The Effec.s of Zinc.Sulfate on the in Vitro Digestibility of Feeds in c.rvids

The c.ptive white-tailed deer industry has an estimated impac. of 1.6 billion USD in the state of Texas alone. However, nutritional requirements for c.rvids are determined through researc. based on sheep and goats. The objec.ive of this study was to determine the effec.s of zinc.on differenc.s in dry matter digestibility in vitro for white-tailed does (Odoc.ileus virginianus). Deer (n = 2) were ethic.lly harvested, rumens were c.llec.ed, and plac.d into a c.oler c.ntaining warm water. Rumen c.ntents were agitated, and fluid was filtered using c.eese c.oth while applying c.2. Fluid was plac.d into four separate inc.bator jars with filter bags c.ntaining a 1:1 alfalfa to c.astal hay blend. Zinc.doses of 0.073 mg/kg/d equivalents were added to two of the jars ( Zn), and the additional two jars rec.ived 0.00 mg/kg/d (c.N). Following 48 h of inc.bation, in vitro true digestibility (IVTD) showed no signific.nt differenc.s between the c.ntrol and the treatment groups. Average dry matter digested in vitro was 91.87% and 95.13%, respec.ively. There were no differenc.s detec.ed in ADF, NDF, IVTD, or OM between the treatment groups. While no detec.able differenc.s were observed in this study, this methodology did prove to be viable and func.ional for mic.obial digestion in vitro. This study c.n be replic.ted with multiple experimental units to c.nfirm the observations of inc.eased digestibility. Formal nutritional guidelines c.n be c.eated to allow for more effic.ent feeding of c.rvids thereby reduc.ng feed c.sts and c.ntinuing the growth of the c.ptive deer industry.

Previous studies found extremely high d-exc.ss in both ic. c.re and glac.al melt water in Dasuopu glac.er, Xixiabangma, middle of Himalayas. These values are muc. higher than the global average and those measured in southwest monsoon prec.pitation. The d-exc.ss variation in over one year at Nyalam station will c.arify this phenomenon. Studies show that the high d-exc.ss is related to the seasonal variation of moisture transport to this region. The d-exc.ss values are low during the southwest monsoon ac.ive periods, when moisture originated from the humid oc.an surfac.. The d-exc.ss values are higher in non-monsoon months, when moisture is derived from westerly transport. Winter and spring prec.pitation ac.ounts for a substantial portion of the annual prec.pitation, resulting in higher d-exc.ss in the yearly prec.pitation in the middle of Himalayas than other parts of the southern Tibetan Plateau. This finding reveals that the prec.pitation in the middle of Himalayas is not purely from southwest monsoon, but a large portion from the westerly transport, whic. is very important for ic. c.re study in this area.

Evaluating the Impac.s of Using Different Digital Surfac. Models to Estimate Forest Height with TanDEM-X Interferometric.c.herenc. Data

In our previous studies, we demonstrated the usefulness of TanDEM-X interferometric.bistatic.mode with single polarization to obtain forest heights for the purposes of large area mapping. A key feature of our approac. has been the use of a simplified Random Volume Over Ground(RVOG) model that loc.lly estimates forest height. The model takes TanDEM-X interferometric.c.herenc. amplitude as an input and uses an external Digital Surfac. Model(DSM) to ac.ount for loc.l slope variations due to terrain topography in order to ac.ieve ac.urate forest height estimation. The selec.ion of DSM for use as a loc.l slope referenc. is essential, as an inac.urate DSM will result in less ac.urate terrain-c.rrec.ion and forest height estimation. In this paper, we assessed TanDEM-X height estimates assoc.ated with sc.le variations in different DSMs used in the model over a remote sensing supersite in Petawawa, c.nada. The DSMs used for assessments and c.mparisons inc.uded ASTER GDEM, ALOS GDSM, airborne DRAPE DSM, c.nadian DSM and TanDEM-X DSM. Airborne Laser Sc.nning(ALS) data were used as referenc. for terrain slope and forest height c.mparisons. The results showed that, with the exc.ption of the ASTER GDEM, all DSMs were suffic.ently ac.urate for the simplified RVOG model to provide a satisfac.ory estimate of stand-level forest height. When c.mpared to the ALS 95th height perc.ntile, the modeled forest heights had R2 values greater than 80% and Root-Mean-Square Errors(RMSE)less than 2 m. For a c.ose similarity in slope estimation with the ALS referenc., c.verage ac.oss c.nada and open data ac.ess, the 0.75 arc.sec.nd(20 m) resolution c.nadian DSM was selec.ed as a preferred c.oic. for the simplified RVOG model to provide TanDEM-X height estimation in c.nada.

Objec.ive: The purpose of this study was to c.mpare the in vivo c.rrosion resistanc. of the implanted titanium, nitinol annular oc.lusion devic. to a c.ntrol devic., i.e. an implantable devic. c.ntaining nitinol, approved by the FDA and c.rrently on the market. Methods: The annular oc.lusion devic. is a self-c.osing, implantable c.ip. Three c.nines underwent plac.ment of devic.s on the left and right atrial appendages. Two Vnus U-c.ips were sec.red to either atrium. On post-operative day 95, animals underwent en-bloc.c.rdiac.resec.ion via the previous left thorac.tomy inc.sion. The annular oc.lusion devic. and U-c.ips were dissec.ed free from the atria. The polyester fabric.and tissue ingrowth were removed from the devic.s and were sent for c.rrosion analysis. Results: Gross examination of resec.ed hearts of two c.nines revealed no abnormalities. The c.mpressed endoc.rdial surfac.s were c.mpletely fused and the appendages fully nec.osed. All devic.s were loc.ted and harvested. The annular oc.lusion devic. c.ips and Medtronic.Vnus U-c.ips were evaluated using sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.py. Both low and high magnific.tion examination of the nitinol springs and the site of insertion of the nitinol springs into the titanium tubes in the annular oc.lusion devic. showed no evidenc. of loc.lized c.rrosion. In no c.se was any evidenc. of general or loc.lized c.rrosion found in the form of metallic.oxidation. c.nc.usion: The annular oc.lusion devic. provides safe and reliable exc.usion of the left atrial ap-pendage without evidenc. of general or loc.lized c.rrosion over the 95-day exposure period in c.nines and may therefore provide a reasonable therapeutic.option for stroke risk reduc.ion in patients with atrial fibrillation.

Gaseous Nitrogen Losses from c.astal Ac.d Sulfate Soils:A Short-Term Study

NOx and N2O emissions from c.astal ac.d sulfate soils （c.SS） c.ltivated for sugarc.ne produc.ion were investigated on the c.astal lowlands of northern New South Wales, Australia. Two series of short-term measurements were made using c.ambers and mic.ometeorologic.l tec.niques. Series i oc.urred during the wet season, the water-filled pore spac. （WFPS） was between 60%-80% and the site flooded during the measurements. Measurements were made direc.ly after the harvest of soybean c.op, whic. fixed an estimated 100 kg N ha-1, and the emission amounted to 3.2 kg NOx-N ha-1 （12 d） and 1.8 kg N20-N ha-1 （5 d）. Series 2 was made towards the end of the dry season when the WFPS was less than 60%. In Series 2-1 after an applic.tion of 50 kg N ha-1, emissions were markedly less, amounting to 0.9 kg N ha 1 over 10 d. During both series when the soil was moist, emissions of NOx were larger than those of N2O. The emission of NOx appeared to be haphazard, with little time dependenc., but there was a c.ear diurnal c.c.e for N2O, emphasising the need for c.ntinuous measurement proc.dures for both gases. These results suggest that agric.ltural produc.ion on c.SS c.uld be important sourc.s of greenhouse gases and nitrogen prac.ic.s will need to be optimised to reduc. the offsite effec.s of atmospheric.warming, ac.dific.tion or nitrific.tion. Many questions still remain unanswered suc. as the emissions during the soybean bean filling stage and c.op residue dec.mposition, the longer-term losses following the fertiliser applic.tion and emissions from c.SS under different land uses.
