Observation of gapless corner modes of photonic crystal slabs in synthetic translation dimensions

Second-order topological photonic crystals support localized corner modes that deviate from the conventional bulk-edge correspondence.However,the frequency shift of corner modes spanning the photonic band gap has not been experimentally reported.Here,we observe the gapless corner modes of photonic crystal slabs within a parameter space by considering translation as an additional synthetic dimension.These corner modes,protected by topological pumping in synthetic translation dimensions,are found to exist independently of the specific corner configuration.The gapless corner modes are experimentally imaged via the near-field scanning measurement and validated numerically by full-wave simulations.We propose a topological rainbow with gradient translation,demonstrating the ability to extract and separate specific frequency components of light into different spatial locations.Our work contributes to the advancement of topological photonics and provides valuable insights into the exploration of gapless corner modes in synthetic dimensions.

Background:With elderly people comprising a growing share of the population,landscape planners need to consider their specific requirements to enhance the opportunities for them to engage in nature-based recreation(NBR).However,few studies have spatially assessed the recreation potential,demand,and opportunities for elderly people in cities.Thus,this paper aimed to spatially model and investigate the NBR opportunities for and demand of elderly people in urban areas.A spatial framework based on the ESTIMAP recreation model was developed,considering special factors to better reflect elderly people’s preferences regarding NBR at the city scale.In particular,NBR opportunities were assessed considering landscape aesthetics,various types of facilities,and proximity.The street network was used to understand elderly people’s walking behaviours regarding green spaces and related facilities.Results:A case study in Hannover,Germany,demonstrated the applicability of the proposed method.The results illustrate the spatial heterogeneity of recreation options for the elderly.Only parts of Hannover’s green spaces offer high recreation opportunities for elderly people.Many of the existing green spaces lack diverse landscape compo-nents and sufficient supply of facilities,resulting in a compromise to aesthetics and recreational opportunities.Conclusions:The proposed method contributes to research on spatial planning and environmental justice by incorporating vulnerable groups’preferences and needs in spatially assessing NBR.The planning implications highlight pocket gardens and greenways connecting communities and parks as development opportunities in the city.

Bloch electrons in multiorbital systems carry quantum geometric information characteristic of their wavevector-dependent interorbital mixing.The geometric nature impacts electromagnetic responses,and this effect carries over to the superconducting state,which receives a geometric contribution to the superfluid weight.In this paper,we show that this contribution could become negative under certain appropriate circumstances.This may facilitate the stabilization of Cooper pairings with real space phase modulation,i.e.,the pair density wave order,as we demonstrate through two-orbital model Bogoliubov de-Gennes mean-field calculations.The quantum geometric effect therefore constitutes an intrinsic mechanism for the formation of such a novel phase of matter in the absence of external magnetic field.

We propose a line search exact penalty method with bi-object strategy for nonlinear semidefinite programming.At each iteration,we solve a linear semidefinite programming to test whether the linearized constraints are consistent or not.The search direction is generated by a piecewise quadratic-linear model of the exact penalty function.The penalty parameter is only related to the information of the current iterate point.The line search strategy is a penalty-free one.Global and local convergence are analyzed under suitable conditions.We finally report some numerical experiments to illustrate the behavior of the algorithm on various degeneracy situations.

Software defect prediction(SDP)is used to perform the statistical analysis of historical defect data to find out the distribution rule of historical defects,so as to effectively predict defects in the new software.However,there are redundant and irrelevant features in the software defect datasets affecting the performance of defect predictors.In order to identify and remove the redundant and irrelevant features in software defect datasets,we propose ReliefF-based clustering(RFC),a clusterbased feature selection algorithm.Then,the correlation between features is calculated based on the symmetric uncertainty.According to the correlation degree,RFC partitions features into k clusters based on the k-medoids algorithm,and finally selects the representative features from each cluster to form the final feature subset.In the experiments,we compare the proposed RFC with classical feature selection algorithms on nine National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA)software defect prediction datasets in terms of area under curve(AUC)and Fvalue.The experimental results show that RFC can effectively improve the performance of SDP.

Sparse code multiple access (SCMA) is the most concerning scheme among non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technologies for 5G wireless communication new interface. Another efficient technique in 5G aimed to improve spectral efficiency for local communications is device-to-device (D2D) communications. Therefore, we utilize the SCMA cellular network coexisting with D2D communications for the connection demand of the Internet of things (IOT), and improve the system sum rate performance of the hybrid network. We first derive the information-theoretic expression of the capacity for all users and find the capacity bound of cellular users based on the mutual interference between cellular users and D2D users. Then we consider the power optimization problem for the cellular users and D2D users jointly to maximize the system sum rate. To tackle the non-convex optimization problem, we propose a geometric programming (GP) based iterative power allocation algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm converges fast and well improves the sum rate performance.

Antimicrobial resistance(AMR)has emerged as a significant challenge in human health.Wastewater treatment plants(WWTPs),acting as a link between human activities and the environment,create ideal conditions for the selection and spread of antibiotic resistance genes(ARGs)and antibioticresistant bacteria(ARB).Unfortunately,current treatment processes are ineffective in removing ARGs,resulting in the release of large quantities of ARB and ARGs into the aquatic environment through WWTP effluents.This,in turn,leads to their dispersion and potential transmission to human through water and the food chain.To safeguard human and environmental health,it is crucial to comprehend the mechanisms by which WWTP effluent discharge influences the distribution and diffusion of ARGs in downstream waterbodies.In this study,we examine the latest researches on the antibiotic resistome in various waterbodies that have been exposed to WWTP effluent,highlighting the key influencing mechanisms.Furthermore,recommendations for future research and management strategies to control the dissemination of ARGs from WWTPs to the environment are provided,with the aim to achieve the“One Health”objective.

Over-sampling algorithm for imbalanced data classification

For imbalanced datasets, the focus of classification is to identify samples of the minority class. The performance of current data mining algorithms is not good enough for processing imbalanced datasets. The synthetic minority over-sampling technique(SMOTE) is specifically designed for learning from imbalanced datasets, generating synthetic minority class examples by interpolating between minority class examples nearby. However, the SMOTE encounters the overgeneralization problem. The densitybased spatial clustering of applications with noise(DBSCAN) is not rigorous when dealing with the samples near the borderline.We optimize the DBSCAN algorithm for this problem to make clustering more reasonable. This paper integrates the optimized DBSCAN and SMOTE, and proposes a density-based synthetic minority over-sampling technique(DSMOTE). First, the optimized DBSCAN is used to divide the samples of the minority class into three groups, including core samples, borderline samples and noise samples, and then the noise samples of minority class is removed to synthesize more effective samples. In order to make full use of the information of core samples and borderline samples,different strategies are used to over-sample core samples and borderline samples. Experiments show that DSMOTE can achieve better results compared with SMOTE and Borderline-SMOTE in terms of precision, recall and F-value.
