Effect of Graphene Nanoribbons (TexasPEG) on locomotor function recovery in a rat model of lumbar spinal cord transection

A sharply transected spinal cord has been shown to be fused under the accelerating influence of membrane fusogens such as polyethylene glycol （PEG）（GEMINI protocol）. Previous work provided evidence that this is in fact possible. Other fusogens might improve current results. In this study, we aimed to assess the effects of PEGylated graphene nanoribons （PEG-GNR, and called ＂TexasPEG＂ when prepared as lwt% dispersion in PEG600） versus placebo （saline） on locomotor function recovery and cellular level in a rat model of spinal cord transection at lumbar segment 1 （L1） level. In vivo and in vitro experiments （n -- 10 per experiment） were designed. In the in vivo experiment, all rats were submitted to full spinal cord transection at L1 level. Five weeks later, behavioral assessment was performed using the Basso Beattie Bresnahan （BBB） locomotor rating scale. Immunohistochemical staining with neuron marker neurofilament 200 （NF200） antibody and astrocyt- ic scar marker glial fibrillary acidic protein （GFAP） was also performed in the injured spinal cord. In the in vitro experiment, the effects of TexasPEG application for 72 hours on the neurite outgrowth of SH-SYSY cells were observed under the inverted microscope. Results of both in vivo and in vitro experiments suggest that TexasPEG reduces the formation of glial scars, promotes the regeneration of neurites, and thereby contributes to the recovery of locomotor function of a rat model of spinal cord transfection.

Binding of cry δ-endotoxins to brush border membrane vesicles of Helicoverpa armigera and Helicoverpa punctigera （Lepidoptera： Noctuidae）

The relatively low susceptibility ofHelicoverpa armigera to crylAc, its history of resistance to chemical insecticides and the seasonal decline in expression of crylAc in transgenic cotton necessitated the development of cotton expressing two insecticidal proteins to provide sustainable control of this multinational pest. To manage the resistance issue, it was essential that the second insecticidal protein have a significantly different mode of action to crylAc. A common feature of resistance to crylA proteins in several species as well as H. armigera has been a change in the binding site. A study of binding sites for some cry proteins in the brush border membrane vesicles （BBMV） ofH. armigera and Helicoverpa punctigera was undertaken. The binding affinity for crylAc was higher than for crylAb, matching their relative toxicities, and crylAc and crylAb were found to share at least one binding site in both I-1. armigera and I-1. punctigera. However cry2Aa did not compete with crylAc for binding and so could be used in transgenic cotton in combination with crylAc to control H. armigera and manage resistance. Variation in the susceptibilities of three different H. armigera strains to crylAc correlated with the parameter Bmax/kcom.

Azo dyes are widely applied in the textile industry but are not entirely consumed during the dyeing process and can thus be discharged to the environment in ***,azo dyes can be degraded using various electron donors,and in this paper,Acid Orange 7(AO7)degradation performance is investigated using methane(cH4)as the sole electron *** has multiple sources and is readily available and *** using ^(13)c-labeled isotopes showed that AO7 degradation was coupled with anaerobic oxidation of methane(AOM)and,subsequently,affected by the initial concentrations of *** concentrations of AO7 could inhibit the activity of microorganisms,which was confirmed by the long-term performance of AO7 degradation,with maximum removal rates of 8.94 mg/(L·d)in a batch reactor and 280 mg/(L·d)in a hollow fiber membrane bioreactor(HfMBR).High-throughput sequencing using 16S rRNA genes showed that candidatus Methanoperedens,affiliated to ANME-2d,dominated the microbial community in the batch reactor and ***,the relative abundance of Proteobacteria bacteria(Phenylobacterium,Pseudomonas,and Geothermobacter)improved after AO7 *** outcome suggested that ANME-2d alone,or acting synergistically with partner bacteria,played a key role in the process of AO7 degradation coupled with AOM.

In the Peninsular Malaysia and Northern Borneo island of Malaysia, various rich indigenous leafy vegetables and fruits grow and contribute to the nutritional and dietary values of the population. They have high water contents, thus, naturally vulnerable to rapid food spoilage. Food preservation and processing play a vital role in the inhibition of food pathogens in fruits and vegetables that are prevalent in Malaysia. Lactic acid fermentation is generally a local-based bioprocess, among the oldest form and well-known for food-processing techniques among indigenous people there. The long shelf life of fermented vegetables and fruits improves their nutritional values and antioxidant potentials. Fermented leaves and vegetables can be utilized as a potential source of probiotics as they are host for several lactic acid bacteria such as Lactobacillus confusus, Weissella paramesenteroides, Enterococcus faecalis, Lactobacillus plantarum, Lactobacillus buchneri, Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus pentosus, Pediococcus acidilactici, Pediococcus pentosaceus and Leuconostoc mesenteroides. These strains may be more viable in metabolic systems whereby they can contribute to a substantial increase in essential biologically active element than industrial starter cultures. This review is aimed to address some essential fermented fruits and vegetables in Malaysia and their remarkable reputations as a potential sources of natural probiotics.

Methods:Thirty-seven unaffected first-degree relatives of patients with major depression and 52 healthy controls were recruited for this *** were all administered a self-reported measure of anhedonic symptoms and a computer task capturing reward *** the computer task,a negative feedback was used as a stressor manipulation to produce stress and the study further explored how stress influenced the development of hedonic capacity. Results:compared with healthy controls,unaffected first degree relatives of patients with major depression displayed significantly more reduction of reward response in the end of experimental *** reward response was associated with greater state and trait anhedonia in unaffected first degree relatives under baseline condition and relatives with a high level of trait consummately anhedonia displayed blunted change of response bias at the end of the stress condition. conclusions:These findings suggest that unaffected first-degree relatives of patients with major depression have deficits in sustaining maximal reward response to reward *** is especially associated with the inability to up-regulate the pursuit of rewards under stress.

Effect of particle stress tensor in simulations of dense gas-particle flows in fluidized beds

A two-fluid model based on the kinetic theory of granular flow for the rapid-flow regime and the coulomb friction law for the quasi-static regime is applied to predict the hydrodynamics of dense gas-particle flow in a three-dimensional fluidized bed. Two different models for the particle stress tensor that use different constitutive equations in the elastic-inertial regime are examined to assess their ability to predict bed dynamics. To understand how particle stress models affect structural features of the flow, a quantitative analysis is performed on some important aspects of the mechanics of bubbling beds that have received relatively little attention in the literature. Accordingly, different flow regimes are identified in the context of fluidized beds through the dimensionless inertial number, and the main characteristics of each regime are discussed. In addition, how the particle stress tensor manifests itself in the bubble characteristics, natural frequency of the bed, and particle Reynolds stress are investigated, all of which help to better understand the complex dynamics of the fluidized bed. The numerical results are validated against pub- lished experimental data and demonstrate the significant role of the stress tensor in the elastic-inertial regime.

crude decoction, aqueous and ethanolic extracts of two medicinal plants （Psidiura guajava and Diospyros raespiliformis）, widely used in the central plateau of Burkina Faso to treat many diseases were evaluated for their antagonistic effects on caffeine induced calcium release from sarcoplasmic reticulum of rat skeletal muscle cells. These different extracts showed a decrease of caffeine induced calcium release in a dose dependent manner. comparison of the results showed that Psidiura guajava leaf extracts are more active than extracts of Diospyros mespiliformis and that crude decoctions show better inhibitory activity. The observed results could explaine their use as antihypertensive and antidiarrhoeal agents in traditional medicine, by inhibiting intracellular calcium release.

Food and nutrition are essential parts for the management of blood glucose of patients with diabetes and other metabolic *** results of recent human clinical studies have shown that the blood glucose levels change differently in different people in response to the same standardized *** phenomenon shows the challenges to find a one-size-fits-all approach to combat *** the development of technologies,personalized nutrition/precision nutrition has gradually become more practical in order to treat individual *** aim of this review article is to summarize personalized nutrition’s progress and potential in treating the diabetes *** have searched PubMed to identify relevant articles and found that personalized nutrition on multiple factors associated with an individual has started to draw attention to scientifi c *** seminal studies have shown that healthy adults show differential responses of postprandial blood glucose levels to the same standardized *** clinical trials have started to integrate sensor technologies such as continuous glucose monitoring and personal data such as genomic sequences and microbiome to provide personalized nutrition advice,and shown promises in intervention and management of type 2 *** appears that the interplays of diets and genomes,gut microbiome,gut transit time,insulin sensitivity,cultural,social,and economic factors should all be considered to create a personalized treatment for an individual’s chronic metabolic *** probably can be achieved through the integration of personalized nutrition and personalized food intervention with the development of technologies and advances in food and nutrition *** research should be anticipated soon.
