Derivation and Global Convergence for Memoryless Non-quasi-Newton Method

In this paper, a new class of memoryless non-quasi-Newton method for solving unconstrained optimization problems is proposed, and the global convergence of this method with inexact line search is proved. Furthermore, we propose a hybrid method that mixes both the memoryless non-quasi-Newton method and the memoryless Perry-Shanno quasi-Newton method. The global convergence of this hybrid memoryless method is proved under mild assumptions. The initial results show that these new methods are efficient for the given test problems. Especially the memoryless non-quasi-Newton method requires little storage and computation, so it is able to efficiently solve large scale optimization problems.

INTRODUCTION In recent years, with the gradual improvement of road construction, the rapid increase of the number of motor vehicles, vehicle emissions and the current poor vehicle performance, poor vehicle maintenance, higher emission factor and so on, air pollution caused by the traffic issues becomes the focus of people attention. The harmful substances are gradually accumulated to atmosphere particles surrounding roads due to dust particles （soil dusts, road dusts, construction dusts）, coal emissions, industrial emissions, vehicle emissions, biomass burning, secondary particles, which has a certain harmful influence to the atmosphere, soil and plants surrounding roads.

Fragile X-related protein 1（FXR1P） is a member of the FXR gene family,which also includes fragile X mental retardation protein and fragile X-related protein 2（FXR2P）.To understand the functions of FXR1P,we screened FXR1P-interacting proteins using a yeast two-hybrid ***1P was fused to pGBKT7 and used as the bait to screen a human fetal brain cDNA *** screening revealed 10 FXR1P-interacting proteins including ***1 encodes Homo sapiens ferritin,heavy polypeptide *** interaction between FXR1P and FTH1 was confirmed by retesting in yeast using both a β-galactosidase assay and growth studies on selective media.A co-immunoprecipitation assay in mammalian cells further confirmed the FXR1P/FTH1 ***,the results revealed that FTH1 colocalized with FXR1P in the cytoplasm around the nucleus in mammalian *** present findings suggest that FXR1P plays an important role in iron metabolism in the brain by interacting with *** provides clues for elucidating the relationship between FXR1P function and fragile X syndrome.

Interactive image segmentation with a regression based ensemble learning paradigm

To achieve fine segmentation of complex natural images, people often resort to an interactive segmentation paradigm, since fully automatic methods often fail to obtain a result consistent with the ground truth. However, when the foreground and background share some similar areas in color, the fine segmentation result of conventional interactive methods usually relies on the increase o f manual labels. This paper presents a novel interactive image segmentation method via a regression-based ensemble model with semi-supervised learning. The task is formulated as a non-linear problem integrating two complementary spline regressors and strengthening the robustness of each regressor via semi-supervised learning. First, two spline regressors with a complementary nature are constructed based on multivariate adaptive regression splines （MARS） and smooth thin plate spline regression （TPSR）. Then, a regressor boosting method based on a clustering hypothesis and semi-supervised learning is proposed to assist the training of MARS and TPSR by using the region segmentation information contained in unlabeled pixels. Next, a support vector regression （SVR） based decision fusion model is adopted to integrate the results of MARS and TPSR. Finally, the GraphCut is introduced and combined with the SVR ensemble results to achieve image segmentation. Extensive experimental results on benchmark datasets of BSDS500 and Pascal VOC have demonstrated the effectiveness of our method, and the com- parison with experiment results has validated that the proposed method is comparable with the state-of-the-art methods for in- teractive natural image segmentation.

Correlation between photoreceptor injury-regeneration and behavior in a zebrafish model

Direct exposure to intensive visible light can lead to solar retinopathy, including macular injury. The signs and symptoms include central scotoma, metamorphopsia, and decreased vision. However, there have been few studies examining retinal injury due to intensive light stimulation at the cellular level. Neural network arrangements and gene expression patterns in zebrafish photoreceptors are similar to those observed in humans, and photoreceptor injury in zebrafish can induce stem cell-based cellular regeneration. Therefore, the zebrafish retina is considered a useful model for studying photoreceptor injury in humans. In the current study, the central retinal photoreceptors of zebrafish were selectively ablated by stimulation with high-intensity light. Retinal injury, cell proliferation and regeneration of cones and rods were assessed at 1, 3 and 7 days post lesion with immunohistochemistry and in situ hybridization. Additionally, a light/dark box test was used to assess zebrafish behavior. The results revealed that photoreceptors were regenerated by 7 days after the light-induced injury. However, the regenerated cells showed a disrupted arrangement at the lesion site. During the injury-regeneration process, the zebrafish exhibited reduced locomotor capacity, weakened phototaxis and increased movement angular velocity. These behaviors matched the morphological changes of retinal injury and regeneration in a number of ways. This study demonstrates that the zebrafish retina has a robust capacity for regeneration. Visual impairment and stress responses following high-intensity light stimulation appear to contribute to the alteration of behaviors.

Background Obstructive sleep apnea （OSA） can cause cognitive dysfunction and may be a reversible cause of cognitive loss in patients with Alzheimer＇s disease （AD）. Chronic exposure to intermittent hypoxia （IH）, such as encountered in OSA, is marked by neurodegenerative changes in rat brain. We investigated the change of thioredoxin （Trx）, spatial learning and memory in rats exposed to chronic intermittent hypoxia （CIH）. Methods Forty healthy male Sprague-Dawley （SD） rats were randomly divided into four groups of ten each： a CIH＋normal saline （CIH＋NS group）, a N-acetylcystein-treated CIH （CIH＋NAC） group, a sham CIH group （sham CIH＋NS）, and a sham NAC-treated sham CIH （CIH＋NAC） group. Spatial learning and memory in each group was assessed with the Morris water maze. Real-time PCR and Western blotting were used to examine mRNA and protein expression of Trx in the hippocampus tissue. The terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP-nick end-labeling （TUNEL） method was used to detect the apoptotic cells of the hippocampus CA1 region. Results CIH-rats showed impaired spatial learning and memory in the Morris water maze, including longer mean latencies for the target platform, reduced numbers of passes over the previous target platform and a smaller percentage of time spent in the target quadrant. Trx mRNA and protein levels were significantly decreased in the CIH-hippocampus, meanwhile, an elevated apoptotic index revealed apoptosis of hippocampal neurons of rats exposed to CIH. The rats, which acted better in the Morris water maze, showed higher levels of the Trx mRNA and protein in the hippocampus; apoptotic index of the neurons in the hippocampus of each group was negatively correlated with the Trx mRNA and protein levels. Conclusion The Trx deficit likely plays an important role in the impaired spatial learning and memory in the rats exposed to CIH and may work through the apoptosis of neurons in the hippocampus.

Enhanced photodegradation of phenolic compounds by adding TiO_2 to soil in a rotary reactor

Photodegradation ofpentachlorophenol （PCP） and p-nitrophenol （PNP） in soil was carried out in a designed rotary reactor, which can provide the soil particles with continually uniform irradiation, and on a series of thin soil layers. TiO2, as a kind of environmental friendly photocatalyst, was introduced to the soil to enhance the processes. Compared with that on the soil layers, photodegradation of PCP at initial concentration of 60 mg/kg was improved dramatically in the rotary reactor no matter whether TiO2 was added, with an increase of 3.0 times in the apparent first-order rate constants. The addition of 1 wt% TiO2 furthered the improvement by 1.4 times. Without addition of TiO2, PNP （initial concentration of 60 mg/kg） photodegradation rate in the rotary reactor was similar to that on the soil layers. When 1 wt% additional TiO2 was added, PNP photodegradation was enhanced obviously, and the enhancement in the rotary reactor was 2 times of that on the soil layers, which may be attributed to the higher frequency of the contact between PNP on soil particles and the photocatalyst. The effect of soil pH and initial concentrations of the target compounds on the photodegradation in the rotary reactor was investigated. The order of the degradation rate at different soil pH was relative to the aggregation of soil particles during mixing in the rotary reactor. Photodegradation of PCP and PNP at different initial concentrations showed that addition of TiO2 to enhance the photodegradation was more suitable for contaminated soil with higher concentration of PCP, while was effective for contaminated soil at each PNP concentration tested in our study.
