Abnormal electrocardiogram in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mimicking myocardial ischaemia

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that almost exclusively involves motor neurons although autonomic dysfunction has also been reported. We present an 84-year-old female with no documented history of heart disease, who was admitted with negative T waves in the electrocardiogram precordial leads mimicking myocardial ischaemia. No other abnormalities were shown in the rest of the cardiologic evaluation, suggesting autonomic nervous system dysfunction. A neurophysiological study demonstrated acute and chronic denervation in multiple muscles with normal nerve conduction studies, confirming ALS diagnosis. Previous studies have shown that subclinical sympathetic hyperfunction and parasympathetic hypofunction might result in cardiovascular dysfunction in ALS patients. It is important to detect disturbances of autonomic cardiac control because this dysfunction may influence survival and quality of life, leading to a decrease in life expectancy in ALS *** case Report may support the impairment of cardiac autonomic control in patients with ALS.

A new additive technique for manufacturing of short fibre-reinforced ultra-refractory ceramics is *** technique allows the fabrication of solvent-free,thin(~100µm),flexible,and easy-to-handle sheets suitable for fabricating homogeneous or layered structures.A large range of compositions,in terms of matrix and fibre volumetric contents,from 0%to 100%is *** amount of short carbon fibres incorporated in the sheets ranged from 20 to 50 vol%,whereas the fibre length ranged from 3 to 5 *** matrix composition investigated with this technique consisted of ZrB_(2)/Sic/Y_(2)O_(3).By increasing the fibre amount from 35 to 50 vol%,an improvement of mechanical properties was ***-point flexural strength(σ)ranged from 107 to 140 MPa,depending on the amount of carbon fibres(cf).The same holds true for the work of fracture,ranging from 108 to 253 J/m^(2).Functionally graded composites were fabricated by overlapping sheets with a fibre gradient(0%-50%).

Pathogenic mutations involving DNA repeat expansions are responsible for over 20 different neuronal and neuromuscular diseases. All result from expanded tracts of repetitive DNA sequences(mostly microsatellites) that become unstable beyond a critical length whentransmitted across generations. Nearly all are inherited as autosomal dominant conditions and are typically associated with anticipation. Pathologic unstable repeat expansions can be classified according to their length, repeat sequence, gene location and underlying pathologic mechanisms. This review summarizes the current contribution of mutant pluripotent stem cells(diseased human embryonic stem cells and patient-derived induced pluripotent stem cells) to the research of unstable repeat pathologies by focusing on particularly large unstable noncoding expansions. Among this class of disorders are Fragile X syndrome and Fragile X-associated tremor/ataxia syndrome, myotonic dystrophy type 1 and myotonic dystrophy type 2, Friedreich ataxia and c9 related amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and/or frontotemporal dementia, Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy and potentially more. common features that are typical to this subclass of conditions are RNA toxic gain-of-function, epigenetic loss-of-function, toxic repeat-associated non-ATG translation and somatic instability. For each mechanism we summarize the currently available stem cell based models, highlight how they contributed to better understanding of the related mechanism, and discuss how they may be utilized in future investigations.

AIM To evaluate the role of dynamic computed tomography(cT)scan imaging in diagnosing craniovertebral junction(cVJ)instability in patients with congenital cVJ *** Patients with symptomatic congenital cVJ malformations who underwent posterior fossa decompression and had a preoperative dynamic cT scan in flexion and extended position were included in this *** of the following craniometrical parameters were taken in flexed and extended neck position:Atlanto-dental interval(ADI),distance of the odontoid tip to the chamberlain’s line,and the clivus-canal angle(ccA).Assessment of the facet joints congruence was also performed in both *** of the values obtained in flexion and extension were compared using a paired Student’s *** A total of ten patients with a mean age of 37.9 years were *** flexion imaging,the mean ADI was1.76 mm,the mean ccA was 125.4°and the mean distance of the odontoid tip to the chamberlain’s line was+9.62 *** extension,the mean ADI was1.46 mm(P=0.29),the mean ccA was 142.2°(Pce of the odontoid tip to the chamberlain’s line was+7.11 mm(Pcetary subluxation demonstrated in dynamic imaging,two of them with mobile subluxation(both underwent cVJ fixation).The other two patients with a fixed subluxation were not initially *** patient with atlantoaxial assimilation and c23 fusion without initial facet subluxation developed a latter cVJ instability diagnosed with a dynamic cT *** with basilar invagination had a lower ccA variation compared to the whole *** craniometrical parameters,as well as the visualization of the facets location,may change significantly according to the neck *** imaging can provide additional useful information to the diagnosis of cVJ *** studies addressing the relationship between craniometrical changes and neck position are necessary.

X-ray absorption near-edge structure(XANES)spectra are the fingerprint of the local atomic and electronic structures around the absorbing ***,the quantitative analysis of these spectra is not *** with the most recent advances in this area,for a given spectrum,it is not clear a priori which structural parameters can be refined and how uncertainties should be ***,we present an alternative concept for the analysis of XANES spectra,which is based on machine learning algorithms and establishes the relationship between intuitive descriptors of spectra,such as edge position,intensities,positions,and curvatures of minima and maxima on the one hand,and those related to the local atomic and electronic structure which are the coordination numbers,bond distances and angles and oxidation state on the other *** approach overcoms the problem of the systematic difference between theoretical and experimental ***,the numerical relations can be expressed in analytical formulas providing a simple and fast tool to extract structural parameters based on the spectral *** methodology was successfully applied to experimental data for the multicomponent Fe:SiO_(2)system and reference iron compounds,demonstrating the high prediction quality for both the theoretical validation sets and experimental data.
