Multi-scale Spatial Patterns and Influencing Factors of Rural Poverty:A Case Study in the Liupan Mountain Region, Gansu Province, China

The important role of spatial scale in exploring the geography of poverty as well as its policy implications has been noticed but with limited knowledge. To improve such limited understanding, we mainly investigated the spatial patterns and influencing factors of rural poverty(indicated by poor population and poverty incidence) at three different administrative levels in the Liupan Mountain Region, one of the fourteen poorest regions in China. Our results show that from a global perspective, poor areas are clustered significantly at the county-, township-, and village-level, and more greatly at a lower level. Locally, there is spatial mismatch among poverty hotspots detected not only by the same indicator at different levels but also by different indicators at the same level. A scale effect can be found in the influencing factors of rural poverty. That is, the number of significant factors increases, but the degree of their association with poverty incidence decreases at a lower level. Such scale effect indicates that poverty incidence at lower levels may be affected by more complex factors, including not only the new local ones but also the already appeared non-local ones at higher levels. However, the natural conditions tend to play a scale-independent role to poverty incidence. In response to such scale-dependent patterns and factors, anti-poverty policies can be 1) a multilevel monitoring system to reduce incomplete or even misleading single-level information and understanding; 2) the village-based targeting strategy to increase the targeting efficiency and alleviate the mentioned spatial mismatch; 3) more flexible strategies responding to the local impoverishing factors, and 4) different task emphasises for multilevel policymakers to achieve the common goal of poverty reduction.

This paper examines the impacts of information about COVID-19 on pig farmers'production willingness by using endorsement experiments and follow-up surveys conducted in 2020 and 2021 in *** results show that,first,farmers were less willing to scale up production when they received information about *** information in 2020 that the second wave of COVID-19 might occur without a vaccine reduced farmers'willingness to scale up by 13.4%,while the information in 2021 that COVID-19 might continue to spread despite the introduction of vaccine reduced farmers'willingness by 4.4%.Second,farmers whose production was affected by COVID-19 were considerably less willing to scale up,given the access to COVID-19 ***,farmers'production willingness can predict their actual production behavior.

An accurate driving cycle prediction is a vital function of an onboard energy management strategy(EMS)for a battery/ultracapacitor hybrid energy storage system(HESS)in electric *** this paper,we address the requirements to achieve better EMS performances for a ***,a long short-term niemory・based method is proposed to predict driving cycles under the framework of a model predictive control(MPC)***,the performances of three EMSs based on fuzzy logic,MPC,and dynamic programming are systematically evaluated and *** online implementation,the MPC-based EMS can alleviate the stress on the battery in the HESS and significantly reduce energy dissipation by up to 15.3% in comparison with the fuzzy logic-based ***,the impact of battery aging on EMS performances is explored;it indicates that battery aging consciousness can slightly extend battery ***,a hardware-in-the-loop test platform is established to verify the effectiveness of the MPC-based EMS for the power allocation of a HESS in electric vehicles.

The conventional method for determining growth kinetics of microbial consortia relies on the total biomass *** may be inaccurate for substrates that are uncommon in nature and can only be degraded by a small portion of the microbial community.1,4-dioxane,an emerging contaminant,is an example of such *** this work,we evaluated an improved method for determining the growth kinetics of a 1,4-dioxane-degrading microbial *** the improved method,we considered only bacterial taxa whose concentration increase correlated to 1,4-dioxane concentration decrease in duplicate microcosm *** PEST(Parameter Estimation),a modelindependent parameter estimator,the kinetic constants were estimated by fitting the Monod kineticsbased simulation results to the experimental data that consisted of the concentrations of 1,4-dioxane and the considered bacterial *** estimated kinetic constants were evaluated by comparing the simulation results with experimental results from another set of microcosm *** evaluation was quantified by the sum of squared relative residual,which was four orders of magnitude lower for the improved method than the conventional *** further dividing the considered bacterial taxa into oligotrophs and copiotrophs,the sum of squared relative residual further decreased.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC)still lacks effective targeted ***,exploring novel and robust molecular targets is critical for improving the clinical outcome of ***,we reported that the expression levels of family with sequence similarity 64,member A(FAM64A)were significantly higher in HNSCC tissues and cell *** addition,FAM64A overexpression was found to be strongly associated with an unfavorable prognosis of *** in vitro and in vivo evidence showed that FAM64A depletion suppressed the malignant activities of HNSCC cells,and vice ***,we found that the FAM64A level was progressively increased from normal to dysplastic to cancerous tissues in a carcinogenic 4-nitroquinoline-1-oxide mouse ***,a physical interaction was found between FAM64A and forkhead box protein M1(FOXM1)in HNSCC ***64A promoted HNSCC tumorigenesis not only by enhancing the transcriptional activity of FOXM1,but also,more importantly,by modulating FOXM1 expression via the autoregulation ***,a positive correlation between FAM64A and FOXM1 was found in multiple independent *** together,our findings reveal a previously unknown mechanism behind the activation of FOXM1 in HNSCC,and FAM64A might be a promising molecular therapeutic target for treating HNSCC.

BACKGROUND Screening colonoscopies are routinely performed and have low occurrences of adverse events such as perforation,bleeding,infection,and post-polypectomy *** device related adverse events are rarely reported in the *** SUMMARY We report a case of a 51-year-old patient without past medical history who presented for her first screening *** patient was thought to have friable mucosa in the cecum and oozed upon water irrigation during screening *** was later identified that the colonoscope used during the index procedure had malfunctioned and produced a pin-point water jet which damaged the colon mucosa of *** maintenance service identified a piece of rubber fragment lodged in the instrument component at the tip of the scope,resulting in high pressure water *** colonoscopy with a functioning colonoscope confirmed normal colon mucosa without *** This is the first report of mucosa injury from a colonoscope water jet *** should recognize the potential for endoscopic malfunction.

Thalidomide for refractory gastrointestinal bleeding from vascular malformations in patients with significant comorbidities

BACKGROUND Refractory gastrointestinal bleeding(GIB)secondary to gastrointestinal vascular malformations(GIVM)such as gastrointestinal angiodysplasia(GIAD)and gastric antral vascular ectasia(GAVE)remains challenging to treat when endoscopic therapy *** thalidomide has been suggested as a treatment option for refractory *** To determine the outcome of patients treated with thalidomide for refractory GIB due to *** IRB approved,single center,retrospective review of electronic medical records from January 2012 to November *** age>18 years old,who had>3 episodes of GIB refractory to medical or endoscopic therapy,and who had been treated with thalidomide for at least 3 mo were *** primary endpoint was recurrence of GIB 6 mo after initiation of *** Fifteen patients were included in the study,all with significant cardiac,hepatic,or renal *** cause of GIB was GIAD in 10 patients and GAVE in 5 *** patients were lost to follow *** the 13 patients followed,38.5%(n=5)had no recurrent GIB or transfusion requirement after treatment with ***,84.6%(n=11)of patients had a reduction in transfusion requirements and hospitalizations for *** was discontinued in 2 patients due to cost(n=1)and medication interaction(n=1).Reported adverse reactions included fatigue(n=3),neuropathy(n=2),dizziness(n=1),and constipation(n=1).Six patients died during follow up due to unknown cause(n=4)and sepsis(n=2).CONCLUSION Thalidomide appears to be an effective treatment for refractory GIB due to GIAD or GAVE in a Western population with significant comorbidities.
