AIM: To study the anti-inflammatory effects of aqueous extract from Dichroafebrifuga root (AEDF) for suppression in the process of lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced sepsis in the rat liver. METhoDS: The inhibitory effect of AEDF on the alteration of inflammatory proteins was investigated by Western blot and immunohistochemical analysis. RESULTS: Western blot analysis showed that the level of nuclear factor (NF)-κBp65 was markedly up-regulated and (Ⅰ)κBα was down-regulated by LPS (8 mg/kg) challenge. however, AEDF 100 mg/kg inhibited induction of NF-κBp65 and degradation of Ⅰ-κBα in the liver of LPS-challenged rats. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that while the expression of the NF-κBp65, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, and inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS) tended to increase, that of Ⅰ-κBα was decreased in the hepatocytes of rats challenged with LPS. A slight decline of NF-κBp65, TNF-α, and iNOS, but an increase of Ⅰ-κBα were observed in the hepatocytes of the rats pretreated with AEDF. CONCLUSION: AEDF may act as a therapeutic agent for inflammatory disease through a regulation of inflammation-related proteins.

Analysis of liver metastasis after resection for pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma

AIM:To investigate the risk factors affecting the liver metastasis(LM) of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(PDAC) after ***:We retrospectively analyzed 101 PDAC patients who underwent surgical resection at the Samsung Medical Center between January 2000 and December *** one patients with LM were analyzed for the time of metastasis,prognostic factors affecting LM,and ***:LM was found in 40.6%.The median time of the LM(n = 41) was 6.0 ± 4.6 mo and most LM occurred within 1 *** univariate analysis,tumor size,preoperative carbohydrate antigen 19-9,and perineural invasion were factors affecting LM after *** multivariate analysis,tumor size was the most important factor for *** univariate analysis,tumor cell differentiation was significant to LM in low-risk ***:LM after resection of PDAC occurs early and shows poor *** size is the key indicator for LM after resection.

Clinical significance of isolated biliary candidiasis in patients with unresectable cholangiocarcinoma

BACKGROUND: The frequency of isolated biliary candidiasis is increasing in cancer patients. The clinical signiifcance of isolated biliary candidiasis remains unclear. We analyzed the risk factors of biliary candidiasis and outcomes of the patients with unresectable cholangiocarcinoma after percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage (PTBD). METhoDS: Among 430 patients who underwent PTBD between January 2012 and March 2015, 121 patients had unresectable cholangiocarcinoma. Bile and blood samples were collected for consecutive fungal culture. RESULTS: The study cohort included 49 women and 72 men with a median age of 71 years. Multivariate analysis showed that cancer progression (P=0.013), concurrent presence of another microorganism (P=0.010), and previous long-term (>7 days) antibiotic use (P=0.011) were potential risk factors of biliary candidiasis. Chemotherapy was not associated with overall biliary candidiasis (P=0.196), but was signiifcantly related to repeated biliary candidiasis (P=0.011). Patients with isolated biliary candidiasis showed remarkably reduced survival compared with those without (median overall sur-vival (OS): 32 vs 62 days,P=0.011)Subgroup analysis was also performed. Patients with repeated candidiasis had markedly decreased survival compared with those with transient candi-diasis (median OS: 30 vs 49 days,P=0.046). Biliary candidiasis was identiifed as a poor prognostic factor by univariate and multivariate analyses (P=0.033). Four cases of repeated can-didiasis (4/19, 21%) showedCandida species in consecutive blood culture until the end of the study, but others showed no candidemia. CONCLUSIONS: Isolated biliary candidiasis may be associ-ated with poor prognosis in patients with unresectable chol-angiocarcinoma. Especially, repeated biliary candidiasis may have the possibility of progression to candidemia. We suggest that biliary dilatation treatment or antifungal agents might be helpful for patients with biliary candidiasis.

User Recognition System Based on Spectrogram Image Conversion Using EMG Signals

Recently,user recognitionmethods to authenticate personal identity has attracted significant attention especially with increased availability of various internet of things(IoT)services through fifth-generation technology(5G)based mobile *** EMG signals generated inside the body with unique individual characteristics are being studied as a part of nextgeneration user recognition ***,there is a limitation when applying EMG signals to user recognition systems as the same operation needs to be repeated while maintaining a constant strength of muscle over ***,it is necessary to conduct research on multidimensional feature transformation that includes changes in frequency features over *** this paper,we propose a user recognition system that applies EMG signals to the short-time fourier transform(STFT),and converts the signals into EMG spectrogram images while adjusting the time-frequency resolution to extract multidimensional *** proposed system is composed of a data pre-processing and normalization process,spectrogram image conversion process,and final classification *** experimental results revealed that the proposed EMG spectrogram image-based user recognition system has a 95.4%accuracy performance,which is 13%higher than the EMGsignal-based *** a user recognition accuracy improvement was achieved by using multidimensional features,in the time-frequency domain.

There have been ever-growing demands to develop advanced electrocatalysts for renewable energy conversion over the past *** a promising platform for advanced electrocatalysts,reduced graphene oxide(rGO)has attracted substantial research interests in a variety of electrochemical energy conversion *** versatile utility is mainly attributed to unique physical and chemical properties,such as high specific surface area,tunable electronic structure,and the feasibility of structural modification and ***,a comprehensive discussion is provided upon recent advances in the material preparation,characterization,and the catalytic activity of rGO-based electrocatalysts for various electrochemical energy conversion reactions(water splitting,CO2 reduction reaction,N2 reduction reaction,and O2 reduction reaction).Major advantages of rGO and the related challenges for enhancing their catalytic performance are addressed.

Development of a skill assessment tool for the Korea operational oceanographic system

A standard skill assessment （SA） tool was developed and implemented to evaluate the performance of op- erational forecast models in the Korea operational oceanographic system. The SA tool provided a robust way to assess model skill in the system by comparing predictions and observations, and involved the com- putation of multiple skill metrics including correlation and error skills. User- and system-based acceptance criteria of skill metrics were applied to determine whether predictions were acceptable for the system. To achieve this, the tool produced a time series comparison plot, a skill score table, and an advanced sum- marized diagram to effectively demonstrate the multiple skill scores. Moreover, the SA was conducted to evaluate both atmospheric and hydrodynamic forecast variables. For the atmospheric variables, acceptable error criteria were preferable to acceptable correlation criteria over short timescales, since the mean square error overwhelmed the observation variance. Conversely, for the hydrodynamic variables, acceptable root mean square percentage error （e.g., perms） criteria were preferable to acceptable error （e.g., erms） criteria owing to the spatially variable tidal intensity around the Korean Peninsula. Furthermore, the SA indicated that predetermined acceptance error criteria were appropriate to satisfy a target central frequency （fc） for which errors fell within the specified limits （i.e., the .fc equals 70%）.

Clinical advantages of single port laparoscopic hepatectomy

AIM To evaluate the clinical advantages of single-port laparoscopic hepatectomy(SPLH) compare to multiport laparoscopic hepatectomy(MPLH).METhoDS We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 246 patients who underwent laparoscopic liver resection between January 2008 and December 2015 at our hospital. We divided the surgical technique into two groups; SPLH and MPLH. We performed laparoscopic liver resection for both benign and malignant disease. Major hepatectomy such as right and left hepatectomy was also done with sufficient disease-free margin. The operative time, the volume of blood loss, transfusion rate, and the conversion rate to MPLH or open surgery was evaluated. The post-operative parameters included the meal start date after operation, the number of postoperative days spent in the hospital, and surgical complications was also *** Of the 246 patients, 155 patients underwent SPLH and 91 patients underwent MPLH. Conversion rate was 22.6% in SPLH and 19.8% in MPLH(P = 0.358). We performed major hepatectomy, which was defined as resection of more than 2 sections, in 13.5% of patients in the SPLH group and in 13.3% of patients in the MPLH group(P = 0.962). Mean operative timewas 136.9 ± 89.2 min in the SPLH group and 231.2 ± 149.7 min in the MPLH group(P how a significant difference(0.84 ± 0.84 cm in SPLH vs 1.04 ± 1.22 cm in MPLH, P = 0.704). Enteral feeding was started earlier in the SPLH group(1.06 ± 0.27 d after operation) than in the MPLH group(1.63 ± 1.27 d)(P hospital stay after operation was non-significantly shorter in the SPLH group than in the MPLH group(7.82 ± 2.79 d vs 7.97 ± 3.69 d, P = 0.744). The complication rate was not significantly different(P = 0.397) and there was no major perioperative complication or mortality case in both groups. CONCLUS

Effects of Cr interlayer on mechanical and tribological properties of Cr-Al-Si-N nanocomposite coating

Cr-A1-Si-N coatings were deposited on SUS 304 substrate by a hybrid coating system. A Cr interlayer was introduced between Cr-A1-Si-N coating and SUS 304 substrate to improve the coating adherence. The effects of Cr interlayer on the microhardness, adhesion, and tribological behavior of Cr-A1-Si-N coatings were systematically investigated. The results indicate that the microhardness of the Cr-A1-Si-N coatings gradually deceases with increasing thickness of Cr interlayers. The adhesion between Cr-A1-Si-N and SUS 304 substrate is improved by addition of the Cr interlayers. A peak critical load of-50 N is observed for the coating containing Cr interlayer of 60 nm as compared - 20 N for the coating without Cr interlayer. The thicker Cr interlayers result in reduced critical load values. Moreover, the wear resistance of the Cr-AI-Si-N coatings is greatly enhanced by introducing the Cr interlayer with thickness of 60 nm in spite of the decreased microhardness. The friction coefficient of the coating system is also moderately reduced.

Observational Diagnosis of Cloud Phase in the Winter Antarctic Atmosphere for Parameterizations in Climate Models

The cloud phase composition of cold clouds in the Antarctic atmosphere is explored using data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer （MODIS） and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization （CALIOP） instruments for the period 2000-2006. We used the averaged fraction of liquid-phase clouds out of the total cloud amount at the cloud tops since the value is comparable in the two measurements. MODIS data for the winter months （June, July, and August） reveal liquid cloud fraction out of the total cloud amount significantly decreases with decreasing cloud-top temperature below 0°C. In addition, the CALIOP vertical profiles show that below the ice clouds, low-lying liquid clouds are distributed over ～20% of the area. With increasing latitude, the liquid cloud fraction decreases as a function of the local temperature. The MODIS-observed relation between the cloud-top liquid fraction and cloud-top temperature is then applied to evaluate the cloud phase parameterization in climate models, in which condensed cloud water is repartitioned between liquid water and ice on the basis of the grid point temperature. It is found that models assuming overly high cut-offs （ -40°C） for the separation of ice clouds from mixed-phase clouds may significantly underestimate the liquid cloud fraction in the winter Antarctic atmosphere. Correction of the bias in the liquid cloud fraction would serve to reduce the large uncertainty in cloud radiative effects.

Rapid Preparation of Monolithic Columns for Capillary Electrochromatography Separation

Fritless packed silica gel columns were prepared using sol-gel technology, The part of a 75 μm i.d. capillary was filled with a mixture of methacryloxypropyltrimethoxysilane, toluene and hydrochloric acid. Four different photoinitiators such as benzoin methyl ether, Irgacure 819, Irgacure 1700 and Irgacure 1800 were added in the presence or absence of sodium dodecyl sulfate during the polymerization process. The above eight solutions were irradiated at 365 nm about 5-10 min to prepare the porous monolithic sol-gel columns by a one-step process.
