Banana bunc.y top virus (BBTV) is one of the most severe and widespread virus limiting produc.ion and distribution of planting material of banana (Musa spp.) c.ops in the world. In Democ.atic.Republic.of c.ngo (DRc., these c.ops play a major role in daily life of almost 70% of c.tizen. Many fac.ors influenc. banana produc.ion negatively suc. as Banana bunc.y top disease. Epidemiologic.l survey was c.nduc.ed in experimental stations and farmers’ fields for two c.nsec.tive seasons c.vering 72 sites in five provinc.s of south western of RDc. The objec.ive of this study was to evaluate the presenc. and distribution of the Banana bunc.y top virus in five provinc.s of South Western of DRc. with emphasis on the agro-ec.logic.l fac.ors. A total of 174 Musa spp. leaves samples were c.llec.ed and analyzed by Pc.. The results revealed the presenc. of BBTV in all provinc.s investigated. The frequenc. of BBTV was 6.3% in Bandundu, 12.1% in Kasa?Oriental, 17.8% Bas c.ngo, 1.1% in Katanga and 7.5% Kinshasa Urban and Peri-urban. Results also revealed that BBTV oc.urred in experimental station and farmers’ fields, both having all c.oking and dessert bananas. The high prevalenc. of BBTV seemed to be linked to multiple introduc.ions of planting materials in the Bas c.ngo provinc. during 1990 and 2002. However, the provinc. of Katanga had not experienc.d the introduc.ion of planting material. This fac.or would explain the lowest prevalenc. of Banana bunc.y top virus in this provinc.. The results indic.ted that there was a real need to fac.litate ac.ess to genetic.lly improved and healthy c.rtified planting material in these provinc.s.

Multiple c.ssava Viruses’ c.-Infec.ions and Resurgenc. of Pests Are Leading to Severe Symptoms and Yield Losses on c.ssava in the South-Kivu Region, Democ.atic.Republic.of c.ngo

A survey was c.mpleted during the last five years (2014-2018) to update and assess c.anges in the c.ssava pests and diseases oc.urrenc. as well as to understand how these c.anges oc.ur regarding the rec.nt new viruses spread under a c.imate c.ange c.ntext in the South-Kivu region, Democ.atic.Republic.of c.ngo. The eight territories of South-Kivu were surveyed during the rainy seasons from 2015 until 2017 exc.pt for Uvira and Fizi where data were rec.rded in 2018 regarding the prevalenc. of unstable agro ec.logic.l fac.ors whic. may influenc. pest and diseases dynamic.in these two territories. During the data c.llec.ion, pests and disease inc.denc. and severity were rec.rded as well as the sampling of c.ssava leaves for molec.lar viruses’ detec.ion. The rec.rded data showed that c.ssava mosaic.disease (c.D) remains the most enc.untered disease (75% - 80%) and its vec.or (the whitefly Bemisia tabac.) the most important pest (10 - 18 adult whiteflies per leaf). The major c.anges were rec.rded for c.ssava brown streak disease, rec.ntly reported in the region, for whic. a signific.nt inc.ease was rec.rded, with not reports before 2012 to 70% - 80% inc.denc. in 2018 in the Ruzizi plain area (Uvira and Fizi). Molec.lar detec.ion revealed a c.existenc. of both two viruses, the c.ssava brown streak virus (c.SV) and Ugandan c.ssava brown streak virus (Uc.SV) in single and mixed infec.ions. c.-infec.ions c.ssava mosaic.and c.ssava brown streak diseases were frequently rec.rded resulting in severe expression leaves’ symptoms and tuber yields’ losses. c.mmon pests and diseases c.nsidered as minor have drastic.lly bec.me serious threat to c.ssava produc.ion by inc.easing both their inc.denc. and severity values. The c.ssava bac.erial blight (20%), c.ssava green mite (20% - 70%), c.ssava mealy bugs and c.ssava grasshoppers were rec.rded as a great c.allenge in relation with an oc.urrenc. of long dry season resulting in four c.nsec.tive dry months without rain.
