We present the results of a time-series CCD photometric survey of variable stars in the field of the open cluster NGC 7789. In a field of about one degree centering on the cluster, a total of 28 new variable stars are discovered (14 W UMa systems, nine EA-type eclipsing binaries, one RR Lyr star, and four unclassified). In addition, we recovered 11 old variables previously discovered by other authors. Preliminary parameters are given for some of these variables.

Strong MgII quasar absorption line systems provide us with a useful tool to understand the gas that plays an important role in galaxy formation. In this paper, placing the theories of galaxy formation in a cosmological context, we present semi-analytic models and Monte-Carlo simulations for strong MgII absorbers produced in gaseous galactic haloes and/or galaxy discs. We investigate the redshift path density for the MgII absorption lines and the properties of galaxy/absorber pairs, in particular the anti-correlation between the equivalent width of MgII absorption line and the projected galaxy-to-sightline distance. The simulated result of the mean redshift path density of strong MgII systems is consistent with the observational result. The fraction of strong MgII systems arising from galaxy disks is predicted to be ~ 10% of the total. There exists an anti-correlation between the absorption line equivalent and the projected distance of sightline to galaxy center and galaxy luminosity. We determined that the mean absorbing radius Rabs≈29 h-1 bpc(LB/LB*)0.35. After taking selection effects into consideration, this becomes Rabs ≈38 h-1 bpc(LB/LB*)0.18, which is in good agreement with the observational result. This shows the importance of considering selection effects when comparing models with observations.

A digitalized temperature map is recovered from the first light sky survey image published by the Planck team, from which an angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is derived. The amplitudes of the low multipoles (low-l) measured from the preliminary Planck power spectrum are significantly lower than those reported by the WMAP team. Possible systematical effects are far from enough to explain the observed low-l differences.

A remarkable inconsistency between the calibrated differential time-ordered data (TOD) of the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) mission,which is the input for map-making,and the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps published by the WMAP team is revealed,indicating that there must exist a serious problem in the map making routine of the WMAP *** inconsistency is easy to be confirmed without the use of WMAP map-making *** view of the importance of this issue for cosmology study,we invite readers to check it by themselves.

The development of observational techniques has enriched our knowledge of supernova remnants. In this paper, we review the main progresses in the last decade, including new discoveries of supernova remnants and the associated (rare type of) pulsars, nucleosynthesis, the interaction between supernova remnants and molecular clouds, dust in the supernova remnants, shock physics, and cosmic ray accelerations.

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope(HXMT) is an X-ray astronomical satellite in 1-250 keV,consisting of three collimated *** present the in-flight calibration approach of the collimator alignment and Point Spread Function(PSF) for HXMT,using both the direct fitting method and the imaging *** to observational simulations of the Crab Nebula,we find that these two methods produce almost the same calibration accuracy of the alignment,and with a one-day scanning observation,the alignment can be calibrated to better than 0.45' and 0.1' along the wide and narrow directions of the Field of View(FOV) for a detector module,which corresponds to a localization accuracy of better than 0.1' and meets the scientific requirement.

We have investigated the relation between the root mean square(rms) variability and the X-ray flux(rms-flux relation) of the Z source Cyg X-2,and as well the energy dependence based on the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer(RXTE) *** currently focus on the horizontal branch(HB),due to the negative correlation in flux of the soft and the hard *** rms-flux correlation has energy dependence as follows:positive at hard X-rays(above 10 keV) but negative at soft X-rays(below 10 keV).This provides a feature different from the previous one,and may be suggestive of different origins of X-rays below and above 10 ***,the overall spectrum can be well fitted with a model consisting of a blackbody and Comptonization components,but the fitting results do not reveal any features around 10 keV that could account for such a change in the rms-flux relation.

We present a quantitative estimate of the relativistic corrections to thethermal SZ power spectrum produced by the energetic electrons in massive clusters. The correctionsare well within 10% for current experiments with working frequencies below ν 350 GHz. Moreover, the corrections appear to be slightlysmaller at higher l or smaller angular scales. We conclude that there is no need to include therelativistic corrections in the theoretical study of the SZ power spectrum especially at lowfrequencies unless the SZ power spectrum is used for precision cosmology.

The author first analyzes the existence of ground state solutions and cylindrically symmetric solutions and then the asymptotic behavior of the ground state solution of the equation -△u =φ（r）u^p-1, u 〉 0 in R^N, u ∈ D^1,2（R^N）, where N ≥ 3, x = （x^1,z） ∈ R^K×R^N-K,2 ≤ K ≤ N,r = ｜x′｜. It is proved that for 2（N-s）/（N-2）〈 p 〈 2^＊ = 2N/（N - 2）, 0 〈 s 〈 2, the above equation has a ground state solution and a cylindrically symmetric solution. For p = 2^＊, the above equation does not have a ground state solution but a cylindrically ***, and when p close to 2^＊, the ground state solutions are not cylindrically symmetric. On the other hand, it is proved that as p close to 2＊, the ground state solution Up has a unique maximum point xp = （x′p, Zp） and as p → 2^＊, ｜x′p｜ → r0 which attains the maximum of φ on R^N. The asymptotic behavior of ground state solution Up is also given, which also deduces that the ground state solution is not cylindrically symmetric as p goes to 2^＊.
