Investigating the use of an ionic liquid for rare earth mineral flotation

common collectors for rare earth mineral(REM) flotation,which include carboxylates and hydroxamates,face problems such as being non-selective and sensitive to impurity ions.A type of ionic liquid(IL),tetraethylammonium mono-(2-ethylhexyl)2-ethylhexyl phosphonate([N_(2222)][EHEHP]),has been investigated previously for rare earth elements(REE) solvent extraction,and was proven to be selective and effective.In this work,[N_(2222)][EHEHP] was evaluated as a collector in bastnasite(a primary REM source for REE production) flotation for the first time.The results were compared with quartz and hematite,two common gangue minerals in REM deposits.Zeta potential measurements and Fouriertransform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) were completed to investigate the surface chemical properties involved in the flotation of these minerals using this collector.The findings were compared with microflotation results.FT-IR and zeta potential measurements suggest adsorption of the collector’s phosphonate group onto bastnäsite and hematite,likely through chemisorption;whereas for quartz,the minimum micro flotation recovery is likely due to no adsorption of IL on its surface.Micro flotation re sults show higher collectability of [N_(2222)] [EHEHP] for hematite than bastnasite,the latter only shows appreciable recovery at pH 5 with elevated dosage of IL(500 g/t).To achieve better separation,a two-stage flotation scheme was designed and evaluated by bench scale flotation on a synthetic mineral mixture.The concentrates and tails were analyzed by magnetic separation,and it is found that bastnasite recovery over 90% with maximum upgrade ratio 1.7 can be achieved with elevated collector dosage.

Tertiary lymphoid structures(TLS)are ectopic lymphoid formations that form within nonlymphoid tissue.They share structural and functional characteristics with secondary lymphoid structures such as lymph nodes and can contain B-cell follicles and germinal centers surrounded by a T-cell region.TLS have been described in several types of cancers and are usually associated with positive patient outcomes.However,TLS differ vastly in cellular composition and location within tissue types.In this review,we discuss factors confounding the interpretation of the evidence for a prognostic role for TLS in cancer and frame these factors in the context of translation to regular clinical use.

Uganda has been implementing the Global Health Security Agenda(GHSA)since 2015 to build its capacity according to World Health Organization(WHO)Benchmarks on International Health Regulations capacities.The country remains prone to outbreaks,with more than 2o disease outbreaks reported in the past five years,including Ebola virus disease,crimean-congo haemorrhagic fever,Marburg haemorrhagic fever,measles,yel-low fever,coronavirus disease 2019(cOVID-19),and cholera.Antimicrobial resistance(AMR)is an ongoing challenge.Uganda scored capacity level 3 on infection prevention and control(IPc)and antimicrobial steward-ship(AMS)in the 2017 Joint External Evaluation(JEE)assessment.Identified gaps were being addressed after a self-assessment in 2021.This paper describes the technical assistance approaches provided to Uganda by the Medicines,Technologies,and Pharmaceutical Services Program,funded by the United States(U.S.)Agency for International Development,and implemented by Management Sciences for Health.The program,through a One Health approach,supported systematic capacity strengthening based on the JEE's capacity advancement framework for global health security,specifically relating to AMR.The program's interventions impacted 32 WHO benchmark actions(7 for AMR multisectoral coordination,16 for IPc,and 9 for AMS),contributing to Uganda's strengthened GHSA capacity.Leveraging success built on the AMR platform,the program trained 745 health workers in IPc for the Ebola virus and provided support for simulation exercises by eight district IPc teams.The program also worked with the Ministry of Health to coordinate IPc for the cOVID-19 response in five health regions,covering 45 districts and reaching 5,452 health workers at 858 health facilities.2024 chinese Medical Association Publishing House.Published by Elsevier BV.

Background Optimising the immunogenicity of cOVID-19 vaccines to improve their protection against disease is necessary.Fractional dosing by intradermal(ID)administration has been shown to be equally immunogenic as intramuscular(IM)administration for several vaccines,but the immunogenicity of ID inactivated whole severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-coV-2)at the full dose is unknown.This study(NcT04800133)investigated the superiority of antibody and T-cell responses of full-dose coronaVac by ID over IM administration in adolescents.Methods Participants aged 11–17 years received two doses of IM or ID vaccine,followed by the 3rd dose 13–42 days later.Humoral and cellular immunogenicity outcomes were measured post-dose 2(IM-cc versus ID-cc)and post-dose 3(IMccc versus ID-ccc).Doses 2 and 3 were administered to 173 and 104 adolescents,respectively.Results Spike protein(S)immunoglobulin G(IgG),S-receptor-binding domain(RBD)IgG,S IgG Fcγreceptor IIIa(FcγRIIIa)-binding,SNM[sum of individual(S),nucleocapsid protein(N),and membrane protein(M)peptide pool]-specific interleukin-2(IL-2)+cD4+,SNM-specific IL-2+cD8+,S-specific IL-2+cD8+,N-specific IL-2+cD4+,N-specific IL-2+cD8+and M-specific IL-2+cD4+responses fulfilled the superior and non-inferior criteria for ID-cc compared to IM-cc,whereas IgG avidity was inferior.For ID-ccc,S-RBD IgG,surrogate virus neutralisation test,90%plaque reduction neutralisation titre(PRNT90),PRNT50,S IgG avidity,S IgG FcγRIIIa-binding,M-specific IL-2+cD4+,interferon-γ+cD8+and IL-2+cD8+responses were superior and non-inferior to IM-ccc.The estimated vaccine efficacies were 49%,52%,66%and 79%for IM-cc,ID-cc,IM-ccc and ID-ccc,respectively.The ID groups reported more local,mild adverse reactions.conclusion This is the first study to demonstrate superior antibody and M-specific T-cell responses by ID inactivated SARScoV-2 vaccination and serves as the basis for future research to improve the immunogenicity of inactivated vaccines.

Dissipation of chlorpyrifos, pendimethalin, and thiophanate-methyl pesticides in compost based-versus peat-moss based-biomixture of biobeds

Biobed is a smart bioremediation system used to treat point-source pesticide contamination.Biomixture is the main component of biobeds,and pesticide dissipation is affected by its composition.This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of compost-based(c)versus peat-moss-based(P)biomixtures of biobeds on tested pesticide dissipation.Three concentrations(25,50,and 75 mg/kg)of chlorpyrifos,pendimethalin,and thiophanate methyl were added separately and as a mix to both biomixtures c and P.Our data showed the effect of biomixture type on the dissipation of the tested pesticides.For chlorpyrifos,its dissipation rate in biomixture P was more rapid than that in biomixture c.This result was confirmed by the mineralization kinetic experiment,since 25%of the initial ^(14)c-chlorpyrifos concentration accumulated in the form ^(14)cO_(2) in biomixture P compared to only 14%in biomixture c.In addition,the chlorpyrifos dissipation rate was influenced by the initial concentration when applied individually in biomixture P.In contrast,biomixture c was more effective at pendimethalin dissipation than biomixture P,since>76%of pendimethalin was dissipated in biomixture c versus 67%in biomixture P at the same incubation time.For thiophanate-methyl,the abilities of both biomixtures c and P were similar and less efficient than those of the other tested pesticides.The addition of the three tested pesticides to biomixture c only had a positive effect on both chlorpyrifos and thiophanate-methyl dissipation,while pendimethalin dissipation was similar when applied separately or as a mix.Microbial activity was stimulated by the addition of separately or mixed pesticides to biomixtures c and P as measured by dehydrogenase activity.

The dynamics of color signals in male threespine sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus

Body coloration and color patterns are ubiquitous throughout the animal kingdom and vary between and within species. Recent studies have dealt with individual dynamics of various aspects of coloration, as it is in many cases a flexible trait and changes in color expression may be context-dependent. During the reproductive phase, temporal changes of coloration in the visible spectral range (400–700 nm) have been shown for many animals but corresponding changes in the ultraviolet (UV) waveband (300–400 nm) have rarely been studied. Threespine sticklebackGasterosteus aculeatusmales develop conspicuous orange–red breeding coloration combined with UV reflectance in the cheek region. We investigated dynamics of color patterns including UV throughout a male breeding cycle, as well as short-term changes in coloration in response to a computer-animated rival using reflectance spectrophotometry and visual modeling, to estimate how colors would be perceived by conspecifics. We found the orange–red component of coloration to vary during the breeding cycle with respect to hue (theta/R50) and intensity (achieved chroma/red chroma). Furthermore, color intensity in the orange–red spectral part (achieved chroma) tended to be increased after the presentation of an artificial rival. Dynamic changes in specific measures of hue and intensity in the UV waveband were not found. In general, the orange–red component of the signal seems to be dynamic with respect to color intensity and hue. This accounts in particular for color changes during the breeding cycle, presumably to signal reproductive status, and with limitations as well in the intrasexual context, most likely to signal dominance or inferiority.

PTEN in liver diseases and cancer

The phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/phosphatase and tensin homolog (PTEN)/Akt axis is a key signal transduction node that regulates crucial cellular functions, including insulin and other growth factors signaling, lipid and glucose metabolism, as well as cell survival and apoptosis. In this pathway, PTEN acts as a phosphoinositide phosphatase, which terminates PI3Kpropagated signaling by dephosphorylating PtdIns(3,4)P2 and PtdIns(3,4,5)P3. However, the role of PTEN does not appear to be restricted only to PI3K signaling antagonism, and new functions have been recently discovered for this protein. In addition to the well-established role of PTEN as a tumor suppressor, increasing evidence now suggests that a dysregulated PTEN expression and/or activity is also linked to the development of several hepatic pathologies. Dysregulated PTEN expression/activity is observed with obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, hepatitis B virus/hepatitis c virus infections, and abusive alcohol consumption, whereas mutations/deletions have also been associated with the occurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma. Thus, it appears that alterations of PTEN expression and activity in hepatocytes are common and recurrent molecular events associated with liver disorders of various etiologies. These recent f indings suggest that PTEN might represent a potential common therapeutic target for a number of liver pathologies.

Added value of molecular karyotype in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia

Background:Thanks to an improved therapeutic regimen in childhood B-cell precursor acute lymphoblastic leukemia(BcP-ALL),5 year-overall survival now exceeds 90%.Unfortunately,the 25%of children who relapse have an initial poor prognosis,potentially driven by pre-existing or emerging molecular anomalies.The latter are initially and essentially identified by cytogenetics.However,some subtle alterations are not visible through karyotyping.Methods:Single nucleotide polymorphisms(SNP)array is an alternative way of chromosomal analysis allowing for a more in-depth evaluation of chromosomal modifications such as the assessment of copy number alterations(cNA)and loss of heterozygosity(LOH).This method was applied here in retrospective diagnosis/relapse paired samples from seven children with BcP-ALL and in a prospective cohort of 38 newly diagnosed childhood cases.Results:In the matched study,compared to the initial karyotype,SNP array analysis reclassified two patients as poor prognosis cases.Modulation during relapse was seen for 4 cNA and 0.9 LOH.In the prospective study,SNP reclassified the 10 patients with intermediate karyotype as 7 good prognosis and 3 poor prognosis.Ultimately,in all the children tested,SNP array allowed to identify additional anomalies compared to conventional karyotype,refine its prognostic value and identify some druggable anomalies that could be used for precision medicine.Overall,the anomalies detected could be segregated in four groups respectively involved in B-cell development,cell proliferation,transcription and molecular pathways.conclusion:SNP therefore appears to be a method of choice in the integrated diagnosis of BcP ALL,especially for patients initially classified as intermediate prognosis.This complementary method of both cytogenetics and high throughput sequencing allows to obtain further classified information and can be useful in case of failure of these techniques.

Recent studies have revealed that sexually selected traits may signal sperm quality and hence male fertilisation ability. There is also evidence that the expression of male sexual ornamentation and associated sperm characteristics depend on an individual’s ability to cope with oxidative stress. carotenoids are known for their antioxidant properties and carotenoid-based ornaments might represent honest signals as these pigments can be traded off between the investment in sexual ornamentation, sperm function as well as immune response. In this study, we examined the relationship between sexual ornamentation (breeding coloration) and sperm characteristics (e.g., velocity and morphology) in the three-spined sticklebackGasterosteus aculeatus, an externally fertilising fish species, in which sperm competition commonly occurs. During the breeding season males are sperm limited and develop a conspicuous carotenoid-based coloration, which is under strong pre-copulatory sexual selection due to female mate choice and male-male competition. The results of the present study show that the expression of stickleback male breeding coloration is significantly positively associated with the linearity of sperm movement, whereas sperm morphology (head length to tail length ratio) is significantly negatively related to the trajectory of sperm movement. Moreover, there is some support for the phenotype-linked fertility hypothesis as the intensity of male red breeding coloration is significantly positively correlated with sperm velocity, which is supposed to be an important determinant of fertilisation success in external fertilisers, indicating the honesty of the sexually selected nuptial red coloration.
