Antiglycation and antioxidant activities of the crude extract and saponin fraction of Tribulus terrestris before and after microcapsule release

Objective:The present study investigated antiglycation and antioxidant activities of crude dry extract and saponin fraction of Tribulus terrestris.It also developed a method of microencapsulation and evaluated antiglycation and antioxidant activities of crude dry extract and saponin fraction before and after microcapsule release.Methods:Antiglycation activity was determined by relative electrophoretic mobility(REM),free amino groups and inhibition of advanced glycation end-product(AGE)formation.Antioxidant activity was determined by 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH),ferric ion-reducing antioxidant power(FRAP),nitric oxide(NO)and thiobarbituric acid reactive species(TBARS)tests.Microcapsules were prepared using maltodextrin as wall material and freeze-drying as encapsulation technique.Morphological characterization of microcapsules was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy,and encapsulation efficiency and microcapsule release were determined by total saponins released.Antiglycation and antioxidant assays were performed using crude dry extract and saponin fraction of T.terrestris before and after release.Results:Saponin fraction showed an increase of 32.8%total saponins.High-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis showed the presence of saponins in the obtained fraction.Antiglycation evaluation by REM demonstrated that samples before and after release presented antiglycation activity similar to bovine serum albumin treated with aminoguanidine.Additionally,samples inhibited AGE formation,highlighting treatment with saponin fraction after release(89.89%).Antioxidant tests demonstrated antioxidant activity of the samples.crude dry extract before encapsulation presented the highest activities in DPPH(92.00%)and TBARS(32.49%)assays.Saponin fraction before encapsulation in FRAP test(499μmol Trolox equivalent per gram of dry sample)and NO test(15.13μmol nitrite formed per gram of extract)presented the highest activities.conclusion:This study presented antiglycation activity of crude dry extract

Forest production and growth are obtained from statistical models that allow the generation of information at the tree or forest stand level.Although the use of regression models is common in forest measurement,there is a constant search for estimation procedures that provide greater accuracy.Recently,machine learning techniques have been used with satisfactory performance in measuring forests.However,methods such as Adaptive NeuroFuzzy Inference System(ANFIS)and Random Forest are relatively poorly studied for predicting the volume of wood in eucalyptus plantations in Brazil.Therefore,it is essential to check whether these techniques can provide gains in terms of accuracy.Thus,this study aimed to evaluate the use of Random Forest and ANFIS techniques in the prognosis of forest production.The data used come from continuous forest inventories carried out in stands of eucalyptus clones.The data were divided into 70%for training and 30%for validation.The algorithms used to generate rules in ANFIS were Subtractive clustering and Fuzzy-c-Means.Besides,training was done with the hybrid algorithm(descending gradient and least squares)with the number of seasons ranging from 1 to 20.Several RFs were trained,varying the number of trees from 50 to 850 and the number of observations by five leaves to 35.Artificial neural networks and decision trees were also trained to compare the feasibility of the techniques.The evaluation of the estimates generated by the techniques for training and validation was calculated based on the following statistics:correlation coefficient(r),relative Bias(RB),and the relative root mean square error(RRMSE)in percentage.In general,the techniques studied in this work showed excellent performance for the training and validation data set with RRMSE values0.98.The RF presented inferior statistics about the ANFIS for the prognosis of forest production.The Subtractive clustering(Sc)and Fuzzy-c-Means(FcM)algorithms provide accurate baseline and volume projection estimates;both techniques

A three-dimensional mathematical hydrodynamic model associated with surface wave radiation by a floating rectangular box-type structure due to heave,sway,and roll motions in finite water depth is investigated based on small amplitude water wave theory and linear structural response.The analytical expressions for the radiation potentials,wave forces,and hydrodynamic coefficients are presented based on matched eigenfunction expansion method(MEFEM).The correctness of the analytical results of wave forces is compared with the construction of a numerical model using the open-source boundary element method code NEMOH.In addition,the present result is compared with the existing published experimental results available in the literature.The effects of the different design parameters on the floating box-type rectangular structure are studied by analyzing the vertical wave force,horizontal wave force,torque,added mass,and damping coefficients due to the heave,sway,and roll motions,and the comparison analysis between the forces is also analyzed in detail.Further,the effect of reflection and transmission coefficients by varying the structural width and drafts are analyzed.

Sociodemographic,biological,and psychosocial correlates of light-and moderate-to-vigorous-intensity physical activity during school time,recesses,and physical education classes

Background: Identifying factors associated with physical activity(PA) is useful in planning interventions and policies. The aim of this study was to identify sociodemographic, biological, and psychosocial factors associated with PA performed in school settings.Methods: data collected for the present study included gender, age, socioeconomic status, body fat percentage, aerobic fitness, self-efficacy, attitudes,peer and parental support, and perception of school environment. Dependent variables were light-intensity PA(lPA) and moderate-to-vigorousintensity PA(MVPA) performed during school time, recesses, and physical education(PE) classes. Multiple regression analyses were performed.Results: Participating adolescents(n = 567, 53% female, 12.9 ± 5.3 years) spent 5% of school time in MVPA and 27% in lPA, 15% of recesses in MVPA and 44% in lPA, and 16% of PE classes in MVPA and 41% in lPA. Boys engaged in more MVPA in all categories. Age was inversely related with MVPA and lPA in all periods, whereas body fat percentage was inversely related with MVPA in school time and PE classes. Attitude was inversely related with MVPA in all periods and with lPA in recesses. considering PA to be good and enjoyable was positively associated with MVPA in school time.conclusion: Adolescents spent little time in PA during school. Future interventions should implement enjoyable activities at school.

The aim of this work was to evaluate arbuscular mycorrhizal(AM)fungi as soil indicators and the mycorrhization of native and exotic tree species planted in the Acaraúbasin,a transition area from the coast to the Brazilian semiarid region.Plots with 6-year-old trees of four native and three non-native species as well as one non-forested area were evaluated in terms of the diversity of AM fungi in the mycorrhizosphere and the root colonization by AM and ectomycorrhizal(EcM)fungi.Twenty-four AM fungi were identified;claroideoglomus etunicatum,Glomus sinuosum,Paraglomus albidum,Acaulospora laevis,and Acaulospora brasiliensis were abundant in the forest soil.Diversity,dominance,evenness and richness indices of AM fungi were higher in plots with native trees.All root samples were colonized by AM fungi and only A nadenanthera colubrina,Acacia mangium,casuarina equisetifolia and Eucalyptus urophylla formed associations with EcM fungi.Acaulospora morphotypes served as soil indicators for coverings with the native species Astronium fraxinifolium and colubrina glandulosa.Exotic species may favor the proliferation of rarer AM fungi.These fungi–plant relationships may be important in the management of forest systems,and the evidence with mycorrhizal associations allows the inclusion of Brazilian species in tropical reforestation.

Short-term effect of physical activity on sleep health:A population-based study using accelerometry

Background:Regular physical activity(PA) is an important behavior in improving sleep health.However,the short-term effects of PA on sleep are still controversial.This study aimed to verify the effect of different intensities of PA practiced in different periods of the day on the subsequent sleep night in a population-based cohort of young adults.Methods::Prospective analyses were conducted for PA performed during the day and its effect on the following sleep night using data from the22-year follow-up of the 1993 Pelotas Birth cohort in Brazil(mean age of participants-22.6 years).Wrist-worn accelerometry was usedto measure both PA and sleep parameters.Regarding intensity,we analyzed the sleep effect of light PA(lPA),moderate PA,and vigorous PA,stratified by sex.Sleep variables were sleep time window(STW;the difference between sleep onset and sleep end),total sleep time(TST;the sum of minutes classified as sleep in STW),and sleep percent(SP;SP=(TST/STW);expressed in percentage).We performed generalized estimating equations using Stata software.Results::The means of STW,TST,and SP were 443.6 min/day,371.1 min/day,and 84%,respectively.Time spent in moderate PA and vigorous PA in the morning and afternoon was not associated with sleep variables.Among men,10 min/day of morning lPA increased TST by2.56 min/day.Among women,10 min/day of morning lPA increased SP by 0.15 percentage points.Afternoon lPA also increased SP by 0.09 percentage points for women.Night PA seems to have an inverse effect on sleep variables for any intensity and both sexes.conclusion::The effect of PA on sleep health is intrinsically related to the period of the day in which it is performed.The effect magnitude is different between sexes.For better sleep health,it is preferable that PA be performed during the day.

A Parameter-Space Analysis of the Rikitake System

We investigate analytically and numerically the dynamics of the Rikitake system.The Routh–Hurwitz criterion is used to study the stability of the equilibrium points of the differential equation system model,as functions of two parameters.The dynamics of the model are numerically studied using diagrams that associate colors to the largest lyapunov exponent value,in two-dimensional parameter spaces.Additionally,phase-space plots and bifurcation diagrams are used to distinguish periodic and chaotic attractors.

The high energy demand we currently face in society and the subsequent large consumption of fossil fuels cause its depletion and increase the pollution levels.The quest for the production of clean energy from renewable and sustainable sources remains open.The conversion of solar energy into hydrogen via the water-splitting process,assisted by pho tores pons ive semiconductor catalysts,is one of the most promising technologies.Significant progress has been made on water splitting in the past few years and a variety of photocatalysts active not only under ultra-violet(UV) light but especially with the visible part of the electromagnetic spectrum have been developed.layered double hydroxides(lDH)-based materials have emerged as a promising class of nanomaterials for solar energy applications owing to their unique layered structure,compositional flexibility,tunable bandgaps,ease of synthesis and low manufacturing costs.This review covers the most recent research dedicated to lDH materials for photocatalytic water-splitting applications and encompasses a range of synthetic strategies and post-modifications used to enhance their performance.Moreover,we provide a thorough discussion of the experimental conditions crucial to obtaining improved photoactivity and highlight the impact of some specific parameters,namely,catalysts loading,cocatalysts,sacrificial agents,and irradiation sources.This review provides the necessary tools to select the election technique for adequately enhancing the photoactivity of lDH and modified lDH-based materials and concludes with a critical summary that outlines further research directions.

Efficiency of soil-applied ^(67)Zn-enriched fertiliser across three consecutive crops

A very small amount of applied zinc(Zn) is taken up by crops, resulting in low recovery by plants. Adding elemental sulphur to zinc oxide(ZnO) fertiliser could improve Zn solubilisation and exert a higher residual effect on crops than soluble Zn sources. We produced an isotopically labelled Zn-elemental sulphur fertiliser and evaluated its performance in comparison to traditional Zn sources during sequential crop cultivation. Three ^(67)Zn-labelled fertilisers,ZnO, zinc sulphate(ZnSO_(4)), and ZnO co-granulated with elemental sulphur(ZnOS^(0)), were soil applied, and their contributions to the uptake of Zn by three consecutive crops, wheat, ryegrass, and corn, were assessed in a 294-d pot experiment. The contributions of Zn fertilisers followed the order: ZnSO_(4) > ZnO= ZnOS^(0). The relative contributions of Zn fertilisers were lower in the first crop than in the subsequent crops. The overall recovery of applied Zn by the three crops was higher for ZnSO_(4) than for ZnO and ZnOS^(0), reaching 1.56%, 0.45%, and 0.33% of the applied Zn, respectively. Zinc recovery by plants was very low, regardless of the source of Zn. Adding elemental sulphur to ZnO did not increase its effectiveness up to 294 d after application. Fertiliser contribution was higher for the subsequent crops than for the initial crop, indicating the importance of assessing the residual effects of Zn fertilisers.

Techno-functionality of fisetin-enriched yoghurt fermented with lactobacillus acidophilus bio-capsules produced via osmoporation

Osmoporation is a novel encapsulation approach for bioactive compounds based on the osmoresistance mechanisms of microbial cells.To the best of our knowledge,this is the first study investigating the production of fisetin-enriched yoghurt using lactobacillus acidophilus-based bio-capsules via osmoporation as the starter culture.Results showed that the milk acidification with fisetin-loaded l.acidophilus progressed at a slower pace due to complex mechanisms induced by osmopo-ration and internalized fisetin.Milk fermentation using fisetin bio-capsules reached a maximum acidification rate of 0.18 pH units/h after 23 h and pH 4.6 was achieved after 32 h.Besides,the antioxidant activity of yoghurts produced with fisetin bio-capsules did not change during cold storage,while the antioxidant activity of yoghurt produced with non-encapsulated fisetin was reduced by 2.5-fold after 28 days.Overall,this study shows that fisetin osmoporation using l.acidophilus is a versatile encapsulation bioprocess that enables the delivery of preserved phytoactives into fermented foods like yoghurt.This strategy has the potential to be extended to other applications in the dairy industry using lactic acid bacteria as both the encapsulation matrix and fermentation agent.
