Structural deformation and fault activity of the Tan-Lu Fault zone in the Bohai Sea since the late Pleistocene

The Tan-Lu Fault zone (TLFZ) is a significant fractural zone in eastern china and also a seismicity belt in North china. Based on total 4.00-km-long shallow penetrated single seismic data with high-resolution, structural deformation and fault activity of the TLFZ in the Bohai Sea since the late Pleistocene are discussed in detail. The results show that the TLFZ with a discontinuous distribution and a general NNE-trending consists of 14.active subfaults with an NNE or NE strike in the Bohai Sea. Seismic data reveal that deformation zones along the subfaults in the central Bohai Sea and the Laizhou Bay are wider and more complex than those in the Liaodong Gulf. Related folds and lots of secondary normal faults which are characterized by nearly vertical fault planes and a same or reverse dip construct the fractural zone in the Laizhou Bay and the central Bohai Sea. Usually, micro sym-metrical grabens develop on the top of anticlines. In the Liaodong Gulf, subfault fractural zones usually consist of secondary normal faults with the same inclination or opposite inclination. Ages of seismic sequences and cutting relation between subfaults and seismic sequences suggest that the latest faulting age of the TLFZ is the end of the late Pleistocene in the Liaodong Gulf and the early Holocene in the Laizhou Bay and the central Bohai Sea. There is a good match between distribution of earthquakes and that of the subfaults in the Laizhou Bay and the central Bohai. Statistical result shows that total vertical offset of the TLFZ since the late Pleistocene ranges from 6 to 11 m. On the basis of offsets of the subfaults, the vertical slip rate is calculated and results show that average vertical slip rates in the central Bohai Sea are larger than those in the Liaodong Gulf and the Laizhou Bay. Slip rates more than 0.06 mm/a during 2.-10 ka B.P. and 85-65 ka B.P. are larger than those in other stages. The TLFZ was mainly dominated by tensional normal component since the late Pleistocene

Discussion on moment tensor solution and seismogenic structure of Ruichang-Yangxin earthquake on 10 September 2.11

Ruichang-Yangxin earthquake is another moderate earthquake in Yangxin-Jiujiang area since 2.05 Jiujiang-Ruichang M5.7 earthquake. In order to more understand the seismic activities in this area, we study the moment tensor solution and the seismogenic structure of the Ruichang-Yangxin earthquake. Precise earthquake relocation shows that the mainshock occurred on the southwestern part of the NE-trending fault and aftershocks are distributed not only along the NE-trending fault but also along its conjugated NW-trending fault. By comprehensive analysis on the earthquake distribution, characteristics of isoseismal curve, focal mechanism, and regional structure characteristics, it is inferred that this earthquake is caused by the NE-trending Tanlu fault. In addition, it has close relationship with the conjugated NW-trending fault as well. Many researches have shown that the junction area is the earthquake-prone area, and should be paid more attention to. And our study also proves this viewpoint.

An obvious characteristic of the baroclinic large-scale motions in the equatorial ocean is that the meridional scale H of motion is far smaller than the zonal scale L. The scaling of motion carefully with this striking characteristic in this paper results in two conclusions, i. e., the Coriolis terms associated with the horizontal component of the rotation vector cannot be neglected in the governing equations; and the use of the absence of heating is not suitable to the equatorial region. In this paper the equatorial β-plane nondimensional governing equations with the small parametersδ_0 andδ_1 have been Obtained.

Responses of soil respiration in non-growing seasons to environmental factors in a maize agroecosystem,Northeast china

Based on continuous three-year measurements (from 2.04.to 2.07) of eddy covariance and related environmental factors, environmental controls on variation in soil respiration (Rs) during non-growing season were explored in a maize agroecosystem in Northeast china. Our results indicated that during non-growing seasons, daily Rs was 1.08-4.08 g CO2.m-2.d-1, and the lowest occurred in late November. The average Rs of non-growing season was 4.6.06 ± 2..01 g CO2.m-2. accounting for 11% of the gross primary production (GPP) of the growing season. Additionally, at monthly scale, the lowest value of Rs appeared in January or February. From the beginning to the end of non-growing season, daily Rs tended to decrease first, and then increase to the highest. There was a significant quadratic curve relationship between Rs and soil temperature at 10 cm depth when soil temperature was more than 0°C (P2.7%-11.8%. Rs in non-growing season can account for 2..4. of Rs in growing season, indicating that it plays a critical role in assessing the carbon budget in maize agroecosystem, Northeast china.

The inhibitory effects of five berberines alkaloids (BAs) from rhizoma ofCoptis chinensis Franch,a traditional Chinese medicinal (TCM) herb,on Bacillus shigae(***)growth were investigated by *** power-time curves of *** with and without BAswere acquired;meanwhile,the extent and duration of inhibitory effects on the metabolism wereevaluated by growth rate constants (k1,k2.,half inhibitory ratio (IC50),maximum heat output(P_(max)),and peak time (t_p).The values of k1 and k2.of a shigae in the presence of the five BAsdecreased with the increasing concentrations of ***,P_(max) was reduced,and the value oft_p increased with increasing concentrations of the five *** inhibitory activity varied withdifferent ***50 of the five BAs was respectively 75 mu g/mL for berberine,90 ng/mL forcoptisine,115 mu g/mL for palmatine,2.0 mu g/mL for epiberberine,and 4.0 mu g/mL *** sequence of antimicrobial activity of the five BAs:berberine > coptisine >palmatine > epiberberine > *** functional groups methylenedioxy at C2.and C3 on phenylring improve antimicrobial activity more strongly than methoxyl at C2.and C3 on ***,the effect of bacteriostasis is not significant with methylenedioxy or methoxyl at C9and C10 on phenyl ring.

Mass Spectrometric Evidence of Heparin Disaccharides for the Catalytic Characterization of A Novel Endolytic Heparinase

Heparinase from different sources can eliminate heparin or/and heparan sulfate into various low-molecular weight heparins with different characteristics. Porcine intestinal mucosa heparin was de- graded into a series of oligosaccharides by a novel heparinase from the species Sphingobacterium. Disaccha- ride components from the digests were separated and purified by ultrafiltration and HPLC. Five major peaks appeared as three types according to their retention time. The mass spectrometry of peak I mainly gave the non-sulfated disaccharide with the mass of 379 Da. Peak II and III were indicated as two major monosulfated disaccharides with molecular mass of 4.7 and 4.9 Da respectively. Moreover, the peak III represented an N- acetyl disaccharide. Both peak IV and V showed the same mass of 4.6 Da, hinting that they were disulfate- substituted disaccharides. No trisulfate-substituted disaccharides were detected in the mixture of the heparin digest though they were abundant in the heparin structure. The results revealed that the heparinase might specifically cut the sites with low sulfated domain in heparin.

Debating about the climate warming

Debating about the climate warming is reviewed. Discussions have focused on the validity of the temperature reconstruction for the last millennium made by Mann et al. Arguments against and for the reconstruction are introduced. Temperature reconstructions by other authors are examined, including the one carried out by Wang et al. in 1996. It is concluded that: (1) Ability of reproducing temperature variability of time scale less than 10 a is limited, so no sufficient evidence proves that the 1990s was the warmest decade, and 1998 was the warmest year over the last millennium. (2. All of the temperature reconstructions by different authors demonstrate the occurrence of the MWP (Medieval Warm Period) and LIA (Little Ice Age) in low frequency band of temperature variations, though the peak in the MWP and trough in LIA varies from one reconstruction to the others. Therefore, terms of MWP and LIA can be used in studies of climate change. (3) The warming from 1975 to 2.00 was significant, but we do not know if it was the strongest for the last millennium, which needs to be proved by more evidence.

Sea surface temperature east of Australia:A predictor of tropical cyclone frequency over the western North Pacific?

The relationship between sea surface temperature (SST) east of Australia and tropical cyclone frequency over the western North Pacific (WNPTCF) is analyzed by use of observation *** WNPTCF from June to October is correlated negatively to spring SST east of *** the spring SST is in the positive phase,a cyclonic circulation anomaly in the upper troposphere and an anticyclonic circulation anomaly in the lower troposphere prevail over the western North Pacific from June to October,concurrent with an anomalous atmospheric subsidence and an enlarged vertical zonal wind *** conditions are unfavorable for tropical cyclone genesis,and thus WNPTCF *** negative phase of the spring SST east of Australia leads to more tropical cyclones over the western North *** spring SST east of Australia may give rise to simultaneous change in tropical atmospheric circulation via the teleconnection wave train,and then subsequently affect atmospheric circulation variation over the western North Pacific.
