Water buffalo(Bubalus bubalis)and domestic cattle(Bos taurus)are closely related species.However,embryo transfer interspecies has been attempted without any success.The failure in hybrid embryo-implantation is associated with the glycocode in the maternal-fetal interface.Glycosylation patterns have been studied in different species of ruminants;however,in B.bubalis,only the binucleated cells(BNC)have been analyzed.This glycocode is essential for a successful embryo-implantation and can be defined by Lectin-Histochemistry(LHC).The aim of this study is to compare the glycosylation pattern of placenta and uterus in water buffaloes and cattle by LHC.Tissue samples of placenta and uterus from pregnant Mediterranean female water buffaloes(Buf1)and Angus cows(Bov1)were analyzed.All animals were euthanized at 98 days of gestation.LHC was carried out using twelve lectins(Con A,LCA,PSA,sWGA,PHA-e,SBA,UEA-1,WGA,RCA-1,PNA,DBA,BSA-1).The intensity of lectin binding was semiquantitatively scored using a scale of 0(negative)to 3(strongly positive).Difference between species was found in trophoblast layer by PSA,SWGA,PNA and BSA-1,in BNC,and in the mononuclear cells by LCA,PSA,PHA-e,DBA,BSA-1,PNA.In utero,differences in the apical cellular membrane and the secretion of glands were identified by DBA and RCA-1,and in the cytoplasm of those glandular epithelial cells by PHA-e,BSA-1,WGA,and SBA.In both species,BNC presented a strong positive reaction with DBA and SBA,a moderate response by LCA,PHA-e,BSA-1 and PNA lectin,and a low reaction by PSA,UEA-1,SWGA,WGA,Con A and RCA-1.The results found in this study suggest that although both species are closely related,glycosylation patterns in the placenta and uterus are different,thus providing a possible reason for embryo transfer not being possible between these species.

Robot impedance control and passivity analysis with inner torque and velocity feedback loops

Impedance control is a well-established technique to control interaction forces in robotics. However, real implementations of impedance control with an inner loop may suffer from several limitations. In particular, the viable range of stable stiffness and damping values can be strongly affected by the bandwidth of the inner control loops （e.g., a torque loop） as well as by the filtering and sampling frequency. This paper provides an extensive analysis on how these aspects influence the stability region of impedance parameters as well as the passivity of the system. This will be supported by both simulations and experimental data. Moreover, a methodology for designing joint impedance controllers based on an inner torque loop and a positive velocity feedback loop will be presented. The goal of the velocity feedback is to increase （given the constraints to preserve stability） the bandwidth of the torque loop without the need of a complex controller.

On the use of positive feedback for improved torque control

This paper considers the torque control problem for robots with flexible joints driven by electrical actuators. It is shown that the achievable closed-loop tracking bandwidth using PI torque controllers may be limited due to transmission zeros introduced by the load dynamics. This limitation is overcome by using positive feedback from the load motion in unison with PI torque controllers. The positive feedback is given in terms of load velocity, acceleration and jerk. Stability conditions for designing decentralized PI torque controllers are derived in terms of Routh-Hurwitz criteria. Disturbance rejection properties of the closed system are characterized and an analysis is carried out investigating the use of approximate positive feedback by omitting acceleration and/or jerk signals. The results of this paper are illustrated for a two DoF （degrees of freedom） system. Experimental results for a one DoF system are also included.

Current approaches for the treatment of chronic lymphocytic leukemia （CLL） have greatly improved the prognosis for survival, but some patients remain refractive to these therapeutic regimens. Hence, in addition to reducing the long-term side- effects of therapeutics for all leukemia patients, there is an urgent need for novel therapeutic strategies for difficult-to-treat leukemia cases. Due to the cytotoxicity of drugs, the major challenge currently is to deliver the therapeutic agents to neoplastic cells while preserving the viability of non-malignant ceils. In this study, we propose a therapeutic approach in which high doses of hydroxychloroquine and chlorambucil were loaded into biodegradable polymeric nanopartides coated with an anti-CD20 antibody.We first demonstrated the ability of the nanoparticles to target and internalize in tumor B-cells. Moreover, these nanoparticles could kill not only p53-mutated]deleted leukemia cells expressing a low amount of CD20, but also circulating primary ceils isolated from chronic lymphocytic leukemia patients. The safety of these nanoparticles was also demonstrated in healthy mice, and their therapeutic effects were shown in a new model of aggressive leukemia. These results showed that anti-CD20 nanoparticles containing hydroxychloroquine and chlorambucil can be effective in controlling aggressive leukemia and provided a rationale for adopting this approach for the treatment of other B-cell disorders.

Metabolic Syndrome and Perioperative Complications during Scheduled Surgeries with Spinal Anesthesia

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a constellation of factors associated with increased risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and Diabetes Mellitus. Despite of the many studies related to MS, little is known about its impact on scenarios such as surgical anesthesia. Objective: To examine the correlation between demographic and metabolic variables with the occurrence of perioperative complications in patients with MS undergoing scheduled surgeries using a spinal anesthesia technique in the surgery department at the University Clinic San Juan de Dios in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia. Methods: Observational, analytical, cross-sectional, single-center study of 150 subjects with MS and 150 control subjects. Perioperative complications, socio-demographic, hemodynamic and respiratory variables were registered. Groups were compared using t test, Fisher’s exact test or Chi-square, as appropriate. We applied a logistic multiple regression model, adjusted by backward stepwise at 0.25 and forward at 0.05, to find possible incompatible associations. p value < 0.05 was considered significant. Results: There were significant differences between groups in age, American Society of Anesthesiologists physical status classification, frequency of diseases associated to MS and perioperative complications. There were no cases of mortality among patients. There was statistically significant difference between the two groups for intraoperative hypotension and hypertension with p values of <0.0001 and 0.034. Among postoperative complications there was statistically significant difference in pain (13.3% vs 5.3% in patients without MS) and nausea and/or postoperative vomiting (8% vs 2% in patients without MS) with a p value of 0.027 and 0.015 (by Fisher) respectively. Conclusions: Metabolic abnormalities in MS are a risk factor for developing complications in the perioperative period of patients scheduled for surgeries using the subarachnoid anesthesia technique. Ethnicity has been associated with the incidence of diseases and consequently it is a cornerstone in medical genetic studies. It is mainly important in admixture populations, where the population stratification can produce spurious results that lead to erroneous conclusions. Consequently, population stratification has become one of the most important confounding factors in population-based genetic association studies, especially in Latino populations. Cartagena de Indias is a cosmopolitan city with dissimilar ancestry proportions due to recent miscegenation. This population mainly exhibits African and Amerindian matrilineal ancestries. Nevertheless, important asymmetries in the paternal genetic history related to the complex patterns of migration in the colonial period increase the male genetic diversity in this population. As a result of this recent admixture, population stratification has arisen, where each subpopulation is not equally represented. Consequently, the allele differences between cases and controls could be related with different frequencies among different population strata rather than the association of the genes with the disease. In order to define the patrilineal substructure of the Cartagena’s population, a total of 130 unrelated men were ancestrally studied using 15 Y-STR loci routinely employed in anthropological, forensic and population genetics. Our results show that Cartagena is an admixture population consisting of European (80%), Amerindian (10%) and African ancestries (10%), which are represented by haplogroups R1b and I2a (xI2a1), Q-M242/Q-M3, and E1b1a/E1b1b, respectively. Complex genetic patterns found in Cartagena’s population emphasize the importance to know the genetic variation in order to diminish the inconsistence for future genetic association studies. In addition, our findings illustrate the complex genetic background of Cartagena population and reinforce the need to encompass more geographic regions to generate more robust data for anthropological and forensic applications.

CdSe thin films doped with S2-, growing on glass substrates using the chemical bath deposition (CBD) at temperature of T = 80 oC, with precursor solutions: CdCl2 0.01 M, KOH 0.1 M, 0.5 M, SeC(NH2)2 0.04 M, NH4NO3, SC(NH2)2 0.2 M, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 mL of doping. The concentration of atoms was obtained by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), S = 14.11-42.57, Cd = 49.11-59.59, and Se = 50.99-2.29, X-ray diffraction, identifies mixture of Wurzite/Zinc blende doped films phases and size of grain of 24-15 nm. Optical Absorption Spectra have redshifts of the forbidden band gap (Eg) of 1.8-2.3 eV. Raman spectra (RS) show the Raman shift, confirming formation of nanocrystals. From the dark conductivity vs. 1/kT behavior on the 100-500 K range, attributed to doping effects at the grain boundaries and quantum confinements. A thermodynamic model is proposed using the equation of Nernst to evaluate changes in the Gibbs free energy and investigate the spontaneity of reactions.
