Physician Perception and Practice of Electroencephalography in Enugu, south East Nigeria

Background: Electroencephalography (EEG) is established for evaluating several acute and chronic medical conditions of neurological basis. In much of Nigeria and Africa, it is largely unavailable and underutilized due to scarcity of neurologists and high costs of the equipment. It offers a relatively simple and efficient way to help manage many encephalopathies if well utilized in trained hands. Aim: This study aimed to determine how physicians practicing in Enugu perceive and utilize electroencephalography routinely. Method: Physicians attending a statewide meeting in Enugu in August 2018 were consecutively recruited and a pretested questionnaire was administered after obtaining prior consent. sociodemographic data as well as their knowledge, attitude and practice of electroencephalography were documented and analyzed. Results: There were 486 respondents (males 335: females 151) and 345 (71%) were specialists in various disciplines while 141 (29%) were general practitioners. Only 7 doctors (1.4%) claimed ignorance of electroencephalography and 6 (1.2%) stated it was not useful. Majority, 333 doctors (69.1%) believed it had no impact on routine patient management. This perception was highest for Dental surgery (100%) and lowest for Internal Medicine (23%) specialists. Most doctors (425, 87.4%) agreed that neurologists should analyze recordings. Most physicians had no access to electroencephalography (61.7%) and had no interest in acquiring the machine (50.8%). conclusion: Electroencephalography is an underappreciated investigative modality amongst physicians in Enugu, despite a high burden of neurological diseases in the population. More education, training and awareness of its utility are needed for medical students and doctors to reverse the trend.

The fast-track repair of deteriorated concrete pavement requires materials that can be placed, cured, and opened to the traffic in a short period. Type III cement and calcium sulfoaluminate （csA） cement are the most commonly used fast-setting hydraulic cement （FsHc）. In this study, the properties of Type III and csA cement concrete, including compressive strength, coefficient of thermal expansion （cTE） and shrinkage were evaluated. The test results indicate that compressive strength of FsHc concrete increased rapidly at the early age. csA cement concrete had higher early-age and long term strength. The shrinkage of csA cement concrete was lower than that of Type III cement concrete. Both csA and Type III cement concrete had similar cTE values. Based on the laboratory results, the csA cement was selected as the partial-depth rapid repair material for a distressed continuously reinforced concrete pavement. The data collected during and after the repair show that the csA cement concrete had good short-term and long-term performances and, therefore, was suitable for the rapid repair of concrete pavement.

Abundant coal resources that were previously neglected due to a crude oil boom need revitalisation and integration into the national electricity mix to address the energy demands of the Nigerian *** coal samples from the Benue Trough sedimentary basin in Nigeria were examined by various techniques,including proximate and ultimate analyses,organic petrography,Fourier transform infrared ray spectroscopy,and thermogravimetric *** on vitrinite reflectance,the Lafia-Obi(OLB),Garin Maiganga(GMG),Imiegba(IMG),and Okaba(OKB)coals are classified as subbituminous,while the Lamja1(LMJ1),Lamja2(LMJ2)and chikila(cHK)coals are high volatile B *** Enugu(ENG)coal is on the boundary between subbituminous and high volatile c *** petrographic results indicate vitrinite and fusinite contents steadily increase from the Lower Benue Trough coals to the Upper Benue Trough coals,while semifusinite and total mineral contents follow a reverse *** decomposition occurred in three stages,i.e.,drying,devolatilization,and coke formation above 700°c;and the coal reactivity follows the following order,ENG>IMG>IGH>cHK>LMJ>OKB>GMG>*** higher temperatures(above 900°c)are required to decompose the coals for efficient energy *** LMJ1,LMJ2,OLB,cHK,GMG,and OKB coals can be exploited for electricity power ***,the Imeagha and Enugu coals are best suitable for both cement and power generation.

In this paper, a concise but effective interface circuit for transforming a memristor into meminductive and memcapac- itive systems is designed. This newly proposed interface circuit, constructed by only two current conveyors, is equipped with three available ports, which can provide six connecting combinations in terms of one resistor, one capacitor, and one memristor. For the sake of confirming the design effectiveness, theoretical and simulation discussions are hence introduced and all the experimental waveforms provide conclusive evidence to validate the correctness of these new mutators. The most attractive features of this new interface circuit are the floating terminals and convenient practical implementation.

The boundary layer transition over a flat tilted plate has been studied by means of heat transfer measurements. A heat flux sensor has been developed, in order to measure the efficiency of convective heat transfer for various types of surfaces or flows. Its operation at constant temperature allows direct and fast measurements of heat flux. The present paper reports the development of the sensor and presents its application to the study of transition in a boundary layer depending on the angle of incidence of the external flow. An exponential relationship between critical Reynolds number and pressure gradient parameter has been found.

Members of Aurora kinase family are emerging as key regulators of centrosome function, chromosome segregation and cytokinesis. In mammals, three distinct Aurora kinase members (Aurora-A, -B, and -c) have been identified. Objective:To identify the prevalence of soil-transmitted helminthiasis(sTH)among school-age children in the cagayan Valley,the Philippines,assess their level of awareness on the disease,and determine predisposing factors of the ***:A total of 478 GradesⅢ-Ⅴschool-age children in Pamplona and sanchez-Mira school Districts in the cagayan Valley answered the questionnaire assessing their knowledge,attitude,and practices on sTH,subjected to anthropometric measurements,and provided faecal samples for parasitologic assessment(direct smear,Kato-Katz,and formol-ether concentration techniques).Results:The participants of the study,with 55.86%females,were 8 to 14 years *** nutritional status was assessed‘normal’(84.31%),‘severely wasted’(6.49%),‘wasted’(5.23%),‘overweight’(2.72%),and‘obese’(1.26%).The prevalence of infection with at least 1 sTH species was 25.99%in Pamplona and 19.40%in ***,the prevalence of heavy intensity was 7.11%for Ascaris lumbricoides and 1.67%for Trichuris *** hookworm infections had light *** majority of the school-age children had a low score in the KAP *** knowledge of sTH,‘stunted growth as a symptom of infection’was associated with a lower risk of Ascaris lumbricoides infection(OR 0.448;95%cI 0.212,0.945;P=0.035)while‘playing with soil as a mode of transmission’was associated with an increased risk of Ascaris lumbricoides infection(OR 2.067;95%cI 1.014,4.212;P=0.046).In attitude towards sTH,‘I think I have intestinal worm now’was associated with a higher risk of Ascaris lumbricoides infection(OR 1.681;95%cI 1.061,2.662;P=0.027).conclusions:The prevalence rate of Ascaris lumbricoides among the school-age children in the cagayan Valley shows the need to further intensify intervention in the area to meet the threshold set by the World Health *** identified predictors of infection,which concerns the school-age children’s knowledge and attitude toward sTH,can be used in augmenting

A linear semi-continuum model with discrete atomic layers in the thickness direction was developed to investigate the bending behaviors of ultra-thin beams with nanoscale *** theoretical results show that the deflection of an ultra-thin beam may be enhanced or reduced due to different relaxation *** the relaxation coefficient is greater/less than one,the deflection of micro/nano-scale structures is enhanced/reduced in comparison with macro-scale ***,two opposite types of size-dependent behaviors are observed and they are mainly caused by the relaxation *** with the classical continuum model,exact nonlocal stress model and finite element model （FEM） verify the validity of the present semi-continuum *** particular,an explanation is proposed in the debate whether the bending stiffness of a micro/nano-scale beam should be greater or weaker as compared with the macro-scale *** characteristics of bending stiffness are proved to be associated with the relaxation coefficients.

Insulin secreted by pancreatic islet ˇ-cells is the principal regulating hormone of glucose *** of insulin secretion may cause glucose to accumulate in the blood, and result in diabetes *** deterministic models of the insulin secretion pathway have been developed, the stochastic aspect of this biological pathway has not been explored. The first step in this direction presented here is a hybrid model of the insulin secretion pathway, in which the delayed rectifying Kcchannels are treated as stochastic events. This hybrid model can not only reproduce the oscillation dynamics as the deterministic model does, but can also capture stochastic dynamics that the deterministic model does not. To measure the insulin oscillation system behavior, a probability-based measure is proposed and applied to test the effectiveness of a new remedy.
