Purpose: liver iron is frequently elevated in chronic hepatitis c and may con tribute to liver injury. The pathophysiology behind this phenomenon may involve hepcidin, a gene that is up- regulated in the liver by inflammation and iron. I nappropriately low hepcidin is important to the pathophysiology of hereditary he mochromatosis. However, the role of hepcidin in the iron loading of patients wit h hepatitis c is unknown. Subjects and Methods: To determine whether liver hepci din mRNA correlates with markers of hepatic inflammation and iron status in pati ents with hepatitis c, we extracted total RNA from liver biopsy specimens of pat ients with chronic hepatitis c and quantified hepcidin mRNA. liver hepcidin mRNA levels were then correlated with aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotrans ferase, ferritin, viral load, fibrosis, hepatic iron concentration, and Hepatic Activity Index (HAI). Results: Among patients with hepatitis c, there was a sign ificant correlation of hepcidin mRNA expression in the liver with hepatic iron c oncentration and serum ferritin (r = 0.72, P = 0.006, and r = 0.60, P = 0.01, re spectively). Hepcidin mRNA expression in the liver did not correlate with aspart ate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, HAI, or viral load. No differenc es in hepcidin mRNA were found based on viral genotype or the presence of fibros is. conclusion: In contrast to other inflammatory states, hepcidin mRNA expressi on in the liver was independent of markers of inflammation in hepatitis c. Inste ad, our results suggest that iron stores in patients with hepatitis c regulate h epcidin expression and that iron loading in chronic hepatitis c is not due to in appropriate hepcidin expression.

Plausible cloth animation using dynamic bending model

Simulating the mechanic.l.behavior of a cloth is a very challenging and important problem in computer animation. The models of bending in most existing cloth simulation approaches are taking the assumption that the cloth is little deformed from a plate shape. Therefore, based on the thin-plate theory, these bending models do not consider the condition that the current shape of the cloth under large deformations cannot be regarded as the approximation to that before deformation, which leads to an unreal static bending. [This paper introduces a dynamic bending model which is appropriate to describe large out-plane deformations such as cloth buc.l.ng and bending, and develops a compact implementation of the new model on spring-mass systems. Experimental results show that wrinkles and folds generated using this technique in cloth simulation, can appear and vanish in a more natural way than other approaches.]

3D FINITE ElEMENT ANAlYSIS OF THE DAMAGE EFFEcTS ON THE DENTAl cOMPOSITE SUBJEcT TO WATER SORPTION

The damage effects of water sorption on the mechanic.l.properties of the hydroxyapatite particle reinforced Bis-GMA/TEGDMA copolymer （HA/Bis-GMA/TEGDMA） h-ave been predicted using 3D finite c.l. models. The plasticizer effect on the polymer matrix was considered as a variation of its Young＇s modulus. Three different c.l. models were used to determine the influence of varying particle contents, interphase strength and moisture concentration on the debonding damage. The stress distribution pattern has been examined and the stress transfer mode clarified. The Young＇s modulus and fracture strength of the Bis-GMA/TEGDMA composite were also predicted using the model with and without consideration of the damage. ine Iormer results with consideration of the debonding damage are in good agreement with existing literature experimental data. The shielding effect of our proposed model and an alternative approach were discussed. The Fcc c.l. model has also been extended to predict the critic.l.load for the damaged and the undamaged composite subject to the 3-point flexural test.

Peripheral nerve injuries induce a severe motor and sensory deficit. Since the availability of autologous nerve transplants for nerve repair is very limited, alternative treatment strategies are sought, including the use of tubular nerve guidance conduits(tNGcs). However, the use of tNGcs results in poor functional recovery and central necrosis of the regenerating tissue, which limits their application to short nerve lesion defects(typic.l.y shorter than 3 cm). Given the importance of vasc.l.rization in nerve regeneration, we hypothesized that enabling the growth of blood vessels from the surrounding tissue into the regenerating nerve within the tNGc would help eliminate necrotic processes and lead to improved regeneration. In this study, we reported the application of macroscopic holes into the tubular walls of silk-based tNGcs and compared the various features of these improved silk^(+) tNGcs with the tubes without holes(silk^(–) tNGcs) and autologous nerve transplants in an 8-mm sciatic nerve defect in rats. Using a combination of micro-computed tomography and histologic.l.analyses, we were able to prove that the use of silk^(+) tNGcs induced the growth of blood vessels from the adjacent tissue to the intraluminal neovasc.l.r formation. A significantly higher number of blood vessels in the silk^(+) group was found compared with autologous nerve transplants and silk^(–), accompanied by improved axon regeneration at the distal coaptation point compared with the silk^(–) tNGcs at 7 weeks postoperatively. In the 15-mm(critic.l.size) sciatic nerve defect model, we again observed a distinct ingrowth of blood vessels through the tubular walls of silk^(+) tNGcs, but without improved functional recovery at 12 weeks postoperatively. Our data proves that macroporous tNGcs increase the vasc.l.r supply of regenerating nerves and fac.l.tate improved axonal regeneration in a short-defect model but not in a critic.l.size defect model. NUMERIc.l.SIMUlATION OF SUccINONITRITE DENDRITIc GROWTH IN A FORcED FlOW

Numeric.l.simulation based on phase field method is performed to describe solidification process of pure material in a free or forced flow. The evolution of the interface is showed, and the effects of mesh grid and flow velocity on succinonitrite shape are studied. These results indicate that crystal grows into an equiaxial dendrite in a free flow and into an asymmetric.l.dendritic in a forced flow. With increasing flow velocity, the upstream dendritic arm tip grows faster and the downstream arm grows slower. However, the evolution of the perpendic.l.r tip has no significant change. In addition, mesh grid has no influence on dendritic growth shape when mesh grid is above 300×300.

The basic clinic.l.diagnostic framework synergized

Objective To develop a diagnostic framework that would help defining clinic.l.problems by the expanded understanding with traditional chinese medicine (c Med) and western medicine (W Med).Methods The basic attributes of diagnosis and the use of diagnostic techniques of W Med and c Med are reviewed. Some of the various diagnostic.l.bels and their meanings are also preliminarily reviewed. A consolidatory approach is made to synergize the usefulness of the two disciplines based on the principles of the two *** The application and use of the framework are discussed and propositions are made. The synergized diagnostic platform represents a starting effort to form a unified basis to exchange clinic.l.diagnosis between W Med and c Med. Such framework may fac.l.tate looking for new treatment modalities and results can be compared across different centres.

SIMUlATION-MEASUREMENT INVERSION OF ENVIRONMENT PARAMETERS DURING WElDING

The manual selection of environment parameters during welding simulation will bring a significant error to the simulation result of welding temperature field. By a combination of finite element method （FEM） and infrared thermography, these environment parameters were inversed mathematic.l.y in place of previous manual selection. First, FEM model of the welding process was constructed, and the temperature field was computed with initial environment parameters. Then, a real welding process was conducted and the temperature field was measured by infrared thermography. last, the simulation and measurement results were compared, and the environment parameters were adjusted continuously with the genetic algorithm （ GA ） until the simulation matched the measurement best. Parameters according to the best-matched simulation results were considered as the most appropriate parameters.

The mechanisms of la in heavy rail steel were studied by means of experimental measurements, microstructure observation and theoretic.l.analysis in the present work. For heavy rail steel, the state and the content of la were measured, and the mechanisms and the effects of la on sulfide inclusions, microstracture and properties of steel were determined. Strip-like sulfides disappear in heavy rail steel with la/（O＋S）〉3.50, which is shown that the metallurgic.l.function of modifying sulfide inclusions has been achieved by la. la can fine the grain size of the austenite in heavy rail steel. Under the experimental condition, the plasticity and the impacting toughness of heavy rail steel with 0.005wt% la can evidently be improved.
