Quality of Life in Women with Endometriosis Pelvic Pain Treated with the Levonorgestrel-Releasing Intrauterine system

Objective: To evaluate the quality of life in patients with endometriosis pelvic pain before and after the application of the levonorgestrel-releasing intrauterine system (LnG-IUs). Design: Open non-comparative study. setting: Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital at Monterrey, Mexico. sample: 29 women aged 18 to 40 years with pelvic pain associated with endometriosis confirmed by laparoscopy. Methods: After laparoscopy but before LnG-IUs insertion (basal visit) and 6 months afterwards, modified Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP-30) was applied. Main outcomes measures: size of change of questionnaire scores, need of additional analgesic therapy and adverse effects. statistical Analysis: Differences in the questionnaire scores before and after intervention were analyzed by student t-test. Results: Final analysis set included 29 women aged 31.7 ± 4.7 years years. The AsRM surgical staging of endometriosis was mild in 19.3 moderate in 13.7 and severe in 76% of the patients. The general perception of quality of life improved from 52 at baseline to 98% at six months (p se events were mild in nature, 19 patients reported no adverse events during the study (65.5%). Two patients (6.9%) required the use of concomitant therapy with non-steroidal analgesics for relief of pain. Conclusion: The application of LnG-IUs in patients with pelvic pain associated with endometriosis improved significatively all aspects related with quality of life as measured with Endometriosis Health Profile (EHP-30). We concluded that LnGIUs may be an effective and convenient therapeutic alternative for the management of pain associated with endometriosis.

Diamond possesses many favorable properties for biochemical sensors,including biocompatibility,chemical inertness,resistance to biofouling,an extremely wide potential window,and low double-layer *** hardness of diamond,however,has hindered its applications in neural implants due to the mechanical property mismatch between diamond and soft nervous ***,we present a flexible,diamond-based microelectrode probe consisting of multichannel boron-doped polycrystalline diamond(BDD)microelectrodes on a soft Parylene C *** developed and optimized a wafer-scale fabrication approach that allows the use of the growth side of the BDD thin film as the sensing *** to the nucleation surface,the BDD growth side exhibited a rougher morphology,a higher sp^(3) content,a wider water potential window,and a lower background *** dopamine(DA)sensing capability of the BDD growth surface electrodes was validated in a 1.0 mM DA solution,which shows better sensitivity and stability than the BDD nucleation surface *** results of these comparative studies suggest that using the BDD growth surface for making implantable microelectrodes has significant advantages in terms of the sensitivity,selectivity,and stability of a neural ***,we validated the functionality of the BDD growth side electrodes for neural recordings both in vitro and in *** biocompatibility of the microcrystalline diamond film was also assessed in vitro using rat cortical neuron cultures.

Hypolipidemic Activity of Microwave-Dehydrated Mango (<i>Mangifera indica</i>L.) Powder in Mice Fed a Hypercholesterolemic Diet

The effect of dietary supplementation with mango (Mangifera indica L.) powder obtained by microwave dehydration was studied in normal and hypercholesterolemic mice. The phenolic profiles in methanolic extracts and antioxidant activities were determined using high-performance liquid chromatography and DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTs (2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethyl-benzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) assays, respectively. The total phenolic content of microwave-dehydrated mango powder was 1451.7 ± 26.7 μggallic acid equivalents/g dry weight. The main phenolic compounds identified were gallic acid, epicatechin, ferulic acid, and catechin. The anti-oxidant activity was 14.6% higher in microwave-dehydrated mango powder than in conventional mango powder. Mice were fed a hypercholesterolemic diet (1 g cholesterol/100g over 7 days). The hypercholesterolemic mice whose diets were supplemented with microwave-dehydrated mango powder showed a significant decrease (P ≤ 0.05) in total serum cholesterol compared to the hypercholesterolemic mice and the mice fed with conventional dehydrated mango powder. We observed a significant increase (P ≤ 0.05) in HDL-c levels in the microwave-dehydrated mango powder group mice (12.4 ± 1.3 mmol/L) compared to the hypercholesterolemic group (8.6 ± 1.4 mmol/L) and the conventional-dehydrated mango powder group (10.9 ± 1.3 mmol/L). The mice provided with microwave-dehydrated mango powder had significantly lower (P ≤ 0.05) levels of serum LDL-c (36.0%) and total cholesterol (43.3%) compared to the mice in hypercholesterolemic group. notably, the atherogenic index was 72% lower in the microwave-dehydrated mango powder group compared to the hypercholesterolemic group. These results suggest that the biocompounds, such as polyphenols and dietary fiber, found in mango pulp might improve the lipid profile in mice fed a hypercholesterolemic diet.

Healing Effect of the Extract of Kombucha in Male Wistar Rats

In order to assess the impact of the early and late tissue repair of Kombucha extract on incised wounds in animal models, 24 Wistar male rats were used and divided into three groups: one of the groups received a topical cure on the wound with Brosin, and the other received the Kombucha extract. The third group did not receive any treatment, working as a control group. The objective was to evaluate and compare the Kombucha extract with a commercial healing product. Each one of the animals took a 1 cm wound in depth and length at a femur level on a side of the left thigh. The healing process was evaluated on an early and late phase by performing a morphometric and morphological analysis under the assumption of a faster recovery with the use of Kombucha. The results showed that there was a poor recovery in the control group. On the other hand, the other two groups, Brosin and Kombucha, were similar, with little inflammation and a high cell proliferation and migration along with basal array pulls of elastin and collagen which served for angiogenesis, repair and renovation of the new tissue.

AIM:The pathogenesis of hypogonadism in liver cirrhosis is not well *** results from our laboratory showed that IGF-1 deficiency might play a pathogenetic role in hypogonadism of *** administration of IGF-1 for a short period of time reverted the testicular atrophy associated with advanced experimental cirrhosis. The aim of this study was to establish the historical progression of the described alterations in the testes, explore testicular morphology,histopathology,cellular proliferation,integrity of testicular barrier and hypophyso- gonadal axis in rats with no ascitic cirrhosis. METHODs:Male Wistar rats with histologically-proven cirrhosis induced with carbon tetrachloride(CCI_4)for 11 wk, were allocated into two groups(n=12,each)to receive recombinant IGF-1(2 μg/100 gd,sc)for two weeks or *** rats receiving vehicle were used as control group(n=12). REsULTs:Compared to controls,rats with compensated cirrhosis showed a normal testicular size and weight and very few histopathological testicular abnormalities. However,these animals showed a significant diminution of cellular proliferation and a reduction of testicular transferrin *** addition,pituitary-gonadal axis was altered,with significant higher levels of FsH(Pscontrols)and increased levels of LH in untreated cirrhotic ***,IGF-1 treatment normalized testicular transferrin expression and cellular proliferation and reduced serum levels of LH(P=ns vs controls,and Ps untreated cirrhotic group). COnCLUsIOn:The testicular barrier is altered from an early stage of cirrhosis,shown by a reduction of transferrin expression in sertoli cells,a diminished cellular proliferation and an altered gonadal *** treatment with IGF-1 could be also useful in this initial stage of testicular disorder associated with compensated cirrhosis.

Motor-Cognitive Intervention in Mexican Older Adults

Two motor-cognitive interventions were implemented to evaluate their efficacy in cognitive improvement in Mexican older adults 65 years and more. The intervention group received a dance video games plus a cognitive task (dual-task);the comparison group received only the dance video game, in sessions of 45 minutes, 3 times a week, for 12 weeks. The Barthel Index and Lawton and Brody Index, the Center for Epidemiologic studies Depression scale-Revised were applied the Digit span Test, the stroop Test, and Color Trail Making. Gait parameters were assessed by GAITRite? electronic walkway (CIR systems). The design was quasi-experimental. sites were randomly assigned to intervention groups. The intervention group started with 32 participants and finished with 15;the comparison group started with 20 participants and finished with 18. Participants in the intervention group had to mimic the dance movement of a video game and, after the second week to name progressively three objects without stopping dancing. A multivariate repeated measures model (MAnO-VA) was fit with four variables. A time-by-group interaction was observed in the stroop test, and Digits span Backwards was in favor of the dual task group. The stroop test, Digit span Backwards, gait speed, and step length showed effect time. Both groups improved in gait speed and step length by the end of the intervention. Results show it is feasible for Mexican older adults with little schooling to perform dual tasks and improve cognitive tasks and gait speed. Limitations were high attrition due to unforeseen situations and small sample size.

swallowtail butterflies(Papilionidae)are a historically significant butterfly group due to their colorful wing patterns,extensive morphological diversity,and phylogenetically important position as a sister group to all other butterflies and have been widely studied regarding ecological adaption,phylogeny,genetics,and ***,they contain a unique class of pigments,i.e.,papiliochromes,which contribute to their color diversity and various biological functions such as predator avoidance and mate *** date,however,the genomic and genetic basis of their color diversity and papiliochrome origin in a phylogenetic and evolutionary context remain largely ***,we obtained high-quality reference genomes of 11 swallowtail butterfly species covering all tribes of Papilioninae and Parnassiinae using long-read sequencing *** with previously published butterfly genomes,we obtained robust phylogenetic relationships among tribes,overcoming the challenges of incomplete lineage sorting(ILs)and gene *** genomic analyses indicated that the evolution of Papilionidae-specific conserved non-exonic elements(PsCnEs)and transcription factor binding sites(TFBss)of patterning and transporter/cofactor genes,together with the rapid evolution of transporters/cofactors,likely promoted the origin and evolution of *** findings not only provide novel insights into the genomic basis of color diversity,especially papiliochrome origin in swallowtail butterflies,but also provide important data resources for exploring the evolution,ecology,and conservation of butterflies.

Resilience in a Mexican Pacific Mangrove after Hurricanes: Implications for Conservation Restoration

High resilience is a mangrove trait that is compatible with life in a dynamic environment, however, catastrophic disturbance can lead to the entire forest structure being re-defined. In the Pochutla district of Oaxaca, two hurricanes made landfall in 1997 and one more in 2012. Following the 1997 hurricanes, extensive mangrove restoration was carried out in the study area. A cohort of Rhizophora mangle saplings planted in 2007 showed 10% mortality during the first year after transplantation, an average growth of 39 cm, and a positive association between growth rate and the level of water in the lagoon. Following Hurricane Carlotta of 2012, measurements of structural impact and tree mortality were taken in restored R. mangle stands and in naturally regenerated patches of Laguncularia racemosa. The role of tree girth in R. mangle susceptibility to wind damage was also investigated. The stands of R. mangle suffered 80% reduction in stem density and 86% loss of basal area, whereas the corresponding values for L. racemosa were 26% and 15%, respectively. Within stands of R. mangle, mortality conserved a positive relationship with structural impact categories and the frequency of snapped stems was segregated across girth classes. The results suggest that L. racemosa has greater resilience to hurricane damage, which has some consistency with previous research and implications for conservation restoration protocols. In order to promote a system with higher resilience, we recommend an on-going restoration effort with mixed mangrove species.
