Maximizing biomass utilization: An integrated strategy for coproducing multiple chemicals

Lignocellulosic biomass is one of the viable solutions to alleviate the global warming. However, the limited utilization of biomass majorly focused on cellulose and hemicellulose restricts the economic and environmental feasibilities. To cope with this issue, we proposed an integrated process of co-producing 1,6-hexanediol（1,6-HDO） with tetrahydrofuran and adipic acid from biomass, referred to as Strategy A. To compare the impacts of lignin upgrading and feedstock, Strategy B, which co-produces tetrahydrofuran alone, and Strategy c, which is the traditional route to produce 1,6-HDO from fossil fuels, were used. Heat networks are also designed to reduce operating costs and indirect carbon emissions due to energy consumption, saving 87% and 83% of the heat and cooling requirements, respectively, in Strategy A. The market competitiveness of Strategy A was evaluated by determining the minimum selling price through techno-economic analysis, and sustainability was thoroughly investigated by quantifying the environmental impacts through both midpoint and endpoint life-cycle assessments（LcAs）.Strategy A was found to be the most favorable both economically（USRDScHARDOLLAR3,402/ton） and environmentally（-26.9 kg cO2eq.）. This indicates that lignin valorization is not only economically but also environmentally preferred. Finally, changes in economic and environmental feasibilities depending on economic, process, and environmental parameters were investigated using sensitivity and uncertainty analyses. The results of these analyses provide valuable insight into bio-based chemical production.

The AlMcM-41 molecular sieves with two different pore sizes are hydrothermally synthesized in the presence of surfactants with two different chain lengths. H-AlMcM-41 and Ru-Sn-B/H-AlMcM-41 which are prepared by the conventional ion-exchange and incipient wetness techniques of the AlMcM-41 show fair catalytic activity for esterification of glycerol by oleic acid and selective hydrogenation of oleic acid methylester, respectively.

Understanding super-enhancers

Super-enhancers are defined as cluster of enhancers with dense TF binding, which can activate proximal cell-identity gene expression. Here we review the identification, func- tional significance of super-enhancers, and their relation- ships with cancer. With the current intense interests in su- per-enhancers, more super-enhancers will be defined and studied in different cell types and tissues and in different developmental and biological contexts to reveal molecular mechanisms of their functions.

A guide to shortening the time from submission to publication in Frontiers of Environmental Science & Engineering

Authors want to publish their work as soon as ***,the manuscript processing time increases if the manuscript does not meet the journal *** analysis of manuscripts submitted to Frontiers o f Environmental Science&Engineering from November 2018 to july 2019 shows that the processing time was increased up to 33 days because the manuscripts:(1)had inconsistent formatting of citations,references,and units,(2)exceeded the word limit,(3)were missing information such as the graphical abstract,(4)plagiarized other papers,and(5)had too many tables and ***,we explain how authors can avoid these issues and decrease the manuscript processing time.

Laser ablation and structuring of cdZnTe with femtosecond laser pulses

We report an experimental investigation on laser ablation and associated surface structuring of cdZnTe by femtosecond Ti:Sa laser pulses(laser wavelengthλ≈800 nm,≈35 fs,10 Hz),in *** exploiting different static irradiation conditions,the fluence threshold and the incubation effect in cdZnTe are ***,surface treatment with a low laser fluence(laser pulse energy E≈5-10_μj)and number of shots(5cracks in the central part of the shallow crater,which is likely associated to a different thermal expansion coefficients of Te inclusions and matrix during the sample heating and cooling processes ensuing femtosecond laser *** with a larger number of pulses(N≈500,1000)with higher pulse energies(E≈30-50μj)results in the formation of welldefined laser-induced periodic surface structures(LIPSS)in the outskirts of the main crater,where the local fluence is well below the material ablation *** low spatial frequency and high spatial frequency LIPSS perpendicular to the laser polarization are found together and separately depending on the irradiation *** are ascribed to a process of progressive aggregation of randomly distributed nanoparticles produced during laser ablation of the deep crater in the region of the target irradiated by a fluence below the ablation threshold with many laser pulses.

Full waveform inversion based on the ensemble Kalman filter method using uniform sampling without replacement

Full waveform inversion(FWI) has been increasingly more and more important in seismology to better understand the interior structure of the Earth. FWI, by taking advantage of both the traveltime and amplitude in the data, provides high-resolution model parameters of the earth which can produce images with high resolution. However, this inversion method conventionally suffers from non-uniqueness due to many local minima of the objective function and large computing costs. In this study, we propose a new FWI method in a semi-random framework by integrating the ensemble Kalman filter and uniform sampling without replacement. Numerical results demonstrate that the new method can achieve highresolution results and a wider convergence domain. Accordingly, the new method overcomes the disadvantage of conventional FWIs that depend strongly on the initial model.

cell membrane coating for reducing nanoparticle-induced inflammatory responses to scaffold constructs

The controlled release of therapeutics from microparticles or nanoparticles （NPs） has been well-studied. Incorporation of these particles inside biomaterial scaffolds is promising for tissue regeneration and immune modulation. However, these particles may induce inflammatory and foreign body responses to scaffold constructs, limiting their applications. Here we show that widely used poly（lactic-co-glycolic acid） nanoparticles （PLGA NPs） formed by double emulsion dramatically increased neutrophil infiltration and pro-inflammatory cytokines in alginate scaffolds 1 day after the subcutaneous injection of the scaffolds into mice. The coating of red blood cell （RBc） membranes on PLGA NPs completely eliminated these short-term inflammatory responses. For a longer term of 10 days, neither PLGA NPs nor RBc membrane-coated NPs exerted a significant effect on the infiltration of neutrophils or macrophages in alginate scaffolds, possibly due to the degradation and/or clearance of NPs by infiltrating cells. Despite the extensive exploration of cell membrane-coated NPs, our study is the first to investigate the effects of cell membrane coating on foreign body reaction to NPs. By harnessing the natural biocompatibility of cell membranes, our strategy of anti-inflammatory protection for scaffolds may be pivotal for many applications such as those relying on the recruitment of stem cells and/or progenitor ceils to scaffolds.

Selective catalytic reduction （ScR） of NOx with NH3 is an effective technique to remove NOx from stationary sources, such as coal-fired power plant and industrial boilers. Some of elements in the fly ash deactivate the catalyst due to strong chemisorptions on the active sites. The poisons may act by simply blocking active sites or alter the adsorption behaviors of reactants and products by an electronic interaction. This review is mainly focused on the chemical poisoning on V2O5-based catalysts, environmental-benign catalysts and low temperature catalysts. Several common poisons including alkali/alkaline earth metals, SO2 and heavy metals etc. are referred and their poisoning mechanisms on catalysts are discussed. The regeneration methods of poisoned catalysts and the development of poison-resistance catalysts are also compared and analyzed. Finally, future research directions in developing poisoning resistance catalysts and facile efficient regeneration methods for ScR catalysts are proposed.

Numerical investigation of the failure mechanism of cubic concrete specimens in SHPB tests

Experimental study of a novel heat sink for distribution level static synchronous compensator cooling

In this paper, a novel heat sink which coupling natural convection and phase transition was designed to meet the cooling requirements of distribution level static synchronous compensator(DSTATcOM). The two inclined evaporation substrates can meet the requirements for the parallel operation of DSTATcOM and the working medium R245 fa was driven by gravity and buoyancy in the heat sink. The influence of filling ratio and heating power on the thermal performance of the heat sink was investigated experimentally and theoretically. The experimental results showed that the filling ratio and heating power had a significant influence on the thermal performance of the heat sink. At the ambient temperature of 25℃, the heat sink could start up successfully at different heating power and filling ratio. Meanwhile, the heat sink achieved good heat dissipation performance as the maximum temperature of two evaporation substrates were 60.14℃ and 67.85℃ while the heating power was 3000 Wand the filling ratio was 80%. The heat transfer resistance between two evaporation substrates and condensation substrates were6.6×10^-3℃/W and 1.2×10^-2℃/W at the same working condition. Additionally, the experimental results showed a good agreement with the calculated results.
