Retrotransposons,a type of DNA fragment that can mobilize itself on genome,can generate genetic variations and develop for molecular markers based on the insertion *** finger proteins(ZNFs)are among the most abundant proteins in eukaryotic animals,and their functions are extraordinarily diverse and particularly important in gene *** the current study,bioinformatic prediction was performed to screen for retrotransposon insertion polymorphisms(RIPs)in six ZNF genes(ZNF2,ZNF3,ZNF7,ZNF8,ZNF10 and ZNF12).Six RIPs in these ZNFs,including one short interspersed nuclear element(SINE)RIP in intron 1 and one long interspersed nuclear element 1(L1)RIP in intron 3 of ZNF2,one SINE RIP in 5′flanking region and one SINE RIP in intron 2 of ZNF3,one SINE RIP in 3′UTR of ZNF7 and one L1 RIP in intron 2 of ZNF12,were discovered and their presence was confirmed by *** impact of the SINE RIP in the first intron of ZNF2,which is close to the core promoter of ZNF2,on the gene activity was investigated by dual-luciferase assay in three cell *** results showed that the SINE insertion in the intron 1 of ZNF2 repressed the core promoter activity extremely significantly(P<0.01)in cervical cancer cells and porcine primary embryonic fibroblasts(HeLa and PEF),thus SINE may act as a *** SINE RIP also significantly(P<0.05)affected the corrected back fat thickness in Yorkshire *** corrected back fat thickness of individuals with SINE insertion in the first intron of ZNF2 was significantly(P<0.05)higher than that of individuals without SINE *** summary,our data suggested that RIPs play important roles in the genetic variations of these ZNF genes and SINE RIP in the intron 1 of ZNF2 may provide a useful molecular marker for the screening of fat deposition in the pig breeding.

Changes in Grain yield of Rice and Emission of Greenhouse Gases from Paddy Fields after Application of Organic Fertilizers Made from Maize Straw

A field experiment was conducted at the farm of Yangzhou University, Yangzhou, China, to study the effects of organic fertilizers made from maize straw on rice grain yield and the emission of greenhouse gases. Four organic fertilizer treatments were as follows： maize straw （MS）, compost made from maize straw （MC）, methane-generating maize residue （MR）, and black carbon made from maize straw （BC）. These organic fertilizers were applied separately to paddy fields before rice transplanting. No organic fertilizer was applied to the control （CK）. The effects of each organic fertilizer on rice grain yield and emission of greenhouse gases were investigated under two conditions, namely, no nitrogen （N） application （ON） and site-specific N management （SSNM）. Rice grain yields were significantly higher in the MS, MC and MR treatments than those in CK under either ON or SSNM. The MS treatment resulted in the highest grain yield and agronomic N use efficiency. However, no significant difference was observed for these parameters between the BC treatment and CK. The changes in the emissions of methane （CH4） carbon dioxide （CO2）, or nitrous oxide （N20） from the fields were similar among all organic fertilizer treatments during the entire rice growing season. The application of each organic fertilizer significantly increased the emission of each greenhouse gas （except N20 emission in the BC treatment） and global warming potential （GWP）. Emissions of all the greenhouse gases and GWP increased under the same organic fertilizer treatment in the presence of N fertilizer, whereas GWP per unit grain yield decreased. The results indicate that the application of organic fertilizer （MS, MC or MR） could increase grain yield, but also could enhance the emissions of greenhouse gases from paddy fields. High grain yield and environmental efficiency could be achieved by applying SSNM with MR.

Design, fabrication, and testing of low-group-velocity S-band traveling-wave accelerating structure

To implement the Tsinghua Thomson Scattering X-ray Source upgrade plan and the Very Compact Inverse Compton Scattering Gamma-ray Source (VIGAS) program, a new 1.5-m traveling-wave accelerating structure was designed to replace the old 3-m SLAC-type structure with the aim of increasing the accelerating gradient from15 to 30 MV/m. The new type of structure works in the 3π/4 mode with a comparatively low group velocity varying from 0.007c to 0.003c to increase the accelerating gradient at a given power. An elliptical iris was employed to reduce the surface field enhancement. The filling process of the low-group-velocity structure was analyzed using a circuit model. After fabrication, the structure was precisely tuned using the non-contact tuning method, followed by detailed low-power radiofrequency measurements. The structure was first installed and utilized at a beamline for the terahertz experiment at Tsinghua University. After 120 h of conditioning, it is now operating at a gradient of 24.2 MV/m and a 20.7-MW input power, with the klystron operating at its full power. It is expected to generate an accelerating gradient of 30 MV/m when the klystron power is upgraded to 30 MW in the near future.

Seven novel linear polyketides,talaketides A-G(1-7),were isolated from the rice media cultures of the mangrove sed-iment-derived fungus Talaromyces *** *** these,talaketides A-E(1-5)represented unprecedented unsaturated lin-ear polyketides with an epoxy ring *** structures,including absolute configurations of these compounds,were elucidated through detailed analyses of nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR)and high-resolution mass spectrometry(HR-MS)data,as well as elec-tronic custom distributors(ECD)*** the cytotoxicity screening against prostate cancer cell lines,talaketide E(5)demon-strated a dose-dependent inhibitory effect on prostate cancer PC-3 cell lines,with an IC50 value of 14.44 μmol·***,com-pound 5 significantly inhibited the cloning formation of PC-3 cell lines and arrested the cell cycle in S-phase,ultimately inducing *** findings indicate that compound 5 may serve as a promising lead compound for the development of a potential treat-ment for prostate cancer.

Buyang Huanwu Decoction regulates neural stem cell behavior in ischemic brain

The traditional Chinese medicine Buyang Huanwu Decoction has been shown to improve the neu- rological function of patients with stroke. However, the precise mechanisms underlying its effect remain poorly understood. In this study, we established a rat model of cerebral ischemia by middle cerebral artery occlusion and intragastrically administered 5 g/kg Buyang Huanwu Decoction, once per day, for 1, 7, 14 and 28 days after cerebral ischemia. Immunohistochemical staining revealed a number of cells positive for the neural stem cell marker nestin in the cerebral cortex, the subven- tricular zone and the ipsilateral hippocampal dentate gyrus in rat models of cerebral ischemia. Buyang Huanwu Decoction significantly increased the number of cells positive for 5-bromodeoxyuridine （BrdU）, a cell proliferation-related marker, microtubule-associated protein-2, a marker of neuronal differentiation, and growth-associated protein 43, a marker of synaptic plasticity in the ischemic rat cerebral regions. The number of positive cells peaked at 14 and 28 days after intragastric administration of Buyang Huanwu Decoction. These findings suggest that Buyang Huanwu Decoction can promote the proliferation and differentiation of neural stem cells and en- hance synaptic plasticity in ischemic rat brain tissue.

Surfactant-Modified Hydrophobic Biochar Derived from Laver (Porphyra haitanensis) with Superior Removal Performance for Kitchen Oil

In this study,a novel absorpent(MSAR600℃)with a hydrophobic surface and hierarchical porous structure for the removal of kitchen oil was facilely fabricated from the macroalgae,laver(Porphyra haitanensis)by incorpor-ating high-temperature carbonization and alkyl polyglucosides(APG)and rhamnolipid(RL)surfactants modiﬁ-*** characterization results showed MSAR600℃ possessed a louts-leaf-like papillae microstructure with high contact angle(137.5°),abundant porous structure with high speciﬁc surface area(23.4 m^(2)/g),and various oxygen-containing functional groups(-OH,C=O,C-O).Batch adsorption experiments were conducted to inves-tigate the effect of adsorption time,temperature,pH,and absorbent dose on kitchen oil adsorption *** the practical application for the removal of kitchen oil using MSAR600℃ was also *** results showed that MSAR600℃ had a higher removal efﬁciency for kitchen oil(75.98%),compared with the commercial detergent(72.3%).This study demonstrates an example of fabricating a green tableware detergent for enhanced removal performance of kitchen oil.

Enhanced Giant Magnetoimpedance Effect in Rapid Heat-Treated Fe-Based Amorphous Ribbons

An enhanced giant magnetoimpedance(GMI)effect of Fe-based amorphous ribbons is obtained by rapid heat *** structural investigations on the ribbon reveal the presence of two phases,i.e.a fine grained Fe3Si phase and a residual amorphous phase on rapid heat *** soft magnetic property is improved by rapid heat treatment;the crystal size and grain size of Fe_(3)Si *** maximum magnetoimpedance ratio obtained in the present study is 81%at 10 MHz,and the optimized heat-treated rate is 200℃/*** GMI curves are observed after the simultaneous rapid heat treatment and magnetic field *** suggests that tailoring of the nanocrystalline microstructures induced by optimum rapid heat treatment conditions can result in an excellent GMI effect.
