Diarrhea after bariatric procedures:Diagnosis and therapy

Diarrhea after bariatric procedures, mainly those with malabsorptive elements including Roux-Y Gastric Bypass and Biliopancreatic Diversion, is common and an essential determinant of quality of life and microand macronutrient deficiencies. Bariatric surgery is the only sustainably successful method to address morbid obesity and its comorbidities, particularly gaining more and more importance in the specific treatment of diabetic patients. Approximately half a million procedures are annually performed around the world, with numbers expected to rise drastically in the near future. A multitude of factors exert their influence on bowel habits; preoperative comorbidities and procedure-related aspects are intertwined with postoperative nutritional habits. Diagnosis may be challenging owing to the characteristics of postbariatric surgery anatomy with hindered accessibility of excluded segments of the small bowel and restriction at the gastric level. conventional testing measures, if available, generally yield low accuracy and are usually not validated in this specific population. Limited trials of empiric treatment are a practical alternative and oftentimes an indispensable part of the diagnostic process. This review provides an overview of causes for chronic post-bariatric surgery diarrhea and details the particularities of its diagnosis and treatment in this specific patient population. Topics of current interest such as the impact of gut microbiota and the influence of bile acids on morbid obesity and especially their role in diarrhea are highlighted in order to provide a better understanding of the specific problems and chances of future treatment in post-bariatric surgery patients.

Mimicking unfolding motion of a beetle hind wing

This paper presents an experimental research aiming to realize an artificial hind wing that can mimic the wing unfolding motion of Allomyrina dichotoma, an insect in coleopteran order. Based on the understanding of working principles of beetle wing folding/unfolding mechanisms, the hind wing unfolding motion is mimicked by a combination of creative ideas and state-of-art artificial muscle actuator. In this work, we devise two types of artificial wings and the successfully demonstrate that they can be unfolded by actuation of shape memory alloy wires to provide actuation force at the wing base and along the leading edge vein. The folding/unfolding mechanisms may provide an insight for portable nano/micro air vehicles with morphing wings.

Therapeutic approaches to non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: past achievements and future challenges

BAcKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a leading cause of chronic liver injury and mortality in Western countries and china. However, as to date, there is no direct and effective therapy for this disease. The aim of this review is to analyze the key progress and challenges of main current therapeutic approaches in NAFLD. DATA SOURcE: We carried out a PubMed search of English-language articles relevant to NAFLD therapy. RESULTS: There are two major therapeutic strategies for NAFLD treatment: (1) lifestyle interventions (including weight reduction, dietary modification and physical exercise) and (2) pharmaceutical therapies. Lifestyle interventions, particularly chronic and moderate intensity exercise, are the most effective and recognized clinical therapies for NAFLD. For pharmaceutical therapies, although their effects and mechanisms have been extensively investigated in laboratory studies, they still need further tests and investigations in clinical human trials. cONcLUSION: Future advancement of NAFLD therapy should focus on the mechanistic studies on cell based and animal models and human clinical trials of exercise, as well as the combination of lifestyle intervention and pharmaceutical therapy specifically targeting main signaling pathways related to lipid metabolism, oxidative stress and inflammation.

This paper aims to examine the influence of thermal radiation on magnetohydrodynamics(MHD)convective two-phase flows through the asymmetric divergent channel under first-order velocity and thermal slip *** transformations are used to nondimensionalize the governed partial differential equations and then solved them numerically.A grid-independent test is done to check the consistency of the numerical method and then validated with existing published results in a limiting *** graphical illustrations are provided to explain the impacts of various emerging parameters on flow *** enhancement in particle velocity is observed with an increment in the velocity slip *** the temperature slip parameter improves a decrement in the fluid as well as particle temperature is *** increment in radiation parameter augments fluid *** type of flow has multifarious range applications like fluidized beds,gas cooling systems,polishing heart valves and internal cavities,etc.

Antioxidant and antimutagenic activities of bark extract of Terminalia arjuna

Objective:The alcoholic extract of stem bark of Terminalia arjuna（ALTA） was screened for antioxidant and antimutagenic（anticlastogenic） ***:Antioxidant property was determined by l,l,Diphynyl,2-Picryl hydrazyl（DPPH） assay,super oxide radical scavenging activity,lipid peroxidation assay and total polyphenolic content was determined by Folin-ciocalteau’s *** activity was evaluated using micronucleus test in mice. Results:The ALTA has shown potent antioxidant activity with Ec50 of 2.491±0.160,50.110±0.150 & 71.000±0.250 in DPPH assay,superoxide radical scavenging activity and lipid peroxidation assay, which is comparable with ascorbic acid with Ec50 of 2.471±0.140,40.500±0.390 and 63.000±0.360 *** micronucleus test,ALTA（100 & 200 mg/kg,p.o.） showed significant reduction in percentage of micronucleus in both polychromatic erythrocytes（PcE） and normochromatie erythrocytes（NcE） and also shown significant reduction in P/N ***:These results suggested that ALTA possess significant antioxidant and antimutagenic activity.

Fuzzy-Logic Based Multi-Sensory Quality Evaluation via communication Network

In this paper, a multi-sensory quality evaluation using an array of instruments to measure different sensory qualities is established via communication network. The network is used to transmit quality data to evaluation computer. And the network-induced delays between instruments and computer may have negative influence on final evaluation results. The main goal of this paper is to analyze network delays’ influence on evaluation results, and present a fuzzy-logic based solution to eliminate the impact and improve the precision of evaluation. And simulations are conducted to show the effectiveness of the proposed approach.
