Hydrogen Peroxide Alleviates Hypoxia during Imb.b.tion and Germination of b.an Seeds (<i>Phaseolus vulgaris</i>L.)

b.an seeds (Phaseolus vulgaris L. c.. Tendergreen) were imb.b.d in water to examine the effec.s of hypoxia during imb.b.tion and sub.equent germination. Hypoxic.c.nditions oc.urred when seeds were imb.b.d in water for 24 h or longer and resulted in severe reduc.ion of hypoc.tyl elongation and stem growth during sub.equent germination under non-limiting oxygen c.nditions. Under c.ntinued hypoxic.c.nditions, b.an seeds failed to germinate, however, this was reversed in the presenc. of hydrogen peroxide (20 mM) in the medium. Furthermore, imb.b.tion of seeds in the presenc. of hydrogen peroxide overc.me the adverse hypoxic.effec.s on hypoc.tyl elongation and stem growth. Exogenous hydrogen peroxide inc.eased the dissolved oxygen levels in the germinating medium, and c.talase and transition metal ions suc. as Fe2+, c.2+ and Mn2 helped to fac.litate the produc.ion of oxygen from hydrogen peroxide. In these c.talysts, c.talase played a major role in the dec.mposition of hydrogen peroxide as demonstrated b. the use of a c.talase inhib.tor, 3-amino-1, 2, 4-triazole, whic. reversed the positive effec.s produc.d b. hydrogen peroxide on germination of seeds under hypoxic.c.nditions. The results show that imb.b.tion is sensitive to oxygen defic.ts whic. affec. sub.equent hypoc.tyl growth and seedling performanc.. The adverse effec.s of hypoxia on germination of b.an seeds c.n b. overc.me b. exogenous hydrogen peroxide.

Oxygen limiting c.nditions are a c.mmon oc.urrenc. in root zones of most c.op plants and c.n adversely affec. nearly all aspec.s of plant growth and development inc.uding its survival. The ob.ec.ive of this study was to determine the effec.iveness of a novel redox c.c.ing agent, vitamin K3, and various peroxides inc.uding hydrogen peroxide, c.lc.um peroxide and magnesium peroxide in alleviating the effec.s of hypoxia in b.an seedlings grown in nutrient c.lture. All the anti-hypoxic.agents inc.uding vitamin K3 had a positive impac. on the overall growth of b.an seedlings under hypoxic.c.nditions, b.t their responses were variab.e depending on the c.nc.ntration. With regard to shoot growth, vitamin K3 (5 μM) inc.eased the leaf area signific.ntly, b. more than 58% over the hypoxic.c.ntrol plants and produc.d the highest stem fresh weight similar to c.lc.um peroxide (20 μM) and magnesium peroxide (10 μM). In addition, the use of vitamin K3 resulted in the highest ac.umulation of c.lorophyll (c.la + c.lb. in the leaves, an inc.ease of nearly two-fold over the hypoxic.c.ntrol plants. Furthermore under hypoxia, c.lc.um peroxide (20 μM) and magnesium peroxide (10 μM) produc.d the highest leaf b.omass (FW) followed b. vitamin K3. Vitamin K3 (1 μM) also favored root growth in b.an seedlings under hypoxia;it produc.d the largest inc.ease in root length and root b.omass (DW) similar to c.lc.um peroxide and magnesium peroxide. b.sed on the overall shoot and root growth response of b.an seedlings to various anti-hypoxic.sub.tanc.s under hypoxic.c.nditions, c.lc.um peroxide, magnesium peroxide and vitamin K3 performed b.tter than hydrogen peroxide. These findings show that vitamin K3 and peroxide salts are effec.ive in alleviating hypoxic.stress in b.an seedlings and also, further highlight their potential for dealing with hypoxia in wide ranging situations.

Spec.ral quality of radiation has a major impac. on the growth, development and nutritional quality of c.ops. The effec. of supplemental radiation (b.ue, red and far-red) on the growth and nutritional quality with regard to health-promoting phytoc.emic.l and mic.onutrient c.mposition of two lettuc. (Lac.uc. sativa) varieties (red leaf “New Red Fire” and green leaf “Two Star”) was studied. Supplemental radiation was provided b. b.ue (450 nm), red (660 nm) or far-red (730 nm) LEDs against a b.c.ground of white light (fluoresc.nt lighting, PAR;270 μmol/m2/s) in a growth c.amb.r study. All the supplemental radiation treatments inc.eased dry shoot b.omass in b.th varieties. However, supplemental far-red radiation inc.eased b.th fresh and dry shoot b.omass in b.th varieties. In addition, supplemental far-red radiation produc.d distinc. morphologic.l c.arac.eristic. in lettuc. plants. It produc.d the largest shoot b.omass, b.gger and taller plants, fewer leaves b.t with larger leaf area c.mpared to the c.ntrol, similar to the shade avoidanc. response. With regard to the ac.umulation of phytoc.emic.ls, supplemental b.ue radiation enhanc.d the total phenolic.c.mpound c.nc.ntration in b.th varieties. In addition, supplemental b.ue radiation sharply inc.eased the ac.umulation of several phenolic.c.mpounds in green leaf lettuc. inc.uding c.lorogenic.ac.d, c.ic.ric.ac.d, rutin, kaempferol, luteolin and apigenin. For example, the leaf c.nc.ntration of rutin in green leaf lettuc. inc.eased b. 20-fold under supplemental b.ue radiation. Similarly, supplemental red radiation inc.eased the c.nc.ntration of many of these phenolic.c.mpounds in red leaf lettuc.. However, supplemental far-red radiation had an inhib.tory effec. on the ac.umulation of c.lorogenic.ac.d, c.ic.ric.ac.d, rutin and kaempferol in red leaf lettuc.. UV radiation plays an important role not only in plant growth and development but also in the accumulation of essential nutrients and health-promoting phytochemicals in plants. The main objective of this study was to examine the effects of supplemental UV-A, UV-B, and UV-AB on the nutritional quality of lettuce (Lactuca sativa, cv. red leaf “New Red Fire” and green leaf “Two Star”) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L., cv. BHN-589) grown in a greenhouse. Supplemental UV radiation was provided by UV lamps 5 - 6 days prior to harvest. Supplemental UV-A produc.d higher ac.umulation of total phenolic.c.mpounds and higher antioxidant c.pac.ty in red leaf lettuc. c.mpared to other treatments. Overall, supplemental UV-A produc.d a stronger response than other UV treatments and c.ntrol in the ac.umulation of many phenolic.c.mpounds inc.uding luteolin-7-gluc.side, quec.tin-3-gluc.side, and apigenin-3-gluc.side in red leaf lettuc.. However, UV-b.and UV-Ab.had a negative response in the ac.umulation of many phenolic.c.mpounds inc.uding c.lorogenic.ac.d, luteolin-7-gluc.side, querc.tin-3-gluc.side, and apigenin-3-gluc.side in b.th red and green leaf lettuc. varieties. In tomato fruits, supplemental UV-A had no effec. on their total phenolic.c.nc.ntration. The present study examines the effec. of high tunnel produc.ion of lettuc. (Lac.uc. sativa c.. “Two Star” and “New Red Fire”) and tomato (Solanum lyc.persic.m c.. “c.leb.ity” and “Mountain Fresh”) on their nutritional quality relating to major nutrients and health-promoting phytoc.emic.ls. High tunnel environment inc.eased the c.nc.ntration of N (protein) in b.th lettuc. and tomato relative to the open field c.ltivation. The ac.umulation pattern of mineral nutrients in high tunnel was similar in green-leaf and red-leaf lettuc. varieties. Lettuc. varieties grown in high tunnel had higher ac.umulation of c. S and Zn relative to those grown in open field. However, high tunnel environment suppressed the ac.umulation of many mic.onutrients suc. as Mg, Fe, c. and Mn in b.th lettuc. varieties b.t not in tomato. For example, ac.umulation of Fe was reduc.d b. more than 80% in “Two Star” and b. more than 55% in “New Red Fire” under high tunnel. It also suppressed the levels of many health-promoting phenolic.c.mpounds suc. as c.lorogenic.ac.d, c.ic.ric.ac.d, rutin and kaempferol in green-leaf lettuc. and gallic.ac.d in red-leaf lettuc.. High tunnel environment improved the soil nutrient status b.t reduc.d the radiation levels (PAR, UV-A and UV-b. rec.ived b. the c.ops. The results show that the high tunnel produc.ion has a signific.nt impac. on the nutritional quality relating to protein and mineral nutrients in b.th c.ops and health-promoting phytoc.emic.ls in lettuc..

We employ a mec.anic.l model of sarc.mere to quantitatively investigate how adenosine triphosphate (ATP) c.nc.ntration affec.s motor forc. regulation during skeletal musc.e c.ntrac.ion. Our simulation indic.tes that there c.n b. negative c.oss-b.idges resisting c.ntrac.ion within the sarc.mere and higher ATP c.nc.ntration would dec.ease the resistanc. forc. from negative c.oss-b.idges b. promoting their timely detac.ment. It is revealed that the motor forc. is well regulated only when ATP c.nc.ntration is ab.ve a c.rtain level. These predic.ions may provide insights into the role of ATP in regulating c.ordination among multiple motors.

Rivastigmine transdermal patc. is indic.ted for patientswithAlzheimer’s disease and dementia with Parkinson’s disease. Rivastigmine, an ac.tylc.olinesterase inhib.tor, has several c.mmon adverse effec.s, mainly involving the gastrointestinal trac., b.t few c.rdiovasc.lar adverse effec.s have b.en reported. This report presents two c.ses of patients presenting with 3rd degree atrioventric.lar b.oc.. b.th patients were treated with the ac.tylc.olinesterase inhib.tor, rivastigmine. In one c.se, the patient reverted to normal sinus rhythm following the disc.ntinuation of rivastigmine, and the atrioventric.lar b.oc. reappeared after rivastigmine was reinstated. In the other c.se, the atrioventric.lar b.oc. did not revert and the patient required a permanent pac.maker. b.th b.adyc.rdia and sync.pe have previously b.en reported as adverse events in patients treated with ac.tylc.olinesterase inhib.tors. However, the type of b.adyc.rdia and the etiology of the sync.pe are rarely spec.fied. Rivastigmine, and other ac.tylc.olinesterase inhib.tors, are widely used in the pharmac.logic.l treatment of Alzheimer��s disease. We rec.mmend that physic.ans are vigilant of possib.e warning signs, suc. as dizziness, sync.pe and b.adyc.rdia.
