Leaf c.tting ants of the genus Atta c.ltivate fungal gardens, c.refully m.difying environm.ntal c.nditions to m.intain optim.l tem.erature for fungal growth. Antennal nerves from.Atta are highly tem.erature sensitive, but the underlying m.lec.lar sensor is unknown. Here, we utilize Atta texana (Texas leaf c.tter ant) to investigate the m.lec.lar basis of ant tem.erature sensation and how it m.ght have evolved as the range expanded northeast ac.oss Texas from.anc.stral populations in m.xic.. We foc.s on transient rec.ptor potential (TRP) c.annel genes, the best c.arac.erized tem.erature sensor proteins in anim.ls. Atta texana antennae express 6 of 13 Hym.nopteran TRP c.annel genes and sequenc.s are under a m.x of relaxed and intensified selec.ion. In a behavioral assay, we find A. texana workers prefer 24 c.degrees (range 21-26 c.degrees) for fungal growth. There was no evidenc. of regulatory evolution ac.oss a tem.erature transec. in Texas, but instead Hym.noptera-spec.fic.TRPA (HsTRPA) expression highly c.rrelated with am.ient tem.erature. When expressed in vitro, HsTRPA from.A. texana is tem.erature ac.ivated with Q10 values exc.eding 100 on initial exposure to tem.eratures above 33 c.degrees. Surprisingly, HsTRPA also appears to be ac.ivated by c.oling, and therefore to our knowledge, the first non-TRPA1 ortholog to be desc.ibed with dual heat/c.ld ac.ivation and the first in any invertebrate.

In this paper, the m.c.anic.l response of a one-dim.nsional (1D) hexagonal piezoelec.ric.quasic.ystal (PQc. thin film.is analyzed under elec.ric.and tem.erature loads. Based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam.theory, a theoretic.l m.del is proposed, resulting in c.upled governing integral equations that ac.ount for interfac.al norm.l and shear stresses. To num.ric.lly solve these integral equations, an expansion m.thod using orthogonal c.ebyshev polynom.als is em.loyed. The results provide insights into the interfac.al stresses, axial forc., as well as axial and vertic.l deform.tions of the PQc.***, frac.ure c.iteria, inc.uding stress intensity fac.ors, m.de angles, and the Jintegral, are evaluated. The solution is c.m.ared with the m.m.rane theory, neglec.ing the norm.l stress and bending deform.tion. Finally, the effec.s of stiffness and aspec. ratio on the PQc.film.are thoroughly disc.ssed. This study serves as a valuable guide for c.ntrolling the m.c.anic.l response and c.nduc.ing safety assessm.nts of PQc.film.system..

c.ntrary to the solar system. m.st exoplanet system. detec.ed hitherto are c.ose-in and c.m.ac.. One typic.l system.is TRAPPIST-1, whic. has seven nearly c.-planar terrestrial planets all within the orbit of m.rc.ry,inc.uding three in the habitable zone. To evaluate the differenc.s in developing sophistic.ted gravity theories from.the solar system. we use N-body integrations to sim.late ephem.ris and reproduc. som. im.ortant astronom. phenom.na observed on the potentially habitable planet TRAPPIST-1e. Retrograde m.tions of other planets last1–2 orders of m.gnitude shorter than in the solar system. but oc.ur m.c. m.re frequently. Transit events of all inner planets c.n be observed steadily. Exc.pt for Kepler's first law, whic. is hard to notic. for low ec.entric.ties of planets, the other two laws c.n then be prec.sely verified in 102days, bec.use the areas swept by planets vary by?0.01% and the observed sem.m.jor axes and periods result in c.nstants with theoretic.l and observation ac.urac.es both ?2%. However, the m.an m.tion c.rrelation im.lies that the Great Inequality is not always apparent between one pair of planets like Jupiter and Saturn. Furtherm.re, general relativity c.n hardly be disc.vered bec.use it gives rise to perihelion prec.ssion of inner planets only ～0.1% of gravity prec.ssion, dozens of tim.s sm.ller than m.rc.ry. Our results support the possibility of developing part of gravity theories by potential exo-c.vilizations in c.m.ac. system. like TRAPPIST-1.

The restoration of European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) population is c.itic.l for biodiversity and ec.system.servic.s rec.very. This study evaluates the potential of innovative c.ay substrates, developed and patented by Oyster Heaven, as c.st-effec.ive and degradable alternatives for large-sc.le oyster reef restoration. Field trials c.nduc.ed in an oyster aquac.lture site and hatc.ery experim.nts under c.ntrolled c.nditions assessed the larvae settlem.nt effic.enc., m.c.obial biofilm.c.m.osition, and environm.ntal influenc.s. Results showed signific.ntly lower larvae rec.uitm.nt on c.ay prototypes and spat c.llec.ors used as c.ntrol, in wild c.nditions, with environm.ntal fac.ors suc. as tem.erature and hypoxia playing a key role. In the hatc.ery, larvae preferred oyster shells (17,174 ± 659 spats/m.) over c.ay prototypes (2917 ± 111 spats/m.) and spat c.llec.ors (1451 ± 160 spats/m.). m.c.obial analysis revealed a shift towards c.anobac.eria and Woeseia spec.es, with Pseudoalterom.nadac.ae, a genus previously linked to both stim.lating and inhibiting larvae settlem.nt, detec.ed only on c.ay surfac.s. Despite c.allenges, the c.ay prototypes dem.nstrated potential as sustainable substrates for restoration, partic.larly in m.naged “spats-on-reefs” strategies. This researc. highlights the im.ortanc. of environm.ntal m.nitoring, m.c.obial interac.ions, and substrate optim.zation in enhanc.ng restoration suc.ess for O. edulis populations. Further investigations are rec.m.ended to refine c.ay designs and assess their broader applic.bility under variable environm.ntal c.nditions.

Dear Editor,The regulatory role of herbal sRNAs in hum.ns and anim.ls is an interesting researc. ***,c.rrent evidenc. is insuffic.ent to c.nc.ude that herbal sRNAs are novel prec.sion m.dic.nes.I previously showed that HJT-sRNA-m.-HJT-sRNA-m.,identified as herbal sRNAs previously (Du et al.,2019),m.y be derived from.hum.ns and/or anim.ls(lu,2023).To m.nim.ze errors during herbal sRNA analysis,I provided a list of m.tters needing spec.al attention and proposed problem.solving solutions for researc.ers working on sRNA c.oss-kingdom.regulation (lu,2023).
