Three linear two-equation turbulence models k- ε, k- ω and k- 1 and a non-linear k- 1 model are used for aerodynamic and thermal turbine flow prediction. The pressure profile in the wake and the heat transfer coefficient on the blade are compared with experimental data. Good agreement is obtained with the linear k-1 model. No significant modifications are observed with the non-linear model. The balance of transport equation terms in the blade wake is also presented. Linear and non-linear k - 1 models are evaluated to predict the threedimensional vortices characterising the turbine flows. The simulations show that the passage vortex is the main origin of the losses.

In urban environments characterized by rich diversity across language, migration status, demographic profiles, and usage of different forms of media, there can be significant challenges to ensuring that particular disaster risk reduction(DRR) communications reach those potentially affected. This article presents a study with 20 Pacific Island community leaders and connectors about their communities' perspectives and anticipated responses to natural hazards in Auckland, New Zealand. Home to the largest population of Pacific people in the world, Auckland provides the basis for understanding the complexities of delivering disaster information across numerous community groups. The rich cultural and linguistic backgrounds of multiple Pacific communities living in this city highlight the need to consider the complexities of disaster messaging related to natural hazards. In particular, the article forwards the importance of incorporating the guiding concepts of reach, relevance, receptiveness, and relationships into a DRR approach with culturally and linguistically diverse groups. These concepts are presented as an embedded guiding framework that can helpfully inform disaster communication.

Vibrational spectroscopy is one of the key instrumentations that provide non-invasive investigation of structural and chemical composition for both organic and inorganic materials. However, diffraction of light funda- mentally limits the spatial resolution of far-field vibrational spectroscopy to roughly half the wavelength. In this article, we thoroughly review the integration of atomic force microscopy （AFM） with vibrational spectroscopy to enable the nanoscale characterization of emerging energy materials, which has not been possible with far-field optical techniques. The discussed methods utilize the AFM tip as a nanoscopic tool to extract spatially resolved electronic or molecular vibrational resonance spectra of a sample illuminated by a visible or infrared （IR） light source. The absorption of light by electrons or individual functional groups within molecules leads to changes in the sample＇s thermal response, optical scattering, and atomic force interactions, all of which can be readily probed by an AFM tip. For example, photothermal induced resonance （PTIR） spectroscopy methods measure a sample＇s local thermal expansion or temperature rise. Therefore, they use the AFM tip as a thermal detector to directly relate absorbed IR light to the thermal response of a sample. Optical scattering methods based on scanning near-field optical microscopy （SNOM） correlate the spectrum of scattered near-field light with molecular vibrational modes. More recently, photo-induced force microscopy （PiFM） has been developed to measure the change of the optical force gradient due to the light absorption by molecular vibrational resonances using AFM＇s superb sensitivity in detecting tip-sample force interactions. Such recent efforts successfully breech the diffraction limit of light to provide nanoscale spatial resolution of vibrational spectroscopy,which will become a critical technique for characterizing novel energy materials.

Traditional Chinese medicine （TCM） relies on the combined effects of herbs within prescribed formulae. However, given the combinatorial explosion due to the vast number of herbs available for treatment, the study of these combined effects can become computationally intractable. Thus feature selection has become increasingly crucial as a pre-processing step prior to the study of combined effects in TCM informatics. In accord with this goal, a new feature se- lection algorithm known as a co-evolving memetic wrapper （COW） is proposed in this paper. COW takes advantage of recent research in genetic algorithms （GAs） and memetic al- gorithms （MAs） by evolving appropriate feature subsets for a given domain. Our empirical experiments have demonstrated that COW is capable of selecting subsets of herbs from a TCM insomnia dataset that shows signs of combined effects on the prediction of patient outcomes measured in terms of classification accuracy. We compare the proposed algorithm with results from statistical analysis including main effects and up to three way interaction terms and show that COW is capable of correctly identifying the herbs and herb by herb effects that are significantly associated to patient outcome prediction.

Direct numerical simulations are carried out to assess the potential drag reduction of compressible turbulent flow between isothermal *** the sake of achieving drag reduction,the flow is actively controlled by deformable dimples lying on the bottom wall of the *** first stage of the procedure consists in assessing the optimum geometry of the *** this regard,the lower wall is allowed to freely deform itself according to the loop of *** method is called the smart wall approach in this *** an analysis of the typical shape of the wall deformation thus obtained,it is found that dimples should be thinner than or comparable to the width of streaky structures in the spanwise direction and elongated in the streamwise *** active dimples as the wall-deformation actuators,a 15% drag reduction is obtained for the flow at Mam = 0.35 while the drag reduction rate is about 12% for the flow at Mam = *** fundamental mechanism of the drag reduction is then discussed in this *** drag reduction is believed to result from two aspects:the reduction of the mean streamwise velocity gradient near the deformable wall and the suppression of the turbulent fluctuations.

A mechanically fluidized reactor （MFR） is a novel and compact reactor used for biomass pyrolysis. Endothermic biomass pyrolysis requires heat provided from the wall of the MFR. Meanwhile, mixing with a vertical stirrer helps achieve effective heat transfer from the wall to the bed. Here, the heat trans- fer characteristics between the wall of a 1.0-L MFR and its bed of mechanically fluidized sand particles were studied. An induction heating system was used to heat the wall, while a vertical blade stirrer was used for mixing. Heat transfer measurements were carried out using silica sand particles, having three average Sauter mean diameters： 190, 300, and 600 p.m. The overall wall-to-bed heat transfer coeffi- cients were estimated using temperature measurements taken during continuous injection of water onto the fluidized bed. The overall heat transfer coefficient for bed temperatures of 500-700℃ increased as particle size increased or superficial velocity of the vaporized liquid increased. Effect of impeller rotation speed also was investigated. Typically, the overall heat transfer coefficient increased as rotation speed increased. The wall-to-bed heat transfer coefficients obtained in this study are comparable to estimates from traditional bubbling fluidized beds, even at vapor velocities below the minimum fluidization veloccity.

In processes such as Fluid Coking^(™),agglomerate formation should be minimized since it reduces the yield of valuable products,and degrades operability because of the fouling of *** experimental model,consisting of an aqueous solution of gum arabic with a dye,has been successfully developed to simulate the formation of agglomerates in the Fluid Coking^(™)process,where bitumen is sprayed into a fluidized bed of coke particles The particles wetted by a spray could be predicted by assuming that all the particles in the wake of bubbles formed from the tip of the spray jet have been wetted by the injected *** transfer of liquid from particles wetted with the spray to dry bed particles was relatively ineffective,as the number of wet particles increased by only 50%.With successive liquid injections,the proportion of the liquid trapped in agglomerates increases in latter injections:large agglomerates from earlier injections accumulate above the grid and are carried by gas bubbles into the spray jet cavity,where they seed fresh agglomerates.
