Debris flows occurring on Klapperhorn Mountain in the Yellowhead Pass in the canadian Rocky Mountains pose a significant hazard to railway operations at the base of the mountain. The size (volume) and travel distance of these debris flows play an important role in assessing the risk to the railway. GIS analysis, airphoto interpretation together with field work were undertaken on two debris flows located at track mileage 54.0 and 54.3. characteristics of these two debris flow events were analyzed, including debris flow path morphology and event behavior. Their sizes and travel distances were estimated using an empirical-statistical model (UBcDFLOW) under different initiation conditions. Their potential impact on the railway bridge was evaluated using a bridge blockage ratio.

Very long chain-saturated and-polyunsaturated fatty acids(VLc-SFA and VLc-PUFA, respectively) are a functionally important class of fatty acids containing 28 carbons or more in their acyl chain. They are synthesized by the elongation of very long fatty acids-4(ELOVL4) enzyme, expressed mainly in the brain, retina, skin, testes, and meibomian gland, where these fatty acids are found(Agbaga et al., 2008). Further, these organs exhibit tissuespecific VLc-PUFA and VLc-SFA biosynthesis and incorporation into complex lipids for specific functions. In the brain, skin, and Meibomian glands, the ELOVL4 mainly makes VLc-SFA, which are incorporated into complex sphingolipids. In the retina, the ELOVL4 makes VLc-PUFA that are incorporated into phosphatidylcholine, that are critical for visual function, while in testes and sperm, the VLc-PUFA are incorporated into sphingolipids that are critical for fertility(Yeboah et al., 2021).

The páramo of the Northern Andes provide critically important ecosystem services to the Northern Andean region in the form of water provisioning and carbon sequestration, both of which are a result of the páramo?s organic-rich soils. Little is known, however, about the hydro-geomorphic characteristics of the rivers that drain these ecosystems. With impending plans for widespread hydro-development and increasing implementation of carbon-sequestering compensation for ecosystem services programs in the region it is imperative that we develop a thorough understanding of the hydrogeomorphic role that rivers play in this unique ecosystem. The objective of this study was to quantify bank erosion along an Amazonian headwater stream draining a small, relatively undisturbed páramo catchment to gain a better understanding of the natural erosion regime and the resulting sediment contributions from this unique ecosystem. This study implemented a combination of field, laboratory, and Geographic Information Systems techniques to quantify bank erosion rates and determine a bank erosion sediment yield from the Ningar River, a small páramo catchment(22.7 km^2) located in the eastern Andean cordillera of Ecuador. Results show that bank erosion rates range from 3.0 to ≥ 390.0 mm/yr, are highly episodic, and yield at least 487 tons of sediment annually to the Ningar River. These results imply that 1) páramo ecosystems substantially contribute to the sediment load of the Amazon River basin; 2) bank erosion is a potentially significant flux component of basin-scale carbon cycles in páramo ecosystems; and 3) hydrologic alteration campaigns(dam building) will likely critically alter these contributions and concomitantly disconnect a critical source of sediment and nutrients to downstream ecosystems.

Many microfungi are able to live in living plant *** contrast to plant pathogens and parasites the socalled endophytic fungi do not cause obvious disease symptoms in their ***,they constitute an ubiquitous active component in direct and multitrophic *** present study was conducted to assess the level of overlap of cultivable microfungi in living and decaying tissues of European Beech(Fagus sylvatica L.)from a forest stand in North-Eastern *** focus lay on the hypothesized fall-spring relationship of leaf-inhabiting forest endophytes,which means that endophytes from autumn leaves persist as saprobes in litter or dead wood,sporulate and re-invade living leaves in *** cultures were isolated from living leaves,leaf litter and dead wood still attached to the tree by dilution-to-extinction cultivation in the years 2007–*** of species identity,species richness and species composition were based on microscopic identification and of sequencing the fungal DNA‘barcode’ITS(internal transcribed spacer).Species richness of litter-inhabiting microfungi equaled that of wood-inhabiting fungi and exceeded that of leaf *** most distinctive species assemblage was observed on wood,fungal species composition in living leaves and leaf litter were also significantly different from each *** the other hand a considerable compositional and phylogenetic overlap between leaf and litter fungi was revealed with phylogenetics,cluster analysis and non-metric multidimensional *** taxa accounting most to the similarity between living and decaying leaves belonged to capnodiales,Xylariales,Diaporthales and ***,data from cultivated leaf-inhabiting beech endophytes were compared with a fungal 454 sequence data set from beech *** analysis allowed the partition of species lists into active fungal endophytes,fungal“epiphytes”and dormant fungal propagules.

The development of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells(LT-SOFcs)is of significant importance for realizing the widespread application of *** has stimulated a substantial materials research effort in developing high oxide-ion conductivity in the electrolyte layer of *** this context,for the first time,a dielectric material,cacu_(3)Ti_(4)O_(12)(ccTO)is designed for LT-SOFcs electrolyte application in this *** individual ccTO and its heterostructure materials with a p-type Ni_(0.8)co_(0.15)Al_(0.05)LiO_(2−δ)(NcAL)semiconductor are evaluated as alternative electrolytes in LT-SOFc at 450–550℃.The single cell with the individual ccTO electrolyte exhibits a power output of approximately 263 mW cm^(-2) and an open-circuit voltage(OcV)of 0.95 V at 550℃,while the cell with the ccTO–NcAL heterostructure electrolyte capably delivers an improved power output of approximately 605 mW cm^(-2) along with a higher OcV over 1.0 V,which indicates the introduction of high hole-conducting NcAL into the ccTO could enhance the cell performance rather than inducing any potential short-circuiting *** is found that these promising outcomes are due to the interplay of the dielectric material,its structure,and overall properties that led to improve electrochemical mechanism in ccTO–***,density functional theory calculations provide the detailed information about the electronic and structural properties of the ccTO and NcAL and their heterostructure ccTO–*** study thus provides a new approach for developing new advanced electrolytes for LT-SOFcs.

The benefits of regular physical activity are well ***,few studies have examined the effectiveness of integrating physical activity(PA)into curricula within a post-secondary *** investigate the incorporation of PA into medical curriculum,we developed a series of optional exercise-based review sessions designed to reinforce musculoskeletal(MSK)anatomy course *** synchronous sessions were co-taught by a group fitness instructor and an anatomy *** fitness instructor would lead students through both strength and yoga style exercises,while the anatomy instructor asked questions about relevant anatomical structures related to course material previously *** the sessions,participants were asked to evaluate the classes on their self-reported exam preparedness in improving MSK anatomy knowledge,PA levels,and mental *** participants completed surveys;a majority agreed that the classes increased understanding of MSK concepts(90.0%)and activity levels(97.7%).Many(70.0%)felt that the classes helped reduce *** majority of respondents(90.0%)agreed that the classes contributed to increased feelings of social ***,medical students saw benefit in PA based interventions to supplement MSK course *** with increasing activity levels and promoting health behaviours,integrating PA into medical curriculum may improve comprehension of learning material,alleviate stress and foster social connectivity among medical students.
