The effect of fair disclosure regulation on timeliness and informativeness of earnings announcements

This paper examines the effect of Korea's fair disclosure regulation on the timeliness and informativeness of earnings announcements. The present regulation for Korean listed firms requires that if a company's sales revenue, operating income(or loss) and net income(or loss) have changed by over 30%compared to the prior year, the firm must disclose this information through a preliminary financial report(PFR) even before the company is audited by external auditors. To analyze the effects of this policy, we first investigate the timeliness of preliminary financial report disclosures. We examine the extent to which Korean listed companies actually comply with the requirement for prompt notification of information concerning material changes in financial performance. Second, we investigate the informativeness of preliminary financial reports by analyzing differential stock market reactions to different timings of preliminary financial report disclosures. Our empirical results reveal that more than half of our sample firms release their preliminary financialreports after external audits are completed, thereby potentially invalidating the effectiveness of the regulation. In addition, we find that preliminary financial reports have information value only if they are disclosed prior to annual audit report dates. This finding supports the notion that timeliness increases the informativeness of preliminary financial report disclosure by curbing insiders' ability to potentially profit from their information advantage.

Hemorrhagic hemangioma in the liver:A case report

Hemangioma is the most common type of benign tumor that arises in the liver. Although rupture and hemorrhage of hepatic hemangioma are rare complications, they can be the cause of mortality. The authors report a case of hemorrhagic hepatic hemangioma: in a 54-yearold woman who was admitted with epigastric *** had taken oral contraceptives several weeks *** results of a blood examination were normal. An abdominal computed tomography scan revealed a tumor in hepatic segment 4, and a hemorrhage inside the cystic mass was suspected. The mass was removed laparoscopically to confirm the tumor properties and control the hemorrhage. The pathologic findings of the resected mass were consistent with hepatic hemangioma with intratumoral hemorrhage. The patient was discharged 8 d after the surgery, without further complications or complaints, and the patient's condition was found to have improved during follow-up.

Infectious agents causing aborted fetus problems in domestic pigs were investigated in this study. More than 10 different infectious agents were known to cause abortion in swine and the major eight viruses among them were inspected. One hundred twelve samples of aborted fetuses from nine provinces in South Korea were collected during April to November, 2013 in this study for the diagnosis of infectious agents causing abortions in pigs. Eight major infection viruses were examined in this study mainly using various diagnostic kits and reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction （RT-PCR）. Positive rate of the detection differed from each viruses. In this study, the main focus was the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus （PRRSV）, which took the second large portion in the positive rate of detection, and then its ORF5 gene was compared with modified live virus （MLV） vaccine strain to figure out the influence of vaccine on disease. Between four positive samples＇ sequence, two of them were 99.9%-100% similar to MLV vaccine strain and two other samples were 88.6%-92.7% similar. Similarity rate of the sequences between the vaccine and virus from aborted fetuses are very crucial, because it implies that abortion in swine can be made due to the usage of vaccine not only by the infection of field virus, and if MLV vaccine actually do have an impact on the infection, usage of the vaccine should be reconsidered.

Covalently bonded halogen ligands possess unusual charge distributions, attracting both electrophilic and nucleophilic molecular ligands to form halogen bondings. In many biochemical systems, halogen bondings and hydrogen bondings coexist. The interplay between halogen and hydrogen bondings has been actively studied in various three-dimensional bulk molecular co-crystals. It was found that halogen bondings could be complementary to hydrogen bondings due to their similar bonding strength and dissimilar directionality. In those ensemble-averaging approaches, however, it was not possible to extract local information such as individual bonding configurations and nano-level domain structures, which is a crucial part of supramolecular studies. In this study, we directly visualize the individual molecular configuration of a brominated molecule and the role of halogen bondings on Au（111） using scanning tunneling microscopy. The precise arrangement of observed molecular structures was reproduced by first-principle studies and explained in the context of halogen and hydrogen bondings. We discuss the distances and the strengths of the observed halogen bondings and hydrogen bondings, which are consistent with previous bulk data.

Long term exposure of skin to high temperature induces activation of transient receptor potential cation channel subfamily V member 1(TRPV-1), as well as increase of matrix metalloprotease 9(MMP-9), which breaks down extracellular matrix in skin. Thus, along with photo-aging, heat also accelerates skin-aging as a long term effect. Here, heat-absorbing substances with heat energy-blocking effects were screened, and the blockage rate was calculated as "Thermal Protection Factor(TPF)". Herbal plant extracts such as Prunus Mume fruit extract and Chamaecyparis Obtusa polysaccharide were able to reduce skin damage by reducing TRPV-1 activation, heat-induced MMP-9 expression and other heat-induced inflammatory responses such as monocyte chemoattractant protein-1(MCP-1) expression. Also, a cream containing heat-absorbing and modulating actives showed statistically significant skin elasticity and redness-controlling effects in a clinical study.

Background There were limited data comparing the major clinical outcomes between first-generation （1G）-drug eluting stentts （DES） and second-generation （2G）-DES in patients with acute myocardial infarction （AMI） after percutaneous coronary intervention （PCI） during very long follow-up periods. We thought to investigate the comparative efficacy and safety of 2G-DES compared with 1G-DES in AMI patients during 5-year follow-up periods. Method A total of 1016 eligible AMI patients who underwent PCI with 1G-DES [paclitaxel-, sirolimus-, 1G-zotarolimus-eluting stent （endeavor~ or endeavor sprintS）, n = 554] or 2G-DES [2G-zotarolimus （endeavor resolute~）- or everolimus-eluting stent, n = 462] were enrolled. The primary endpoint was the occurrence of major adverse cardiac events （MACE） defined as total death, non-fatal myocardial infarction （MI）, target lesion revascularization （TLR）, target vessel revascularization （TVR）, non-target vessel revascularization （Non-TVR） and the secondary endpoint was stem thrombosis （ST） at 5 years. Results Two propensity score-ma- tched （PSM） groups （232 pairs, n = 464, C-statistic = 0.802） were generated. During the 5-year follow-up period, the cumulative incidence of TLR [hazard ratio （HR）： 3.133; 95% confidence interval （CI）： 1.539-6.376; P = 0.002], TVR （HR： 3.144; 95% CI： 1.59645.192; P = 0.001） and total revascularization rate （FIR： 1.874; 95% CI： 1.086-3.140; P = 0.023） were significantly higher in 1G-DES compared with 2G-DES after PSM. However, the incidence of total death, non-fatal MI and ST were similar between the two groups. Conclusion In this single-center and all-comers registry, 2G-DES＇s superiorities for TLR, TVP, and total revascularization in AMI patients suggested during 5-year clinical follow-up periods.
