Subchronic Oral Cadmium Exposure Exerts both Stimulatory and Suppressive Effects on Pulmonary Inflammation/Immune Reactivity in Rats

Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of oral cadmium(Cd) ingestion on the pulmonary immune response. Methods Determination of Cd content in lungs and histopathological evaluation of the tissue was performed in rats following 30-day oral Cd administration(5 and 50 mg/L). Antioxidant enzyme defense(superoxide dismutase and catalase), cell infiltration, and production of tumor necrosis factor(TNF) and interferon(IFN)-γ, as well as the activity of myeloperoxidase(MPO), nitric oxide(NO), and various cytokines [interleukin(IL)-1β, IL-6, IL-10, and IL-17] were investigated. Results Cd caused tissue damage and cell infiltration in the lungs, and this damage was more pronounced at higher doses. Cd deposition resulted in lung inflammation characterized by a dose-dependent IL-1β increase in lung homogenates, increased TNF levels at both doses, and IL-6 stimulation at low doses with inhibition observed at higher doses. Cd exerted differential effects on lung leukocytes isolated by enzyme digestion, and these effects were characterized by a lack of change in the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, an inhibition of IL-1β and TNF, and stimulation of MPO and IFN-γ. The higher capacity of Cd-exposed lung cells to respond to the opportunistic pathogen Staphylococcus epidermidis was demonstrated in vitro. Conclusion The potential of ingested Cd to exert both proinflammatory and immunosuppressive effects on pulmonary tissue inflammation and immune reactivity highlights the complex immunomodulatory actions of this metal.

The effect of reactive plasticizer on viscoelastic and mechanical properties of solid rocket propellants based on different types of HTPB resin

Conventional plasticizers deteriorate mechanical and viscoelastic properties of the propellants due to their migration upon aging and long-term storage,which affects reliability and safety properties during exploitation.To address this issue,conventional plasticizer,dioctyl adipate(DOA),is replaced by reactive one,castor oil(CO).In addition,three different types of HTPB were used to obtain propellants with designed viscoelastic and mechanical properties.The CO increased propellants viscosity,without a significant impact on the propellant processability,regardless to the type of prepolymer.Conversely,mechanical properties were different depending on the type of resin,which were further analyzed by gel permeation chromatography(GPC).Addition of CO formed a denser polymer network and shifted T_(g) to higher values,compared to the compositions with DOA.The tensile strength of CO-containing propellants was lower at +20℃ and +50℃ compared to the reference compositions,while the strain at maximum load and strain at break were significantly increased with pronounced plastic deformation,especially for samples at -30℃.The inclusion of CO in the propellants composition gives more room for adjusting a wide range of mechanical properties.

Pain and function deteriorate in patients awaiting total joint arthroplasty that has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic

BACKGROUND Elective total joint arthroplasty(TJA)procedures have been postponed as part of the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)response to avert healthcare system collapse.Total hip arthroplasty(THA)and total knee arthroplasty(TKA)procedures comprise the highest volume of elective procedures performed at health care facilities worldwide.AIM To determine the demand for TJA despite the pandemic and the impact of surgery postponement on physical and mental health.METHODS We conducted a prospective cross-sectional telephonic interview-based study on patients awaiting THA and TKA at an academic institution in South Africa.The questionnaire consisted of four sections.The first section recorded baseline demographic data and medical co-morbidities,the length of time spent awaiting TJA,and the patients’desire to undergo elective surgery despite the COVID-19 pandemic.Section 2 and Section 3 assessed the patients’current physical and mental health,respectively,as a consequence of deferred surgical intervention.The last section established the patients’perception of the healthcare system’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and necessity to postpone elective surgery.Patients received counseling and education on the current state of surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic and associated risks.Thereafter,patients were once again asked about their desire to undergo TJA during the COVID-19 pandemic.RESULTS We included 185 patients(65.95%female;mean age:50.28 years)awaiting TJA for a mean of 26.42±30.1 mo.Overall,88.65%of patients wanted TJA despite the COVID-19 pandemic.Patients awaiting TJA for 1-3 years were 3.3-fold more likely to want surgery than those waiting<1 year(P<0.000).Patients with comorbidities were 8.4-fold less likely to want TJA than those with no comorbidities(P=0.013).After receiving education,the patients wanting TJA decreased to 54.05%.Patients who changed their opinion after education had less insight on the increased morbidity(P=0.046)and mortality(P=0.001)associated with COVID-19.Despite awaiting TJA for sh
