c.rrent Soil Nutrient Status of Intensively Managed Greenhouses

Nine distric.s c.vering the main greenhouse vegetable areas in Tianjin Munic.pality of the North c.ina Plain were selec.ed for the soil investigation in 2010 to survey the c.rrent soil nutrient status (soil available N, P and K), ac.dific.tion and salinization due to exc.ssive input of fertilizers in greenhouses in Tianjin. The study showed that, in partic.lar, soil available P c.ntent inc.eased with the age of greenhouses. In c.ntrast, our results did not reveal higher K ac.umulation and lowered pH in the greenhouse soils c.mpared with c.ltivation in open fields. Over-fertilization, c.using high NO 3 ac.umulation, most likely resulted in salinity problems in the greenhouses. Ninety perc.nt of the investigated greenhouse soils had elec.ric.l c.nduc.ivity values of saturated paste extrac.s of 2-10 d S m-1 , whic. might affec. the yields of vegetable c.ops like green bean, pepper, c.bbage, c.rrot, eggplant, lettuc., spinac., c.lery, c.c.mber and tomato. The findings of our survey of the c.rrent fertility and salinity problems in greenhouse soils suggest that there is an urgent need to improve the farmers' prac.ic.s and strategies in fertilization management in greenhouses of c.ina. Bec.use educ.tion and the agric.ltural tec.nic.l extension servic.s may play a more important role in avoiding overuse of fertilizers, we suggest that c.rrent nutrient management prac.ic.s should be improved in the near future through training of loc.l farmers in farmers' sc.ools and through strengthening the agric.ltural extension servic.s with prac.ic.l tec.niques.
