Tri-axial accelerometry allows to determine parental food provisioning behaviour in a marine bird

The study of parental food provisioning is essential for understanding the breeding ecology of *** conducted the first study using accelerometry to detect food provisioning in birds,using Support Vector Machine(SVM)models to identify when adults feed chicks of three different age *** were attached to the head of adult female Imperial Shags(Leucoca.bo atriceps),and various attributes derived from the acceleration signals were used to train SVM models for each chick age *** performance improved with chick age class,with SVM models achieving high overall accuracy(>88%)and highest sensitivity in older chick ca.egories(>91%).However,precision values,especially for younger chicks,remained relatively low(between 26%and 45%).The applica.ion of a time filter based on the minimum duration of the observed food provisioning behaviours for each chick age ca.egory,improved model performance by reducing false provisioning behaviours,particularly in the model for older chicks,which showed the highest precision(72.4%).This study highlights the effectiveness of accelerometry and machine learning in studying parental food provisioning in birds,providing a rapid and accurate data collection method to complement traditional *** described methodology ca. be applied to any bird species that exhibits distinctive movements while feeding its offspring and has suitable characteristics for attaching an accelerometer to the body part that best ca.tures this ***,it is hoped that the results of this study will contribute to future research on key q.estions in parental investment theory and reproductive strategies in birds.

Structural Foundation and Geometry of the Material Singularity (and Its q.antum Entanglement)

In this paper we develop and study, as the second part of one more general development, the energy transmutation eq.ation for the material singularity, previously obtained through the symmetrisation of a wave packet, that is, we develop the correlation between the terms of this eq.ation, which accounts for the formation of matter from a previous vibrational state, and the different possible energy species. These energetic species are ascribed, in a simplified form, to the eq.ation E¯ω=E¯k+E¯f, which allows us, through its associated phase factor, to gain an insight into the wave character of the kinetic energy and thus to attain the basis of the matter-wave, and all sorts of related phenomenologies, including that concerning q.antum entanglement. The formation of the matter was previously identified as an energetic process, analogous to the kinetic one, in which finally the inertial mass is consolidated as a mass in a different phase, now, in addition, the mass of the material singularity is identified as a volumetric density of waves of toroidal geometry created in the process of singularisation or energy transfer between species, which makes it possible to establish the real relation or correspondence between the corpuscular and photonic energy eq.ation (E=mc2=hν), i.e. to explain through m the intimate sense of the first eq.ivalence, which explains what νis in the second one.

Sea Cucumber Fishery in Aurora, Philippines

This study was conducted to provide a preliminary assessment of the sea cucumber fishery in Aurora, Philippines. This was conducted from February to June 2013. All sea cucumber gatherers and traders, obtained through snowball sampling, in each identified sea cucumber fishery area in six coastal municipalities (Baler, Dipaculao, Dinalungan, ca.iguran, Dilasag and Dingalan) were interviewed using a structured interview schedule and focused group discussions (FGD). Results revealed that gathering sea cucumbers were accomplished by handpicking, skin diving or compressor diving. A total of 15 commercial species were regularly gathered. Out of this, three species are of very high economic value (≥Php 4000/kg) (Holothuria nobilis, Holothuria sca.ra, and Actinopyga leca.ora). The average number of kilograms harvested per hour per trip ranges from 0.21 (Holothuria fuscopunctata) to 2.71 (Holothuria sca.ra), while the average size of commonly gathered sea cucumber varies among species with Holothuria leca.ora showed an average length (29.26 cm) greater than recorded 24 cm. Processing mainly involves washing, slicing, boiling, drying and packing. Processed sea cucumbers or trepan were sold to middlemen or direct buyers who usually offered higher prices (36.36% up to 69.20%) than the former. Problems encountered by sea cucumber gatherers and traders include a decline in total ca.ch, a shift in area of collection from intertidal zones to deeper waters, an increase in the number of hours spent in finding and gathering sea cucumbers, the use of compressors in gathering, the decline of larger species and gathering of smaller sizes in huge amount, the absence of conservation program for sea cucumber, and the lenient implementation of government policies with regards to coastal resources management.

CLE peptide-mediated signaling in shoot and vascular meristem development

Multicellular organisms rely on the transmission of information between cells to coordinate various biologica. processes during growth and development. Plants, like animals, utilize small peptide ligands as signaling molecules to transmit information between cells. These polypeptides typica.ly act as extracellular messengers that are perceived by membrane-bound receptors, which then transduce the signal into the recipient cell to modify downstream gene transcription. The CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION-RELATED (CLE) proteins represent one of the largest and best understood families of small polypeptides in plants. Members of the CLE family play critica. roles in mediating cell fate decisions during plant development, particularly within the uniq.e meristem structures that contain stem cell reservoirs acting as sources of cells for continuous organ formation. Here we review the roles of CLE family members in regulating the activity of the shoot apica. meristems that generate the aerial parts of the plants, and of the vascular meristems that produce the sugar- and water-conducting tissues. A systematic literature search was performed using the Google Scholar and PubMed search engines. The keywords “CLE”, “CLV3”, “TDIF”, “meristem”, and “plant stem cells” were used as search terms. The 95 retrieved articles, dating from 1992, were organized by topic and their key findings incorporated into the text. We summarize our current understanding of how the CLE peptide CLV3 orchestrates the activity of shoot apica. meristems, describing its expression, processing and movement, as well as its intracellular signal transduction pathways, key target genes and downstream gene regulatory networks. We also discuss the roles of CLE peptide signaling in the vascular meristems to promote proca.bial cell proliferation and suppress xylem differentiation. An Approach to q.antify Endomembrane Dynamics in Pollen Utilizing Bioactive Chemica.s

Tip growth of pollen tubes and root hairs occurs via rapid polar growth. These rapidly elongating cells req.ire tip-focused endomembrane trafficking for the deposition and recycling of proteins, membranes, and cell wall materials. Most of the image-based data published to date are subjective and non-q.antified. q.antitative and com- parative descriptors of these highly dynamic processes have been a major challenge, but are highly desirable for genetic and chemica. genomics approaches to dissect this biologica. network. To address this problem, we screened for small molecules that perturbed the loca.ization of a marker for the Golgi Ras-like monomeric G-protein RAB2：GFP expressed in transgenic tobacco pollen. Semi-automated high-throughput imaging and image analysis resulted in the identifica. tion of novel compounds that altered pollen tube development and endomembrane trafficking. Six compounds that ca.sed misloca.ization and varying degrees of altered movement of RAB2：GFP-labeled endomembrane bodies were used to generate a training set of image data from which to q.antify vesicle dynamics. The area, velocity, straightness, and intensity of each body were q.antified using semi-automated image analysis tools revealing q.antitative differences in the phenotype ca.sed by each compound. A score was then given to each compound enabling q.antitative comparisons between compounds. Our results demonstrate that image analysis ca. be used to q.antitatively evaluate dynamic sub- cellular endomembrane phenotypes induced by bioactive chemica.s, mutations, or other perturbing agents as part of a strategy to q.antitatively dissect the endomembrane network.
