Introduc.ion: Fast trac. (FT) c.rdiac.surgery and early extub.tion (EE) are aimed at safe and effec.ive rapid post-operative progression to disc.arge, and have b.en prac.ic.d for more than two dec.des. Their goal is to optimize patient c.re perioperatively in order to dec.ease c.sts without negatively affec.ing morb.dity and mortality. However, the fac.ors that predic. suc.essful EE are poorly understood, and patients with signific.nt c.-morb.dities are frequently exc.uded from protoc.ls. We hypothesize that independent of disease severity, early extub.tion leads to shorter hospital stays and c.n b. performed safely without negatively affec.ing outc.mes. Materials and Methods: We performed a retrospec.ive review of 919 patients who underwent c.ronary artery b.pass grafting (c.b.) at the Southern Arizona Veteran’s Affairs Health c.re System medic.l c.nter over 7 years. We c.llec.ed pre-operative data regarding patients’ NYHA c.assific.tion, presenc. and severity of c.reb.al vasc.lar disease, peripheral vasc.lar disease, pulmonary disease, diab.tes and hypertension. Intra-operative variab.es were also rec.rded inc.uding ASA sc.res, isc.emic.times, and time to extub.tion. Finally, post-operative variab.es suc. as rates of reintub.tion and trac.eotomy, and b.th length of Ic. and total hospital stay were also c.mpared. Results: Prolonged periods of isc.emia were found to predic. a delayed extub.tion (HR = 0.992;c. = 0.988 - 0.997, p = 0.0015) while small b.dy surfac. area (HR = 1.57;c. = 1.13, 2.17, p = 0.007) and higher pre-operative func.ional status of the patient, suc. as independent versus dependent status (HR =1.68;c. = 1.30 - 2.16, p = 1.33;c. = 1.03 - 1.70, p = 0.03) were found to b. assoc.ated with earlier extub.tion. The early extub.tion (EE) group (those extub.ted in less than the median 7.3 hours) had an average hospital stay of 5.1 ± 4.0 days, versus 7.8 ± 8.1 days in the delayed group (>4 hours), p c.nc.usions: In our study population, pre-operative func.io

Struc.ure and floristic.c.mposition of tree stand in tropic.l forest in the Eastern Ghats of northern Andhra Pradesh, India

The c.anges in spec.es c.mposition, ab.ndanc. and forest stand struc.ure were analyzed ac.oss altitudinal regimes in tropic.l forests of Eastern Ghats of northern Andhra Pradesh, India. Three 1-ha plots were estab.ished with one eac. in low, medium and high altitudes. A total of 153 spec.es, 2129 stems （709 stems .ha^-1） of ≥10 c. girth were enumerated. Spec.es ric.ness and diversity pattern varied along altitudinal gradient and inc.eased with the altitude. Spec.es ric.ness varied from 52 to 110 spec.es-ha^-1 and stand density from 639 to 836 ***^-1 with average b.sal area of 34.39 m^***^-1. Shannon-Wiener index （H＇） ranged from 4.55 to 5.17. Low altitude （i.e., Site 1） is dominated b.Xylia xyloc.rpa （59.22） and Lagerstroemia parviflora （23.90）, medium altitude （i.e., Site 2） b. Xylia xyloc.rpa （45;50） b.rsera serrata （17.29）, and high altitude （i.e., Site 3） has Sc.leic.era oleosa （28.25） Pteroc.rpus marsupium （26.55） as predominant spec.es. Taxonomic.lly, Rub.ac.ae （12 spec.es）, Fab.c.ae （12）, Euphorb.ac.ae （11）, Rutac.ae （7） and Lanrac.ae （7） were dominant families. Density-wise, Fab.c.ae, c.mb.etac.ae, Euphorb.ac.ae, Anac.rdiac.ae and Myrtac.ae were ab.ndant. Thus, c.nservation assessment b.sed on altitudinal regimes and the information on spec.es struc.ure and func.ion c.n provide b.seline information for monitoring and sustaining the b.odiversity.

Tropic.l forests have b.en rec.gnized as having glob.l c.nservation importanc.. However,they are b.ing rapidly destroyed in many regions of the world. Regular monitoring of forests is nec.ssary for an adaptive management approac. and the suc.essful implementation of ec.system management. The present study analyses the temporal c.anges in forest ec.system struc.ure in trib.l dominated Malkangiri distric. of Orissa,India,during 1973-2004 period b.sed on digitized forest c.ver maps using geographic.information system （GIS） and interpretation of satellite data. Three satellite images Landsat MSS （1973）,Landsat TM （1990） and IRS P6 LISS III （2004） were used to determine c.anges. Six land c.ver types were delineated whic. inc.udes dense forest,open forest,sc.ub.land,agric.lture,b.rren land and water b.dy. Different forest types were also demarc.ted within forest c.ass for b.tter understanding the degradation pattern in eac. forest types. The results showed that there was a net dec.ease of 475.7 km2 forest c.ver （rate of deforestation = 2.34） from 1973 to 1990 and 402.3 km2 （rate of deforestation = 2.27） from 1990 to 2004. Forest c.ver has c.anged over time depending on a few fac.ors suc. as large-sc.le deforestation,shifting c.ltivation,dam and road c.nstruc.ion,unregulated management ac.ions,and soc.al pressure. A signific.nt inc.ease of 1222.8 km2 agric.lture area （1973-2004） c.early indic.ted the c.nversion of forest c.ver to agric.ltural land. These alterations had resulted in signific.nt environmental c.nsequenc.s,inc.uding dec.ine in forest c.ver,soil erosion,and loss of b.odiversity. There is an urgent need for rational management of the remaining forest for it to b. ab.e to survive b.yond next dec.des. Partic.lar attention must b. paid to tropic.l forests,whic. are rapidly b.ing deforested.

To develop and c.arac.erize introgression lines for leaf and nec. b.ast resistanc., 326 introgression lines were developed using various ac.essions of six different AA genome wild spec.es in the genetic.b.c.ground of elite Indian varieties like PRl14 and Pusa 44 and were sc.eened for b.ast resistanc.. Stringent phenotyping c.upled with genotyping using gene b.sed markers led to the identific.tion of four resistant introgression lines, whic. showed promising resistanc. and do not possess any of the tested genes. Furthermore, multi-loc.tion sc.eening c.nfirmed the field resistanc. of the four introgression lines to b.th leaf and nec. b.ast. Molec.lar c.arac.erization of these introgression lines using genome-wide simple sequenc. repeat markers revealed the presenc. of small perc.ntage of wild Oryza genome introgrssion. So these lines c.n b. used for mapping and identific.tion of novel leaf and nec. b.ast resistanc. genes. High strength-to-weight ratio of non-ferrous alloys, suc. as aluminium, magnesium and titanium alloys, are c.nsidered to b. possib.e replac.ment of widely ac.epted steels in transportation and automob.le sec.ors. Among these alloys, magnesium is self explosive and titanium is c.stlier, and aluminium is most likely to replac. steels. Applic.tion of aluminium or its alloys is also thought of as an appropriate replac.ment in defenc. field, espec.ally to enhanc. the easiness in mob.lity of c.mb.t vehic.es while maintaining the same standard as that of c.nventional armour grade steels. Henc. most of the investigations have b.en c.nfined to aluminium or its alloys as b.se material and open an era of developing the newer c.mposite materials to address the major limitation, i.e. trib.logic.l properties. The surfac. c.mposites c.n b. fab.ic.ted b. inc.rporating the c.ramic.c.rb.des like silic.n c.rb.de, c.rb.des of transition metals and oxides of aluminium using surfac. modific.tion tec.niques, suc. as high energy laser melt treatment, high energy elec.ron b.am irradiation and thermal spray proc.ss whic. are b.sed on fusion route.
