In this work,we have prepared the hierarchically nanostructured core–shell NiCo layered double hydroxide(NiCo-LDH)nanosheets-and ZnFe_(2)O_(4) nanocubes-decorated polyacrylonitrile(PAN)/pitch-based carbon nanofibers(PPCNs)webs(NiCo-LDH@PPCNs as cathode and ZnFe_(2)O_(4)@PPCNs as anode materials)with the bonded network structure by a facile and scalable hydrothemal ***,the low-cost pitch with lower softening point(~90℃)as co-precursor was utilized to produce the PAN/pitch-based carbon nanofibers(PPCNs)with enhanced electrical *** obtained PPCNs with pitch content of 30%(PP30CNs)electrode material delivered higher specific capacitance(~67 F g^(-1))than that(~48 F g^(-1))of the PAN-based carbon nanofibers(PCNs)at 1 A g^(-1),due to the increased electrical conductivity and lower interfacial charge transfer resistance(RCT)of~0.16 ***,the NiCo-LDH-decorated PP30CNs(NiCoLDH@PP30CNs)as cathode material showed superior specific capacitance of 1162 F g^(-1) at 1.0 A g^(-1) and ultra-high retention rate of 91.56%at 10 A g^(-1).The ZnFe_(2)O_(4)@PP30CNs as anode material also showed higher specific capacitance of 282 F g^(-1) at 1 A g^(-1) and good rate capability with capacitance retention of 56.73%at 10 A g^(-1).The as-fabricated asymmetric NiCo-LDH@PP30CNs//ZnFe_(2)O_(4)@PP30CNs hybrid supercapacitor device delivered a specific capacitance of~98 F g^(-1) at 1 A g^(-1) and excellent capacitance retention of~88%after 5000 charge–discharge cycles.

Prognostic value of inflammation-based markers in patients with pancreatic cancer administered gemcitabine and erlotinib

AIM: To evaluate the value of systemic inflammationbased markers as prognostic factors for advanced pancreatic cancer(PC). METHODS: Data from 82 patients who underwent combination chemotherapy with gemcitabine and erlotinib for PC from 2011 to 2014 were collected retrospectively. Data that included the neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio(NLR), the platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio, and the C-reactive protein(CRP)-to-albumin(CRP/Alb) ratio were analyzed. Kaplan-Meier curves, and univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analyses were used to identify the prognostic factors associated with progression-free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS). RESULTS: The univariate analysis demonstrated the prognostic value of the NLR(P = 0.049) and the CRP/Alb ratio(P = 0.047) in relation to PFS, and a positiverelationship between an increase in inflammation-based markers and a poor prognosis in relation to OS. The multivariate analysis determined that an increased NLR(hazard ratio = 2.76, 95%CI: 1.33-5.75, P = 0.007) is an independent prognostic factor for poor OS. There was no association between the PLR and the patients' prognoses in those who had received chemotherapy that comprised gemcitabine and erlotinib in combination. The Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test determined significantly worse outcomes in relation to PFS and OS in patients with an NLR > 5 or a CRP/Alb ratio > ***: Systemic inflammation-based markers, including increases in the NLR and the CRP/Alb ratio, may be useful for predicting PC prognoses.

Small interfering RNA （siRNA） is an attractive therapeutic candidate for sequence- specific gene silencing to treat incurable diseases using small molecule drugs. However, its efficient intracellular delivery has remained a challenge. Here, we have developed a highly biocompatible fluorescent carbon dot （CD）, and demonstrate a functional siRNA delivery system that induces efficient gene knockdown in vitro and in vivo. We found that CD nanoparticles （NPs） enhance the cellular uptake of siRNA, via endocytosis in tumor cells, with low cytotoxicity and unexpected immune responses. Real-time study of fluorescence imaging in live cells shows that CD NPs favorably localize in cytoplasm and successfully release siRNA within 12 h. Moreover, we demonstrate that CD NP-mediated siRNA delivery significantly silences green fluorescence protein （GFP） expression and inhibits tumor growth in a breast cancer cell xenograft mouse model of tumor-specific therapy. We have developed a multifunctional siRNA delivery vehicle enabling simultaneous bioimaging and efficient downregulation of gene expression, that shows excellent potential for gene therapy.

Dear Editor,Industrial emissions have played a major role in damaging the ozone layer,leading to increased atmospheric penetration of ultraviolet B (UV-B)(290–320 nm) radiation (Jordan,2002).The recovery rate of the damaged ozone layer in the mid-latitudes and tropics has been insignificant since 1979(Chipperfield et al.,2017),even after the adoption of the Montreal Protocol (Protocol,1987),and the recovery process is expected to take many *** the meantime,UV-B radiation continues to penetrate the atmosphere (McKenzie et al.,2011;Bais et al.,2019).The characteristic short length and high energy of this radiation wavelength can directly affect major molecules,such as DNA,proteins,and lipids,which are important to living beings (Hideg et al.,2013).Rice is one of the major global crops,which is generally cultivated at lower latitudes and can potentially be exposed to a higher flux of UV radiation due to greater solar angles and longer duration of sunlight (Kataria and Guruprasad,2012).

Here,CuO nanorods fabricated via pulsed laser ablation in liquids were decorated with Ir,Pd,and Ru NPs(loading~7 wt%) through pulsed laser irradiation in the liquids *** resulting NPs-decorated CuO nanorods were characterized spectroscopically and employed as multifunctional electrocatalysts in OER,HER,and the furfural oxidation reactions(FOR).Ir-CuO nanorods afford the lowest overpotential of~345 mV(HER) and 414 mV(OER) at 10 mA cm^(-2),provide the highest 2-furoic acid yield(~10.85 mM) with 64.9% selectivity,and the best Faradaic efficiency~72.7% in 2 h of FOR at 1.58 V(***).In situ electrochemical-Raman analysis of the Ir-CuO detects the formation of the crucial intermediates,such as Cu(Ⅲ)-oxide,Cu(OH)_(2),and Ir_x(OH)_y,on the electrode-electrolyte surface,which act as a promoter for HER and *** Ir-CuO ‖ Ir-CuO in a coupled HER and FOR-electrolyzer operates at~200 mV lower voltage,compared with the conventional electrolyzer and embodies the dual advantage of energy-saving H_(2) and 2-furoic acid production.

AIM: To evaluate the diagnostic yield and safety of a modified technique for the histological diagnosis of subepithelial tumors (SETs). METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent a modified technique for the histological diagnosis of gastric SETs, consisting of a mucosal incision with a fixed flexible snare (MIF) and deep-tissue biopsy under conventional endoscopic view, from January 2012 to January 2013 was performed. Eleven patients with gastric SETs 10-30 mm in diameter and originating from the third or fourth layer on endoscopic ultrasonography were included. RESULTS: The mean age was 59.8 (range, 45-76) years, and 5 patients were male. The mean size of the SETs was 21.8 (range, 11-30) mm. The number of biopsy specimens was 6.3 (range 5-8). The mean procedure time was 9.0 min (range, 4-17 min). The diagnostic yield of MIF biopsies was 90.9% (10/11). The histological diagnoses were leiomyoma (4/11, 36.4%), aberrant pancreas (3/11, 27.3%), gastrointestinal stromal tumors (2/11, 18.2%), an inflammatory fibrinoid tumor (1/11, 9.1%); one result was non-diagnostic (1/11, 9.1%). There were six mesenchymal tumors; the specimens obtained in each case were sufficient for an immunohistochemical diagnosis. There was no major bleeding, but one perforation occurred that was successfully controlled by endoscopic clipping. CONCLUSION: The MIF biopsy was simple to perform, safe, and required a shorter procedure time, with a high diagnostic yield for small SETs.

AIM: To investigate the effectiveness and safety of limited endoscopic sphincterotomy (EST) plus large balloon dilation (LBD) for removing choledocholithiasis in patients with periampullary diverticula (PAD). METHODS: A total of 139 patients with common bile duct (CBD) stones were treated with LBD (10-20 mm balloon diameter) after limited EST. Of this total, 73 patients had PAD and 66 patients did not have PAD (controls). The results of stone removal and complications were retrospectively evaluated. RESULTS: There were no significant differences between the PAD and the control groups in overall successful stone removal (94.5% vs 93.9%), stone removal in first session (69.9% vs 81.8%), mechanical lithotripsy (12.3% vs 13.6%), and complications (11.0% vs 7.6%). Clinical outcomes were also similar between the types of PAD, but the rate of stone removal in first session and the number of sessions were significantly lower and more frequent, respectively, in type B PAD (papilla located near the diverticulum) than controls [23/38 (60.5%) vs 54/66 (81.8%), P = 0.021; and 1 (1-2) vs 1 (1-3), P = 0.037, respectively] and the frequency of pancreatitis was significantly higher in type A PAD (papilla located inside or in the margin of the diverticulum) than in controls (16.1% vs 3.0%, P = 0.047). CONCLUSION: Limited EST plus LBD was an effective and safe procedure for removing choledocholithiasis in patients with PAD. However, some types of PAD should be managed with caution.

AIM:To determine the prevalence of focal lamina cribrosa(LC)defect among patients with pachychoroid disease spectrum(PDS)in the absence of peripapillary ***:This retrospective,cross-sectional study comprised of 180 patients with PDS,including polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy(PCV),central serous chorioretinopathy,and pachychoroidal *** records and optic ner ve head evaluations conducted using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography with enhanced depth imaging were *** a control group,236 patients who underwent ophthalmologic evaluation for vitreous floaters,without obvious ocular disease,were also ***:The mean age of the PDS group,which included 118 male patients(65.6%),was 57.4±11.1 *** was no significant difference between the two groups in age(P=0.710)or sex(P=0.248).Six patients(3.3%)in the PDS group and none in the control group showed focal LC defect(P=0.318).Among the six patients with focal LC defect in the PDS group,four eyes had PCV,one eye was the fellow eye of a PCV eye,and one eye had pachychoroidal ***:Focal LC defect can be defected in patients with PDS in the absence of peripapillar y ***,the prevalence of focal LC defect was not different significantly between PDS patients and those who did not have PDS.
