Aim:To determine the effect of saposin C (a known trophic domain of prosaposin) on proliferation,migration and invasion,as well as its effect on the expression of urokinase plasmonogen activator (uPA),its receptor (uPAR) and matrix metalloproteinases (MMP)-2 and -9 in normal and malignant prostate *** addition,we tested whether saposin C can activate p42/44 and stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun NH_2-terminal kinase (SAPK/JNK) signal transduction pathways of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) ***:We employed West- ern blot analysis,phospho-specific antibodies,cell proliferation assay,reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, in vitro kinase assays and migration and invasion to determine the effect of saposin C on various biological behaviors of prostate stromal and cancer ***:Saposin C,in a cell type-specific manner,upregulates uPA/uPAR and immediate early gene c-Jun expression,stimulates cell proliferation,migration and invasion and activates p42/44 and SAPK/JNK MAPK pathways in prostate stromal and cancer *** prostate epithelial cells were not responsive to saposin C treatment in the above ***:Saposin C functions as a multipotential modulator of diverse biological activities in prostate cancer and stromal *** results strongly suggest that saposin C functions as a potent growth factor for prostatic cells and may contribute to prostate carcinogenesis and/or the development of hormone-refractory prostate cancer.

The synthesis of martensitic or shape-memory bulk metallic glass composites(BMGCs)via solidification of the glass-forming melts requires the meticulous selection of the chemical composition and the proper choice of the processing parameters in order to ensure that the glassy matrix coexists with the desired amount of austenitic ***,a relatively limited number of such systems,where austenite and glassy matrix coexist over a wide range of compositions,is ***,we study the effective-ness of powder metallurgy as an alternative to solidification for the synthesis of shape memory ***_(48)Cu_(36)Al_(8)Ag_(8)matrix composites with different volume fractions of Ni_(50.6)Ti_(49.4)are fabricated using hot pressing and their microstructure,mechanical properties and deformation mechanism are investigated employing experiments and *** results demonstrate that shape-memory BMGCs with tun-able microstructures and properties can be synthesized by hot *** phase stability of the glass and austenitic components across a wide range of compositions allows us to examine fundamental as-pects in the field of shape memory BMGCs,including the effect of the confining stress on the martensitic transformation exerted by the glassy matrix,the contribution of each phase to the plasticity and the mechanism responsible for shear band *** present method gives a virtually infinite choice among the possible combinations of glassy matrices and shape memory phases,expanding the range of accessible shape memory BMGCs to systems where the glassy and austenitic phases do not form simul-taneously using the solidification route.

Exceptional points(EPs) are degeneracies of non-Hermitian operators where, in addition to the eigenvalues, the corresponding eigenmodes become degenerate. Classical and quantum photonic systems with EPs have attracted tremendous attention due to their unusual properties, topological features, and an enhanced sensitivity that depends on the order of the EP, i.e., the number of degenerate eigenmodes. Yet, experimentally engineering higher-order EPs in classical or quantum domains remain an open challenge due to the stringent symmetry constraints that are required for the coalescence of multiple eigenmodes. Here, we analytically show that the number-resolved dynamics of a single, lossy waveguide beam splitter, excited by N indistinguishable photons and post-selected to the N-photon subspace, will exhibit an EP of order N+1. By using the well-established mapping between a beam splitter Hamiltonian and the perfect state transfer model in the photon-number space,we analytically obtain the time evolution of a general N-photon state and numerically simulate the system’s evolution in the post-selected manifold. Our results pave the way toward realizing robust, arbitrary-order EPs on demand in a single device.

High performance corrosion and wear resistant composite titanium nitride layers produced on the AZ91D magnesium alloy by a hybrid method

Composite,diffusive titanium nitride layers formed on a titanium and aluminum sub-layer were produced on the AZ91D magnesium *** layers were obtained using a hybrid method which combined the PVD processes with the final sealing by a hydrothermal *** microstructure,resistance to corrosion,mechanical damage,and frictional wear of the layers were *** properties of the AZ91D alloy covered with these layers were compared with those of the untreated alloy and of some engineering materials such as 316L stainless steel,100Cr6 bearing steel,and the AZ91D alloy subjected to commercial *** has been found that the composite diffusive nitride layer produced on the AZ91D alloy and then sealed by the hydrothermal treatment ensures the corrosion resistance comparable with that of 316L stainless *** layers are characterized by higher electrochemical durability which is due to the surface being overbuilt with the titanium oxides formed,as shown by the XPS examinations,from titanium nitride during the hydrothermal *** composite titanium nitride layers exhibit high resistance to mechanical damage and wear,including frictional wear which is comparable with that of 100Cr6 bearing *** performance properties of the AZ91D magnesium alloy covered with the composite titanium nitride coating are substantially superior to those of the alloy subjected to commercial anodizing which is the dominant technique employed in industrial practice.

Intravenous administration of glutathione protects parenchymal and non-parenchymal liver cells against reperfusion injury following rat liver transplantation

AIM:To investigate the effects of intravenous administration of the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) on reperfusion injury following liver transplantation. METHODS:Livers of male Lewis rats were transplanted after 24 h of hypothermic preservation in University of Wisconsin solution in a syngeneic *** a 2-h reperfusion period either saline (controls,n=8) or GSH (50 or 100 μmol/(h·kg),n=5 each) was continuously administered via the jugular vein. RESULTS:Two hours after starting reperfusion plasma ALT increased to 1 457±281 U/L (mean±SE) in controls but to only 908±187 U/L (P<0.05) in animals treated with 100 μmol GSH/(h·kg).No protection was conveyed by 50μmol GSH/(h·kg).Cytoprotection was confirmed by morphological findings on electron microscopy:GSH treatment prevented detachment of sinusoidal endothelial cells (SECs) as well as loss of microvilli and mitochondrial swelling of ***,postischemic bile flow increased *** fluorescence microscopy revealed a nearly complete restoration of sinusoidal blood flow and a significant reduction of leukocyte adherence to sinusoids and postsinusoidal *** infusion of 50μmol and 100 μmol GSH/(h·kg),plasma GSH increased to 65±7 mol/L and 97±18 mol/L,but to only 20±3 mol/L in untreated recipients. Furthermore,plasma glutathione disulfide (GSSG) increased to 7.5±1.0 mol/L in animals treated with 100μmol/(h·kg) GSH but infusion of 50μmol GSH/(h·kg) did not raise levels of untreated controls (1.8±0.5 mol/L vs 2.2±0.2 mol/L). CONCLUSION:Plasma GSH levels above a critical level may act as a “sink” for ROS produced in the hepatic vasculature during reperfusion of liver ***,GSH can be considered a candidate antioxidant for the Drevention of reperfusion injury after liver transplantation,in particular since it has a low toxicity in humans.

Influence of physical data and cooling conditions on the solidification of magnesium die castings

As the simulation quality increases, the determination of hot spots is not enough to foundry engineers anymore. The simulation results have to fit in a quality way into the real foundry world. More and more results of the simulation will be used to optimise the casting process. Here it is necessary to have a very precise knowledge of the physical data. as well as the description of the geometry. To make use of the simulation in especially the magnesium-casting development it is necessary to work with precise geometrical, physical and numerical models. In this paper we describe the development of physical data concerning the heat transfer during filling and solidification by different casting methods. The low pressure as well as the gravity die casting method are used to get real data to find out the right conditions in the simulation in order to simulate the real behaviour during production. Practical tests are done under different test conditions to develop the right physical data as well as the right conditions in the metal-mould interface. The different surface conditions and the influence of the die and the molten metal temperatures are important for the layout of the die casting process. Three different shapes were applied to different mould materials and casting methods. The cooling conditions are tested on specific items. The cooling shape is not restricted by the drilling conditions. The effect of different cooling conditions are generated and measured. The results form the basis for the heat transfer conditions. These results are applied to real castings, cellular phone housings by low-pressure die casting process. The use of the new conditions leads to a good process description.
