Photonic smart bandage for wound healing assessment

Chronic wounds affect around 2% of the world population with an annual multi-billion dollar cost to the healthcare system. This background pushes the development of new therapies and procedures for wound healing and its assessment. Among them, the potential of hydrogen(pH) assessment is an important indicator of the wound healing stage and condition. This paper presents the development of the first optical fiber-embedded smart wound dressing for pH assessment. An intrinsically pH-sensitive optical fiber is fabricated using a polydimethylsiloxane(PDMS) precursor doped with rhodamine B dye. Raman and Fourier transform infrared(FTIR) spectroscopies are performed in order to verify the presence of rhodamine B and PDMS in the fiber samples. Then, the fiber is embedded in gauze fabric and hydrocolloid wound dressing. In addition, such low Young’s modulus of PDMS fiber enables its use as a highly sensitive pressure sensor, where the results show that the fiber-embedded bandage can measure pressures as low as 0.1 kPa with a high linearity in the range of 0 to 0.3 kPa. The smart bandage is subjected to different pH, which resulted in a wavelength shift of 0.67 nm/pH when the absorption peak at 515 nm was analyzed. Furthermore, pH increase leads to linear decrease of the transmitted optical power(R2 of 0.998), with rise and fall times below 20 s and 30 s, respectively. Therefore, the proposed optical fiber-embedded smart bandage enables the simultaneous assessment of pressure and pH on the wound region.

Photonic technology combined with artificial intelligence plays a key role in the development of the latest smart system trends,integrating cutting-edge technology with machine learning *** paper proposes a transmission-reflection analysis based system using dielectric nanoparticle-doped fiber combined with artificial intelligence to address one of the major problems in the distributed sensing approach:reducing the cost while maintaining high spatial resolution to close the gap between distributed sensors and the general *** learning-based models are designed to classify the perturbed positions when the same force is used and force regression when different forces are applied on each *** results show an accuracy of 99.43%in the position classification of multiple disturbances and an rms error of 1.53 N in the force regression,which represents 5%of the force *** addition,a smart environment using the current system is proposed,which presented 100%accuracy in identifying the positions of different persons in the *** smart environment enables remote home care of patients with high reliability,intelligent decision-making,and a predictive capability.

Carbon Stock Assessment at a Regional Level, on Pure and Mixed Stands, Based on Inventory Data: A Case Study

Following Kyoto protocol considerable research efforts have been made on carbon sequestration assessment of forest stands. The aim of the present study was to test the adequacy of two documented methodologies to obtain stand level dry biomass and carbon estimates, considering its application at regional scale, for pure and mixed stands. The procedures refer to: 1) the estimation of dry biomass through the use of tree biomass models and 2) the use of biomass conversion and expansion factors (BCEF) to convert stem volume raw data into aboveground dry biomass. Using the dry biomass values, carbon stock is easily estimated using conversion factors, being 0.50 a generally accepted value. Case study reports to a pilot zone with pure and mixed stands of Eucalyptus globulus Labill and Pinus pinaster Ait. in Portugal. Procedure 1) gives the most reliable results when the database includes detailed information at tree level, both for pure or mixed stands. When individual tree data is not accessible, option 2) is an interesting option to consider for pure stands. The use of BCEF-based procedure in mixed stands is not advocated at least when considering the direct use of a single conversion factor, as the value of the factor strongly depends on the forest composition.

Botanical Aspects,Caffeine Content and Antioxidant Activity of Coffea arabica

Brazil is the largest coffee exporter in the world. In addition, it occupies the second position, among the consuming countries of the drink. To investigate the chemical composition and quality of the coffee drink from Coffea arabica species, samples grown in the city of Ourinhos, the third most productive region in the state of Sao Paulo, a study of its properties and characteristics was conducted. The pharmacobotanical characteristics were investigated performed according to usual techniques in these researches through macroscopic and microscopic studies through cross-sections. The oil obtained for analysis was extracted by soxhlet, and the caffeine content was measured for green grains using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) using as stationary phase, column C18 and gradient mobile phase formed by 80% water and 20% methanol. The concentration obtained was 44.983 ± 0.86 μg/mL. The antioxidant activity was measured in triplicate through the DPPH test of the in natura coffee oil, and presented antioxidant action of EC50 25.89 ± 1.16 μg/mL.

Objective To evaluate the chemical composition and effects of Artemisia vulgaris(AV)hydroalcoholic extract(HEAV)on breast cancer cells(MCF-7 and SKBR-3),chronic myeloid leukemia(K562)and NIH/3T3 *** Phytochemical analysis of HEAV was done by high-performance liquid chromatography-mass(HPLC)*** and cell death studies were performed using trypan blue and Annexin/FITC-7AAD,***-1(Fer-1)and necrostatin-1(Nec-1)were used to assess the mode of HEAV-induced cell death and acetoxymethylester(BAPTA-AM)was used to verify the involvement of cytosolic calcium in this *** calcium measurements were made using *** HEAV decreased the viability of MCF-7,SKBR-3 and K562 cells(P<0.05).The viability of HEAV-treated K562 cells was reduced compared to HEAV-exposed fibroblasts(P<0.05).Treatment of K562 cells with HEAV induced cell death primarily by late apoptosis and necrosis in assays using annexin V-FITC/7-AAD(P<0.05).The use of Nec-1 and Fer-1 increased the viability of K562 cells treated with HEAV relative to cells exposed to HEAV alone(P<0.01).HEAV-induced Ca^(2+)release mainly from lysosomes in K562 cells(P<0.01).Furthermore,BAPTA-AM,an intracellular Ca^(2+)chelator,decreased the number of non-viable cells treated with HEAV(P<0.05).Conclusions HEAV is cytotoxic and activates several modalities of cell death,which are partially dependent on lysosomal release of Ca^(2+).These effects may be related to artemisinin and caffeoylquinic acids,the main compounds identified in HEAV.

Losartan activates sirtuin 1 in rat reduced-size orthotopic liver transplantation

AIM: To investigate a possible association between losartan and sirtuin 1(SIRT1) in reduced-size orthotopic liver transplantation(ROLT) in ***: Livers of male Sprague-Dawley rats(200-250 g) were preserved in University of Wisconsin preservation solution for 1 h at 4 ℃ prior to *** an additional group,an antagonist of angiotensin Ⅱ type 1 receptor(AT1R),losartan,was orally administered(5 mg/kg) 24 h and 1 h before the surgical procedure to both the donors and the ***(as an indicator of liver injury),SIRT1 activity,and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide(NAD+,a co-factor necessary for SIRT1 activity) levels were determined by biochemical *** expression of SIRT1,acetylated Fox O1(ac-Fox O1),NAMPT(the precursor of NAD+),heat shock proteins(HSP70,HO-1) expression,endoplasmic reticulum stress(GRP78,IRE1 a,p-e IF2) and apoptosis(caspase 12 and caspase 3) parameters were determined by Western *** alterations in protein expression of mitogen activated protein kinases(MAPK),such as p-p38 and p-ERK,were also ***,the SIRT3 protein expression and m RNA levels were ***: The present study demonstrated that losartan administration led to diminished liver injury when compared to ROLT group,as evidenced by the significant decreases in alanine aminotransferase(358.3 ± 133.44 vs 206 ± 33.61,P < 0.05) and aspartate aminotransferase levels(893.57 ± 397.69 vs 500.85 ± 118.07,P < 0.05).The lessened hepatic injury in case of losartan was associated with enhanced SIRT1 protein expression and activity(5.27 ± 0.32 vs 6.08 ± 0.30,P < 0.05).This was concomitant with increased levels of NAD+(0.87 ± 0.22 vs 1.195 ± 0.144,P < 0.05) the co-factor necessary for SIRT1 activity,as well as with decreases in ac-Fox O1 *** treatment also provoked significant attenuation of endoplasmic reticulum stress parameters(GRP78,IRE1 a,p-e IF2) which was consistent with reduced levels of both caspase 12 and caspase 3.

Applying a Context-based Method to Build a Knowledge Graph for the Blue Amazon

Knowledge graphs are employed in several tasks,such as question answering and recommendation systems,due to their ability to represent relationships between *** constructing such a graphs,however,remains an unresolved challenge within knowledge *** tackle this challenge,we propose CtxKG,a method specifically aimed at extracting knowledge graphs in a context of limited resources in which the only input is a set of unstructured text *** is based on OpenIE(a relationship triple extraction method)and BERT(a language model)and contains four stages:the extraction of relationship triples directly from text;the identification of synonyms across triples;the merging of similar entities;and the building of bridges between knowledge graphs of different *** method distinguishes itself from those in the current literature(i)through its use of the parse tree to avoid the overlapping entities produced by base implementations of OpenIE;and(ii)through its bridges,which create a connected network of graphs,overcoming a limitation similar methods have of one isolated graph per *** compare our method to two others by generating graphs for movie articles from Wikipedia and contrasting them with benchmark graphs built from the OMDb movie *** results suggest that our method is able to improve multiple aspects of knowledge graph *** also highlight the critical role that triple identification and named-entity recognition have in improving the quality of automatically generated graphs,suggesting future paths for ***,we apply CtxKG to build BlabKG,a knowledge graph for the Blue Amazon,and discuss possible improvements.
