Numerical Investigations on Hydrodynamic Performance of An Open Comb-Type Breakwater Under Medium Water Levels

The comb-type breakwater(CTB)has been proposed and investigated in recent years due to its advantages in terms of deep-water adaptability,material saving and water *** existing empirical formulae for CTBs have been so far restricted to the water level above the bottom of the superstructure,which mainly occurs under the high tides or storm ***,based on recent engineering applications and experimental observations,the most severe conditions for CTBs are more likely to occur under a medium water level,because impulsive wave pressure may occur due to interactions between waves and the special chamber in ***,during the most of construction and operation periods,the CTBs are mainly working under the medium water levels,i.e.,water levels below the bottom of the *** this study,the effects of main influence parameters on the horizontal wave force coefficient and wave transmission coefficient for open CTBs(with partially immersed side plates)under medium water levels were investigated based on a 3D numerical wave flume and corresponding empirical formulae were *** is indicated that the location of the side plate related to the main caisson has significant influence on the hydrodynamic performance of *** engineering applications,the location of the side plate can be designed at b/L≤0.15 or b/L≥0.3(where b is the distance between the side plate and the front face of the main caisson and L is the incident wave length)for efficiently lowering the horizontal wave force and wave *** flow mechanism of impulsive wave force on CTBs was revealed based on synchronous analyses of flow fields and pressure *** appropriate design of the height of the superstructure according to H/hD≤1.0 or H/hD≥1.5(where H is the incident wave height and hD is the distance between the still water level and the bottom of the superstructure),the likely impulsive wave pressure on the side plate can also be diminished.

Transition metal dichalcogenides,especially MoS_(2),have been examined as promising catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction(HER).Meanwhile,MoS_(2)with various nanostructures and exposed more active sites has been broadly explored for boosting the HER performances at wide pH ***,a synergistic Pt and Te codoping strategy has been used to enhance the catalytic performance(including reducing the overpotential and promoting the HER reaction kinetics)of ultrathin MoS_(2)nanosheets in alkaline and acid electrolytes,which has delivered better than single Pt doping or single Te doping.

Computational thermodynamics,known as CALPHAD method when dawned in 1950s,aimed at coupling phase diagrams with thermochemistry by computational *** eventually evolves toward kinetic simulations integrated with thermodynamic calculations,i.e.,computational kinetics,including diffusion-controlled phase transformation,precipitation simulation,and phasefield *** the meantime,thermodynamic,mobility,and physical property databases for multi-component and multi-phase materials,served as basic knowledge for materials design,are critically evaluated by CALPHAD approach combining key experiments,first-principles calculations,statistic methods,and empirical *** combination of these computational techniques with their conjugated databases makes it possible to simulate phase transformations and predict the microstructure evolution in real materials in a foreseeable *** links to microand macro-scale simulations lead to a multi-scale computational framework,and aid the search for the quantitativerelations among chemistry,process,microstructures,and materials properties in order to accelerate materials development and *** is a new route of materials and process design pursued by Integrated Computational Materials Engineering(ICME)and Materials Genome Initiative(MGI).This article presents a review on the basic theories and applications,the state of the art and perspective of computational thermodynamics and kinetics.

Self-optimized single-nanowire photoluminescence thermometry

Nanomaterials-based photoluminescence thermometry(PLT)is a new contact-free photonic approach for temperature sensing,important for applications ranging from quantum technology to biomedical imaging and *** though numerous new materials have been explored,great challenges and deficiencies remain that hamper many *** contrast to most of the existing approaches that use large ensembles of rare-earth-doped nanomaterials with large volumes and unavoidable inhomogeneity,we demonstrate the ultimate size reduction and simplicity of PLT by using only a single erbium-chloride-silicate(ECS)***,we propose and demonstrate a novel strategy that contains a self-optimization or "smart"procedure to automatically identify the best PL intensity ratio for temperature *** automated procedure is used to self-optimize key sensing metrics,such as sensitivity,precision,or resolution to achieve an all-around superior PLT including several record-setting metrics including the first sensitivity exceeding 100%K^(-1)(~138%K^(-1)),the highest resolution of 0.01 K,and the largest range of sensible temperatures 4-500 K operating completely within 1500-1800 nm(an important biological window).The high-quality ECS nanowire enables the use of well-resolved Stark-sublevels to construct a series of PL intensity ratios for optimization in infrared,allowing the completely Boltzmann-based sensing at cryogenic temperature for the frst *** single-nanowire PLT and the proposed optimization strategy overcome many existing challenges and could fundamentally impact PL nano-thermometry and related applications such as single-cell thermometry.

A CA-LBM model for simulating dendrite growth with forced convection

A two-dimensional coupled model of the cellular automaton(CA)and the lattice Boltzmann method(LBM)was developed to simulate the solute dendrite growth of Fe-C-Mn-S alloy in the presence of forced *** model describes the transport phenomenon by the evolution of moving pseudo-particles distribution functions and utilizes the LBM to solve fluid flow and solute transport under forced convection *** on the solute field calculated by the CA technique,the dynamics of dendrite growth were determined by the previously proposed local solute balance *** accuracy of the forced convection dendrite growth model was verified by comparing the CA-LBM model with Lipton-Glicksman-Kurz analytical *** is revealed that the dendrite symmetry structure is destroyed compared to free diffusion,and the upstream arm is more developed than the downstream arm of the *** enriched solute segregates more at the downstream side than at the upstream side of the *** length of the upstream dendrite arm increases firstly and then becomes stable with the increase in the flow velocity,the dendrite necking is restrained,and the vertical dendrite arm becomes longer.

Lithium sulfur(Li-S)batteries are the promising power sources,but their commercialization is significantly impeded by poor energy-storage functions at high sulfur *** we report that such an issue can be effectively addressed by using a mussel-inspired binder comprised of chitosan grafted with catecholic moiety for sulfur *** resulting sulfur cathodes possess a high loading up to 12.2 mg cm-2 but also exhibit one of the best electrochemical properties among their *** excellent performances are attributed to the strong adhesion of the binder to sulfur particles,conducting agent,current collector,and *** versatile adhesion effectively increases the sulfur loading,depresses the shuttle effect,and alleviates mechanical pulverization during cycling *** present investigation offers a new insight into high performance sulfur cathodes through a bio-adhesion viewpoint.

Study on characteristics of internal solitary waves in the Malacca Strait based on Sentinel-1 and GF-3 satellite SAR data

The study of the characteristics of internal solitary waves happened in the Malacca Strait is an urgent problem for submarine, ship navigation and marine engineering. Based on SAR remote sensing data obtained from the high spatial resolution Sentinel-1 and GF-3, the internal solitary wave characteristics of the Malacca Strait are investigated. By use of 20 Sentinel-1 SAR images from June 2015 to December 2016 and 24 GF-3 images from April2018 to March 2019, the spatial distribution characteristics of internal solitary wave s are statistically analyzed. It is found that the internal solitary waves are usually in the form of wave packets and single solitary waves, and the maximum crest length of the leading wave can reach 39 km. The amplitude and group velocity of internal solitary wave s can be calculated by the inversion model of high-order nonlinear Schrodinger(NLS) equation, and the calculated amplitude of the internal solitary wave s and the propagation group velocity of the wave packets range from 4.7 m to 23.9 m and 0.12 m/s to 0.40 m/s, respectively. The range of phase velocity of single internal solitary waves obtained by Kd V equation is 0.26 m/s to 0.60 m/s. In general, the amplitude and the velocity of internal solitary wave s in Malacca strait are related to the topography.

Preparation and activity evaluation of NiMoB/-Al_2O_3 catalyst by liquid-phase furfural hydrogenation

Amorphous MoNiB/γ/-Al2O3 alloy catalysts were prepared by reducing NiCI2.6H20 and （NH4）6Mo7O24.4H2O supported on γ-Al2O3 with NaBH4 as reducing agent. Using liquid-phase hydrogenation of furfural （FFR） as a probe reaction, the activity of MoNiB/γ/Al2O3 was examined. Compared to NiB and NiMoB, NiMoB/γ-Al2O3 exhibited excellent activity and selectivity towards furfuryl alcohol （FFA）. After reaction for 3.0 h at 80 ℃ and 5.0 MPa in methanol, FFR conversion reached 99% with FFA yield of 91%. The effects of doping amount of Mo and calcination temperature before NaBH4 reduction on hydrogenation activity were also investigated. The optimum Mo/Ni atom ratio and calcination temperature were found to be 1：7 and 300 ℃, respectively. XRD patterns and SEM images indicated that NiMoB over the surface of γ-Al2O3 was amorphous and highly dispersed, which was responsible for the high thermal stability of the title catalyst.
