity for early cancer detection.Endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)is a premium image modality for PDAC screening and precursor lesion characterization.While no specific biomarker is currently clinically available for this purpose,glypican-1(GPC1)is overexpressed in the circulating exosomes(crExos)of patients with PDAC compared with healthy subjects or those harboring benign pancreatic diseases.AIM To evaluate the capacity of GPC1+crExos to identify individuals at higher risk within these specific groups,all characterized by EUS.METHODS This cross-sectional study with a prospective unicentric cohort included 88 subjects:40 patients with MCL,20 individuals with HR,and 20 patients with NLOD.A control group(CG)was submitted to EUS for other reasons than pancreatic pathology,with normal pancreas and absence of hereditary risk factors(n=8).The inclusion period was between October 2016 and January 2019,and the study was approved by the Ethics Committee of Centro Hospitalar Universitário de São João,Porto,Portugal.All patients provided written informed consent.EUS and blood tests for quantification of GPC1+crExos by flow cytometry and carbohydrate antigen 19-9(ca 19-9)levels by ELIsa were performed in all subjects.EUS-guided tissue acquisition was done whenever necessary.For statistical analysis,SPSS®27.0(IBM Corp.,Armonk,NY,United States)version was used.All graphs were created using GraphPad Prism 7.00(GraphPad Software,san Diego,ca,United States).RESULTS Half of MCLs harbored worrisome features(WF)or high-risk stigmata(HRS).Pancreatic abnormalities were detected by EUS in 10.0%and 35.0%in HR and NLOD individuals,respectively,all considered non-malignant and“harmless.”Median levels of GPC1+crExos were statistically different:MCL[99.4%,interquartile range(IQR):94.9%-99.8%],HR(82.0%,IQR:28.9%-98.2%),NLOD(12.6%,IQR:5.2%-63.4%)

Actinic Superficial Folliculitis after Sun Exposure in a 29-Year-Old Woman

The authors report the clinical case of a 29-year-old caucasian woman who presented with clinicopathological findings and a previous outbreak all suggestive of actinic superficial folliculitis, a rarely reported and probably misdiagnosed phototoxic sun-induced dermatosis first described by Nieboer in 1985. Despite the exuberance of this cutaneous eruption, it is usually auto-limited, reinforcing the importance of its knowledge, for eviction of unnecessary diagnostic tests and therapies. Mechanisms of pathogenesis postulated include ultraviolet A radiation and local heat. This photodermatosis presents as monomorphic, superficial, pustular, and non-pruritic folliculitis affecting the upper body but not the face, usually arising on neck, back, shoulders and upper trunk. The follicular pustules emerge 24 - 72 h after intense exposure to heat and/or sunlight and fade spontaneously in 5 - 10 days, without scarring. This patient showed a 48-hour latency period;the number of pustules and area of the body affected were proportional to the duration of the sunlight exposure;the eruption lasted approximately 10 days. Actinic superficial folliculitis has a specific histology with follicular subcorneal sterile pustules and a mixed inflammatory infiltrate around hair follicles, probably secondary to keratinocytes and Langerhans cells involvement in the immunomodulatory actions of ultraviolet radiation. Recurrence under identical conditions may occur, after a latency period of at least 4 weeks, but usually about 1 year. Actinic superficial folliculitis and related follicular conditions are probably underdiagnosed and subsequently there is insufficient scientific information available to clinicians. Being familiar with these entities is of the utmost importance, since it can be crucial for their management.

Artificial intelligence-based predictive model of nanoscale friction using experimental data

A recent systematic experimental characterisation of technological thin films,based on elaborated design of experiments as well as probe calibration and correction procedures,allowed for the first time the determination of nanoscale friction under the concurrent influence of several process parameters,comprising normal forces,sliding velocities,and temperature,thus providing an indication of the intricate correlations induced by their interactions and mutual effects.This created the preconditions to undertake in this work an effort to model friction in the nanometric domain with the goal of overcoming the limitations of currently available models in ascertaining the effects of the physicochemical processes and phenomena involved in nanoscale contacts.Due to the stochastic nature of nanoscale friction and the relatively sparse available experimental data,meta-modelling tools fail,however,at predicting the factual behaviour.Based on the acquired experimental data,data mining,incorporating various state-of-the-art machine learning(ML)numerical regression algorithms,is therefore used.The results of the numerical analyses are assessed on an unseen test dataset via a comparative statistical validation.It is therefore shown that the black box ML methods provide effective predictions of the studied correlations with rather good accuracy levels,but the intrinsic nature of such algorithms prevents their usage in most practical applications.Genetic programming-based artificial intelligence(AI)methods are consequently finally used.Despite the marked complexity of the analysed phenomena and the inherent dispersion of the measurements,the developed AI-based symbolic regression models allow attaining an excellent predictive performance with the respective prediction accuracy,depending on the sample type,between 72%and 91%,allowing also to attain an extremely simple functional description of the multidimensional dependence of nanoscale friction on the studied variable process parameters.An effective tool for nanoscale friction p

Spermatozoa contain a repertoire of RNAs considered to be potential functional fertility biomarkers.In this study,the gene expression of human sperm subpopulations with high(F1)and low(F2)motility from healthy normozoospermic(N)and asthenozoospermic(A)individuals was evaluated using RNA microarray followed by functional genomic analysis of differentially expressed genes.Results from A-F1 versus N-F1,A-F2 versus N-F2,N-F1 versus N-F2,and A-F1 versus A-F2 comparisons showed a considerably larger set of downregulated genes in tests versus controls.Gene ontology(GO)analysis of A-F1 versus N-F1 identified 507 overrepresented biological processes(BPs),several of which are associated with sperm physiology.In addition,gene set enrichment analysis of the same contrast showed 110 BPs,36 cellular comp on ents,and 31 molecular functions,several of which are involved in sperm motility.A leadi ng・edge analysis of selected GO terms resulted in several down regulated genes encoding to dyn eins and kin esins,both related to sperm physiology.Furthermore,the predicted activation state of asthenozoospermia was increased,while fertility,cell movement of sperm,and gametogenesis were decreased.Interestingly,several downregulated genes characteristic of the canonical pathway protein ubiquitination were involved in asthenozoospermia activation.Conversely,GO analysis of A-F2 versus N-F2 did not identify overrepresented BPs,although the gene set enrichment analysis detected six enriched BPs,one cellular component,and two molecular functions.Overall,the results show differences in gene transcription between sperm subpopulations from asthenozoospermic and normozoospermic semen samples and allowed the identification of gene sets relevant to sperm physiology and reproduction.

Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori)is a gram-negative bacterium that infects approximately 4.4 billion individuals worldwide.However,its prevalence varies among different geographic areas,and is influenced by several factors.The infection can be acquired by means of oral-oral or fecal-oral transmission,and the pathogen possesses various mechanisms that improve its capacity of mobility,adherence and manipulation of the gastric microenvironment,making possible the colonization of an organ with a highly acidic lumen.In addition,H.pylori presents a large variety of virulence factors that improve its pathogenicity,of which we highlight cytotoxin associated antigen A,vacuolating cytotoxin,duodenal ulcer promoting gene A protein,outer inflammatory protein and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase.The host immune system,mainly by means of a Th1-polarized response,also plays a crucial role in the infection course.Although most H.pylori-positive individuals remain asymptomatic,the infection predisposes the development of various clinical conditions as peptic ulcers,gastric adenocarcinomas and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue lymphomas.Invasive and non-invasive diagnostic methods,each of them with their related advantages and limitations,have been applied in H.pylori detection.Moreover,bacterial resistance to antimicrobial therapy is a major challenge in the treatment of this infection,and new therapy alternatives are being tested to improve H.pylori eradication.Last but not least,the development of effective vaccines against H.pylori infection have been the aim of several research studies.

In Arabidopsis, pericentromeric repeats, retroelements, and silenced rRNA genes are assembled into heterochromatin within nuclear structures known as chromocenters. The mechanisms governing higher-order heterochromatin organization are poorly understood but 24-nt small interfering RNAs （siRNAs） are known to play key roles in heterochromatin formation. Nuclear RNA polymerase IV （Pol IV）, RNA-DEPENDENT RNA POLYMERASE 2 （RDR2）, and DICER-LIKE 3 （DCL3） are required for biogenesis of 24-nt siRNAs that associate with ARGONAUTE 4 （AGO4）. Nuclear RNA polymerase V （Pol V） collaborates with DRD1 （DEFICIENT IN RNA-DEPENDENT DNA METHYLATION 1） to generate transcripts at heterochromatic loci that are hypothesized to bind to siRNA-AGO4 complexes and subsequently recruit the de-novo DNA methylation and/or histone modifying machinery. Here, we report that decondensation of the major pericentromeric repeats and depletion of the heterochromatic mark histone H3 lysine 9 dimethylation at chromocenters occurs specifically in pol V and drdl mutants. Disruption of pericentromeric repeats condensation is coincident with transcriptional reactivation of specific classes of pericentromeric 180-bp repeats. We further demonstrate that Pol V functions independently of Pol IV, RDR2, and DCL3-mediated siRNA production to affect interphase heterochromatin organization, possibly by involving RNAs that recruit structural or chromatin-modifying proteins.
